connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 I guess the Dodgers didn’t feel like chalking up their playoff exit to bad luck.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Rays doing Rays things They were never going to pay Glasgow his 25M for 2024, somebody else was going to And Margo is getting 10M So 35M salary gone for league minimum guys sounds about right Great farm and development, but disgusting organization overall. They could be so much better if they just spent a bit more
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Author Posted December 13, 2023 So Dodgers payroll is going to be ridiculous again Yeah watch it end up being 350 million in real dollars but like 210 for luxury tax purposes. Gotta hand it to them for taking advantage

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 I guess the Dodgers didn’t feel like chalking up their playoff exit to bad luck. That has nothing to do with trying to make your team better.

He should be non-tendered at that price.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 f***ing Rays keep doing Rays things. Also how the hell do the Dodgers keep a top farm system while trading away so much. They run the system that Shatkins pretend to lol.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 I don't think anyone should pay Margot $10M a year. He should be non-tendered at that price. It’s not through Arbitration. He signed a 2 year deal I believe. Also includes a 2Mil buyout next offseason.

It was reported that Yamamoto wants to play with other Japanese players, and the Dodgers already have the best Japanese player to ever suit up in MLB on top of plenty of available payroll space to match all of the other offers that come in.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Crazy how we're going from an offseason where we could have gotten Ohtani/Yamamoto to us getting Bellinger is the most impactful move potentially lol.

Neither of Ohtani or Yamamoto were realistic targets but Bellinger is a guy who I think the team has a much better chance to sign. Whether or not that's ultimately a good thing is certainly up for debate.

I said this to a friend but the letdown from not signing Ohtani is just massive, mostly because there is nobody in free agency and the smart thing to do is just not spend all the money. Worst case scenario is probably the team overpaying some free agents right now because they have anxiety to make a big move.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Imagine giving a 5 foot 10 NPB pitcher 300 million lol
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Yusei Kikuchi age 26 NPB 187 innings, 10.4 k9, 2.3 bb9, 1.97 ERA Yamamoto the next Kikuchi confirmed No wait, the next Dice K.

They have arguably a bottom 5 farm right now, not exactly an amazing core of young guys signed to team friendly deals. Vlad/BO either need new deals or to be traded. I think it's either they decide to add 2-3 big pieces this year and go for it and add like 50-60m to payroll or just rebuild the farm and then at the deadline dump Vlad and maybe BO. Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Maybe we could do a 2013-Marlins style trade where we give up Manoah and a bunch of 40/45 prospects for Robert, Benitendi, Moncada and Eloy Jimenez.

Yeah that's fine in theory But the big pieces on free agency are landmines

Robert, Moncada, and Jimenez would be intriguing. Benintendi and his contract are horrendous so I'd avoid that if possible. Adding him to the deal in theory should reduce the prospect cost tremendously but 4 more expensive years of Benintendi's noodle bat and bad defense won't help the team short or long term.

Yeah he's included all so we wouldn't have to give up as much prospect capital. We could just use him as a 4th OF. Given their remaining contracts, Moncada has negative value and Eloy has very little value but we could start them at 3B and DH. Robert has a shitload of value.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Robert CF Bo SS Vlad 1B Bellinger RF Eloy DH Springer LF Moncada 3B Kirk / Jansen C Biggio 2B I'd give the Chisox Tiedemann, Varsho, ++ to see this lineup in action

It's actually kind of startling how badly Benintendi's defensive metrics declined in one season. The sprint speed numbers dropped modestly but nothing that would begin to explain a 10 run drop in OAA. Benintendi apparently played through various injuries in 2023 but even so I'd want nothing to do with his contract.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 You guys, Benitendi sucks ass I get it. But if you want Robert without taking on a bad contract in return you'd basically have to let the White Sox hand select 5 prospects off our roster and even then we might get outbid by someone else or the ChiSox simply pass and hang on to him. If you take on Benitendi and Moncada, guys with negative value, maybe you get Robert without even having to give up Tiedeman. If we are unable to flex our financial muscles this offseason in FA, then perhaps we can do so in FA by taking on some bad deals via trade.

I think it would take a lot more to get all those guys from the Sox though. Probably something like Manoah + Kirk + Tiedemann + Orelvis
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Trade Kirk and make Varsho a C/OF again
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 I'm beginning to think the best option is to roll with whoever gets hot between Barger and Orelvis Martinez for 3rd base duties. One of them probably takes over by 2025 anyway. Aside from Chapman, I'm not convinced anyone available would be an upgrade over them. Sign one of Soler, Hoskins, or JD for DH and cross your fingers with a Bellinger contract (or Gurriel if Bellinger bidding goes nuts). Certainly not ideal, but it should be an improved offense over last year. Maybe trade Espinal for a reliever and make Clement the super bench guy since he can sort of play most positions.
