It's likely that Boras and/or Harper realize they should have included an opt out in there, so extending the current deal is their only option. I don't blame them, if any GM would do it, it's probably Dombrowski, so shoot your shot.

I remember him specifically saying he DIDN'T want an opt out when he signed with the Phils

But I suppose that was more about wanting to spend the rest of his career in once place more than not wanting flexibility to re-finance the thing

Even without re-doing it he's going to make nearly 400M in total career earnings by the time this contract is over

Not enough?? Or he just wants to force the team to keep playing him as a 600 OPS DH when he's 42?

Which contract will look the worst in its final year (player age that year noted):

Mookie Betts @ 39

Carlos Correa @ 40

Trea Turner @ 40

Xander Bogaerts @ 40

Mike Trout @ 38

Ohtani @ ??? 41

Don't forgot Ohtani @ 40 as well.

LOL was just coming to add it

Now I instantly go from convincing myself that Ohtani was worth it at any cost if we managed to snag him and pivot to railing on about what a terrible long term signing it likely would have been. :D

Watching my son practicing today at Webber Baseball Academy beside Chris Reitsma and Mike Soroka, who were doing loss toss, and chatting away with the young players never gets old. My son doesn't know how lucky he is to have that kind of experience in Calgary on a December day.

Soroka looks great...says he is healthy anyway.

Yeah, he said he wanted to ensure he would stay in one place, and be an advocate on the team to try and recruit other players to sign there.

Whomever locked the Ohtani thread when I was about to destroy the fake accountant, you’re a dick.
I can still reply

Apparently Ohtani's camp had lowkey given the Dodgers the right to match the highest offer from any other team. No other team had a chance from the start. It was always going to be the Dodgers.

Assuming this is true, actually they did have a chance, just had to exceed what the Dodgers were willing to pay

Personally I don't believe there was a number another team could have offered that the Dodgers wouldn't have been willing to pay.

There is no chance the Jays offered anything close to 700M. Dodgers had to come over the top to severely overpay so I wouldn't say anything like they had the "inside track."

That would only make sense if they got him for the same price or cheaper than the offers out there. Dodgers got him simply because they gave him the best contract. Just my 2 cents.

Both you and Jim are right I think. With the exchange rate delta, LAD geographic proximity to Japan, winning record, elite farm, we would have had to massively overpay. Ownership wanted him and made a big overture, but even for Rogers there are financial viability limits. Technically we had a chance, but kind of like a Dumb and Dumber chance. We ended being a straw man to help up the LAD offer. I am still glad we took a shot.

Yankees and Dodgers working on a trade...

I 90% guarantee you that it is an agreed upon deal from the Soto trade that was waiting for the 40 man crunch that came with Ohtani...

I'm glad we took a shot too. If anything, it shows that there is a commitment to spending and Rogers sees the benefit of eyes on the team. I really, really wanted Ohtani, but $700m? That has serious potential to be an enormous albatross contract in three or four years.

Knowing what we now know, yeah we kind of didn't have a chance. Heading into this everyone thought he would get 500-600M. Jays probably had a very competitive offer within the top end of that range. Maybe even a bit higher.

We didn't know what the Dodgers would do. Maybe 615 mil would scare them off? It was certainly feasible and then when reporters started reporting that we actually did it seemed like it was a real possibility.

But the Dodgers blew it out of the water with a 700M bid. But we didn't know they were going to do that until the very end.

The Yankees are acquiring left-handed reliever Victor Gonzalez and minor league infield prospect Jorbit Vivas from the Dodgers in exchange for minor league infielder Trey Sweeney, reports Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees were acquiring a pair of 40-man players from the Dodgers in exchange for a prospect not on New York’s 40-man.

Sweeney was in their top 10 prospects. Really surprising trade.

Enjoy LA or New York Sasaki

Yup. He'll be a Yankee or join Ohtani with the Dodgers. A bunch of insufferable dickbags in the media will gush about how great it is for baseball
