TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Author Posted April 3, 2022 Collins vs. McGuire is a loss of 2.0 fWAR in 2021 stats (McGuire was 1.3, Collins -0.7) but Collins absolutely murdered baseballs at every level of the minors between 2016-19. Possible they see something in him that they can unlock.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Key difference is that Collins appears to be optionable whereas McGuire was not. Collins looks like he's pretty weak defensively so if Jansen were to go down with injury that would leave Kirk and Collins as the primary catching options, that would be a pretty big step down defensively.
Buster Verified Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 They traded way down in war to get options?
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Not a fan of this trade but we never know.
FantasyNewb Verified Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Collins is projecting to have more War than McGuire. And now we don't have to keep McGuire on the opening day roster. This is a big win. Who really wants McGuire on the team when Jansen and Kirk will start the year and Moreno on the verge of a call-up.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Would have been some great tweets potential if they traded him to the "Yank"ees

NiagaraJaysFan Verified Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 As soon as I saw this trade, I immediately thought of a potential Guardians trade for Jose Ramirez. The Guardians need catching, no? Could this trade be relevant in a potential Guardians target? Certainly would love a follow-up trade this fine Sunday…
The Iceman Verified Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Ths trade tells me the team was not going to carry 3 cathers once the rosters are reduced for the 2nd time. Jays were going to loose Reece's pieces for nothing. This gives the team an extra LH depth catcher to play in AAA. This is a very minor move on the edges of the 26 man roster.

Certainly would love a follow-up trade this fine Sunday… If anything, I think this trade makes it less likely they're still in on Jose Ramirez. I mean, if the Guardians come back and say they're willing to talk, I'm sure a McGuire/Collins swap is not going to get in the way of that, but the idea behind a Ramirez trade is that Kirk is going back the other way. I don't see them getting rid of McGuire for a guy who is a total project at this point if they're expecting Danny Jansen to be their new starting C.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Pretty easy decision. They weren’t going to start the season with 3 Catchers and McGuire was the odd man out. They thought he would get claimed so they picked up a catcher they are free to move up and down when needed.

Ray Verified Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 (edited) We essentially got left handed Riley Adams with better offensive potential. Edited April 3, 2022 by Ray
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 The return in this trade certainly isn't exciting but it's an addition through subtraction type of improvement. It helps to further Charlie proof the roster by removing a weak hitter from the roster that he would almost certainly overplay. It shows that the team has confidence in Kirk's ability to effectively lead the pitching staff when he's in the game as well. I do wonder how much DH time Kirk will see though as the club was pretty hesitant to do so when there were only two catchers on the big league roster.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Collins has an option? That’s huge for the 3rd catcher
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Collins has an option? That’s huge for the 3rd catcher I agree. We were going to be in a bit of a pinch had we lost McGuire on waivers. Our catching depth in AAA was rather poor.

A catcher we can stash in the minors and not risk having Montoyo pinch hit him for a superior RH hitter too

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 Moreno is gonna start in AAA??? He's obviously talking about Heinemann/Deglan and Bec etc...
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 Moreno is gonna start in AAA??? Yeah but Moreno is not coming up in case of a Catcher injury.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 A good sign for the MLB roster construction but don't expect Collins to ever help the MLB team.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 This. We got something instead of nothing. This is shades of Grichuk. At their face neither of these trades are very appealing, but when you look between the lines you see two instances where the club obtained assets back for guys that were ultimately completely expendable to the team.
