Yuck on its own. I hope they don’t even give up Groshans. Why not aggressively go after E. Escobar for 2 years, who wouldve been easier to stomach at the plate and still play solid D

Escobar is 5 years older, and the difference between his and Chapmans wRC+ was 6 last year. Career wise Chapman's wRC+ is 24 higher (96 to 120). Chapman is a CONSIDERABLY better defender. This is a bad take.

f*** CB man. He goes from making me think about FF 1b, Vlad 3b (which I don’t think would be disaster some think) to a defensive whiz that could possiblly be unbearable in the lineup. Can’t wait for the GDTs

One interesting part of the Matt Chapman addition is that Chapman's biggest offensive failing is his K's and the Blue Jays have helped multiple hitters knock their K rates down in recent years (Teoscar, Gurriel Jr. and Grichuk come to mind).

You also give up literally nothing. Chapman isnt an ideal bounce back guy imo at the plate

Have to believe Groshans will be included.

Oakland could drop him in at 3rd base to replace Chapman and Groshans is otherwise blocked now from 3rd and SS.

Matt Chapman has a .931 OPS with 9 extra-base hits in 14 career games at Rogers Centre. #BlueJays

Escobar in an good year had a .314 on base percentage, Chapman in an down year had a .314 on base percentage.

Chapman is basically Josh Donaldson after 2014 or Semien after 2020 with a higher k-rate.

I'm not saying the k-rate isn't important, because it can indicate underlying issues and will likely prevent him from hitting .290 like Donaldson did when he came here.

Still projected 1.5-2 wins higher than Escobar.

Matt Chapman takes the tingle out of the pants from Freeman (who prob will be some crazy amount I concede), Ramirez, Ketel.. his K trend is very concerning. Why are you sabr nerds pretending that red flag isn’t there. Wait for the GDTs.

Groshans, Smith and even another lower level prospect. I like it.

I’m not necessarily comparing to two directly. Suggesting save your bullets for something better. EE would be stop gap to see if maybe Moreno develops there. JG doesn’t suck etc

Elite defense, good walk rates, and pop, what's not to like, save for the K-rate? Are Marte and Ramirez even on the market?

Shaddup... f*** the GDT's.

It really is a great fit, plus its 2 years which is a nice bonus. Great floor, great upside, great roster fit.

I could see a world where we aren't upset with the price. Pins and needles time till its done.

This doesn't block Groshans in any meaningful way. Chapman is under contract for 2 more years, Groshans probably has at least a year of MiLB work before he's ready.

Unbearable? He's never posted a below average wRC+. Escobar's ceiling is Chapman's floor in terms of WAR.

feel like when a player comes up and mashes for a couple years and then the K rate starts jumping that it's more the league figuring him out. It will be tough for him to bounce back to being a 20% better than league average hitter. A small bounce back. If he's 10% better than league average. Hits some bombs and plays gold glove defense. The gold glove defense is the one thing you can count on. He doesn't have to hit in the middle of this lineup. He's probably 7th or 8th in our lineup.

I’d think Groshans, which is fine.

If freeman and schwarber both fall through, then who?

are we that concerned about getting a dedicated DH with our lineup? Lots of guys will want a breather throughout the season. I wonder if we should be saving our bullets for a BP upgrade instead.

He doesn't need to be amazing with the bat, he needs to be okay with the bat and amazing with the glove. And he has been amazing with the bat before, so it's in there somewhere (whether or not it can be found again is yet to be seen, but this isn't some Kevin Pillar situation).

I'm surprised people seem lukewarm on this. Chapman probably helps the team as much as Freeman does. He might be a half win worse in a vacuum, but he actually plays the team's biggest position of need, doesn't force messy solutions like Vlad to 3B, and won't cost 180M. And he's really, really fun to watch.

This is an absolutely stellar acquisition of my number 1 target going into the offseason.

Our biggest concerns at the end of last season were the lack of a third baseman and poor team defense/general run prevention. The impact that a a gold glove third baseman will have on this team can't be overstated.

Some will being up his handedness, but it needs to be noted that this team led the league in OPS against right handed pitchers last year. Chapman himself has identical splits against RHP and LHP. A lefty bat would be nice, but this addresses far more issues. A Biggio/Espinal tandem at 2B will be really solid in my opinion.

Dude already has 2 6 WAR seasons and he’s not even 29. Literally the best 3B glove in baseball and an above average bat. There’s nothing not to love here unless the cost is exorbitant.

Holy f*** I would LOVE this. Anybody remember Scott Rolen defence for the Jays? That s*** was such a joy to watch.

It would definitely be a treat to have an elite defender at 3rd again

Honestly, Chapman finishes the offence for me (unless we can upgrade on Grichuk). I would like to see another decent util piece with options to make up for Smith being included in this (no, not you Villar), but we've got average or better players at every position now, and some of those "or better" guys are way, way, WAY better.
