John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Jano's back! Sweet. The RH lineup of death!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Still no Gausman… its been 10 days at this point. Why did they not DL him when it was pretty clear he wouldn’t be able to pitch for a while? Just have him come back after the allstar break at this point. No sense trying to rush him now to be ready for 1 start against KC. And we’ve gone this entire week with 1 less arm in the bullpen, which you could argue may have cost us a game or 2. Poor roster management
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Always have to enjoy this lineup when we get it. Probably won't see it again for a few days at least (unless the team losing actually smartens them up).
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 It's 63 games, not 60 plate appearances. No. He came up on June 11 and hasn’t played everyday.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 1 extra base hit in 58-at bats for Moreno. Wasn’t exactly a glowing showcase for the bat. But he does look very athletic and promising behind the plate. I wonder where all the power went he showed in AA.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 No. He came up on June 11 and hasn’t played everyday. My bad, I thought Martin was being discussed.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 The f***? The Jays were in the playoffs in 2016 and 2020. Here comes the "a 1 game WC game isn't making the playoffs" and "they made the ALCS in 2016 because of the team the previous FO created" arguments to cover up an incredibly inaccurate statement. Well obviously 2016 is AA's team and 2020 was a shortened season where Ryu was top 3 in CY young... that should tell you everything about that season lol. Ultimately this front office has no excuse but to at least make the playoffs this year. If we somehow don't even do that, Shatkins entire tenure will begin to be questioned

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Also Jays '16 to '22 is this FO... they've done well, tying loose ends, not so much. I expect that wrapped up next year. All's not doom.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Did you rip their dart league shirt off when you kicked them off the team? I had to do that once with my bowling team. Those shirts are thick so I was pulling on it for a while before the buttons broke off. No but I definitely wasn't refunding their leagues fees. (Which is also kind of hilarious because Bob's boss was sponsoring the team for years so Bob and I just use the league dues on bar tabs and never told anyone.) Unfortunately I got kicked out of the bar for life after having one too many on NYE in '98. I've tried to get in several times since and they still won't let me in there but I took a couple of peeks through the side window and the trophy is still on the wall with our team name on it. Anyway, my point is that Chucky is way too soft and so are the players. A little yelling never hurt anyone, I don't care what you young people think (which includes my two youngest sons and youngest daughter). Sometimes you gotta be tough with people.

All's not doom. Hmm. When did they start? I forget. Dec 2015? Bo was drafted 66th pick in '16. 2016 is more like ShAAtkins. What a s*** show that must have been. Anything good/bad you have to give 'em all credit for it.

You say that because Ryu is s***? The guy was awesome from 2018-2020. So bizarre.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 So Berrios struck out 13 in 6 innings last night. Can anyone smarter than me determine if this was just a fluke or did he made some tangible changes that may suggest he's returning to prior form? I know someone showed a graph to illustrate his release point had dropped significantly this year. Did that change last night? xFIP is now down below his career average, but xERA is still awful. Good to see the K/9 rise up above 8, trending towards career averages. Any thoughts?

Berrios has made his career from his breaking pitches tunneling off his fastball. When his breaking stuff flattens out with non-effective velocity to turn to, you get those six ghoulish starts. Last night and even the game before he’s seemed to get the quality back in that fastball and his breaking stuff was dancing. With a free swinging, not very good contact team in the Phillies you get a K performance like last night where his FIP was 1.05 I believe. Those who like to speculate suggested him moving back to the middle of the pitching mound helped cure whatever was ailing him. By the way me answering your question isn’t to imply “I’m smarter than you”, just providing insight on what I’ve seen with Berrios this season.

His average release point was higher than his season average, but it's not like it was his max this season or anything. I don't really see anything popping off the page, just a bunch of tiny improvements. Release point was not super low, his zone% was solid... the only things jumping up that I see were chase rates and in zone whiff rates but those are results not causes. I agree with the above poster. Tiny improvements + a swing happy opponent. I actually thought he hung several curveballs early on and was perhaps lucky not to give up a homer.

But last night he was pitching off the third base side of the rubber not the middle. When the season started he was on the first base side. He career norm was to be on the third base side like last night. Don’t know if this has a tangible effect but he seems to think so. If we get more of what we saw last night go for it I say.

Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Berrios, to me, feels like a pitcher that plays off what you are guessing. Aside from his 2-seamer that runs to the right and his slurve (which he doesn't use that much anymore for w.e reason) runs down and to the left, every other pitch is a hittable pitch. He keeps you off-balance by changing eye-lines, speed (with the different pitches, even varying FB velos), and get the ball and throw (no time for the batter to really think). If he makes the quality of pitches at the locations that he needs to, he'll do fine. If he doesn't and misses them, they are all meatballs ready to get smoked. Thankfully, he hardly ever walks anyone (which he did a LOT during the 6 starts he was terrible) which means most barrel/HH% end up hurting for a solo-HR at most or a streak of lucky hits after a hard-hit. I think he's a fine 4th, but the contract doesn't justify that he's a 4th. We'll see how it develops; if he keeps us in the game every time, then that's okay. The 13 Ks are definitely Phillies being swing happy (though Nick struck out once swinging, once looking) but his chase % on savant is back up to 85 percentile and his opponent's xwOBA is trending in the right direction.
BlueJaysFever Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Statistically he’s a very good 3SP borderline 2 SP in his career. Six/18 poor quality starts doesn’t change that.
