Yeah this move improves the team defensively but adding another bat that can hit towards the top/middle of the order is necessary. Either Conforto or Brantley next would be ideal. Then trade Jansen for the best SP you can get.

keep in mind, if we do trade Jansen then we may need to pick up another bat for designated hitting-of or something like that. I'd think Brantley or Conforto would be good choices.

All of you people complaining are going to change your tune pretty quick when that beautiful steely-gazed lion runs 60 feet to jump in front of a camped Gurriel on routine fly and guns down a runner tagging from 3B.

Seems about right in this inflated FA market. He projects for 1.2 wins and a win is probably $10M this free agency

It’s just hard to wrap your head around a 24M extension for Kevin Pillar

I was hoping there would be a corner outfielder to pair with him if this move was made. Conforto or Brantley would be nice. Not sure that happens now but we’ll see

Salaries are nuts right now. Not a fan but it is what it is

If we consider this the bookend of the Teo trade...

Teoscar Hernandez (15M) gone

Kiermeier (12M) + Possible back end pen for 1.5M and a prospect in.

Defense = better, pen = better, offense=worse.

Are the Jays overall better, worse... or is this a push?

I’m guessing KK will be the CF starter but get hurt at least once and end up getting a 4th OFers helping of playing time each season.

He just fits the roster so well right now. Toronto almost had to make this marriage happen.

Fingers crossed for health and a big enough chip on his shoulder to feel like he has something left to prove in his career

Based on Atkins’ comments it sounds like they wanted two left handed OF bats. So I could see Conforto, Gallo or Brantley signing as well. So KK can sit against his fair share of lefties and then if he gets hurt we’ll have someone to soak up extra ABs.

I'm not the biggest fan of adding Kiermaier, but the Jays really needed an OF that is controllable after 2023. Conforto is signing a one year deal, Bellinger already did, Brantley probably won't get more than one year due to age/injury, and Gallo was horseshit last season so no one is signing him to more than one year. I don't see the team trading Kirk or Moreno, and no team is trading a highly controllable LH CF for Jansen. The options were very limited. I was actually warming up to the idea of signing Nimmo but that's when I thought it would take a 6 year deal. Trying to beat an 8 year deal would have been insane. So KK on a 2+1 deal is more reasonable, not in a general sense, but for the Jays specifically. They only had Springer who was controlled after 2023, and their 2 best OF prospects in the minors are in A ball (with arguably the best one of the two just exposed in the Rule 5). This is more of an indictment of how bad the Jays OF situation is than anything else.

Probably a push in terms of WAR

More well rounded than they were before

Astros win with Chas McCormick and Maldonado so anything is possible

Yeah I agree. I would say a push this year. Upgraded two weaknesses and subtracted from a strength. But Swanson has two more additional years plus we picked up a prospect so I think the deals work in our favor.

Worse. Something about getting rid of your cleanup hitter who showed up large in the playoffs for a guy coming off major Hip surgery doesn't call it a wash for me. Teo is entering a contract year so I fully expect him to have the best year of his career.

The reliever from Seattle will need to be lights out in high leverage situations for things to look good for us.

You said words “cleanup hitter”, so you triggered the people now

Ya good point, two and three years of control vs FA next year. Lose a draft pick Teo would’ve brought back.

Raising the floor of the team. I get how people get frustrated watching them make small moves like this, but it’s better than tying yourself to some of these albatross contracts.

I mean, is it better though? I mean if the Jays went all SD, would it be the worst thing, or even a bad thing? It’s only a bad thing because they’re not willing to support the team in that level.

I mean, I’m not crying Jays aren’t SD bc it’s fruitless, but I’m not sure I’d call their approach “better”. It’s just a matter of they want no part of $70m of dead money in 10 years, while SD is like who gives a s***, we’ll be spending more then

So in this case it’s a matter of: “yes we make our team a little less of a WS threat this year but we’ll be better suited for the future”..

Vs a team that’s like “let’s add and win this thing next year”

*3rd, which makes him a starter currently. Everyone saying he's our 4th/5th OFer is out to lunch lol.

Everyone is saying "He should be the 4th OF because we should have 3 clearly better options".

How hard is this to extrapolate?

While I struggle to believe that Keirmaier is worth $12M / season, I still like this deal a lot more than giving Bellinger $17.5M...

Are you putting Merrifield as the 3rd OFer who is better? He is better suited to be the 4th OF and starting 2B.

Also, I highly doubt KK would have signed here over the Dodgers thinking he'd be the 4th OFer. Nor would our front office give the man 2/24 if they thought he was the 4th OFer.

Seems pretty easy to extrapolate lol.

I don’t think willingness to sit on dead money at the end of a deal is a sign of supporting a team I think it’s more likely that Preller and Dombroski know they won’t be there forever and those contracts will be someone else’s problem.

Lack of common sense to that. They aren’t the final deciders on that

I hate this signing. Not a fan of Kiermaier at this age.

I was OK with the Teoscar trade because I thought they'd get a much better offensive OF than this turd. Now I hate the deal. Would much rather Teoscar and get a RP in free agency.

KK @ 12/year is a lot better value than a lot (most?) of the deals signed this off-season.

They really signed him for 12m? I hope they didn't go that high for him. Jays need a HR they still need Conforto. A big bat.

Posted
Ya we still need a big left handed bat that can crack the top 4 of the order. I have no idea who that player will be and what position they'd play but it's def needed.

Who's the best hitting lefty that Shatkins have acquired or developed during their entire era? I'm honestly drawing a blank here lol.

Kendrys Morales??

This is about baseball for me and our organization,” Seidler told the Union-Tribune while — yes, truly — in the middle of a jog. “Fans never ask me, ‘What do you think about spending that much?’ They never ask me that. They say, ‘Man, I love to go out to see Machado and Tatis and Croney. That’s what I get. Why do it? Did we give up too much? That’s about 10 percent of what I’m thinking
