The only thing worse than not having baseball is having baseball and not being allowed to watch it. This is such a slap in the face to baseball fans that have already been s*** on. Hopefully the Blue Jays are ignored like usual.

yeah silver lining is the Jays probably don't get one game on apple

Not surprised MLB has gone to streaming services for weekly games. It's inevitable for all sports, but specifically those that rely on local/regional cable. The RSN model is going to change significantly over the next few years, and MLB will need to find a way to recoup some of that money. We will probably see more of these types of deals in the next few years. Exclusive games without any blackout restrictions is valuable, especially for Apple that doesn't have any sports content yet, so I'm sure MLB is getting a nice chunk of change on this one. Whether it's the best timing to announce this just as they are crying poor in labor negotiations is another story.

If the games are selected in advance then I agree, but I hope we don't go into the final weekend tied with the Yankees or something and they just pull the games from Sportsnet.

I'll be pretty cheesed off if I spend $140 a season on MLB.tv to not have a decent amount of Jays games available to me.

Like every person living in Canada? Yeah it f***ing sucks that I have to use my parents bell fibe sign-in just to watch the Jays.

We had it good with MLB.tv as Jays fans for quite a while… no longer

It was nice being able to access every MLB game instantly on my phone from 1 app, until the blackout restrictions. It just takes more steps now. It is what it is.

Yeah, I get it. I use an old laptop set to the big screen with the HDMI to watch sports, there's 3 channels blacked out for hockey right now, so I use NHL66, it's a great site.

Apple TV has some decent stuff, but I already pay for Disney+, Netflix, and Prime (plus a couple of buddies who run Plex servers). Not adding another service to the mix.

Family streaming service swapping is fun

I pay for Prime

My parents pay for Netflix and Crave

My brother pays for Disney+

My brother-in-law pays for Apple TV

My sister pays for nothing. Freeloader.

NBC has also announced a streaming deal for Monday and Wednesday night baseball.

MLBTR estimates that around 100 games will not be televised in the upcoming season.

This may be the end of baseball fandom for me if it continues. I am not paying for 9 streaming services to be able to watch a single product. MLB is going to lose hundreds of thousands of fans to other sports that make their content accessible.

Isn't there a possibility it will also expose and make baseball available to 'other' fans as well? Don't we think someone has thought this through? or do we think it's purely because they can profit on it and they don't give a f*** if it hurts the sport?

Apparently the NBC/Peacock deal is simply taking the games that ESPN used to have, which were non exclusive games on Monday and Wednesday. If that's the case, then the NBC games are likely to be on the local cable channels and MLBtv as well, as opposed to Apple games which will be exclusively on Apple TV. Given the disparity in the amount of money MLB is getting from NBC ($30m/yr) versus what they're getting from Apple ($85m/yr), I can't imagine NBC is getting exclusive games, so it shouldn't impact how fans view it. Instead of airing on ESPN it will be on Peacock or NBC Sports. That's the way I am interpreting it at least, could be wrong.

Call me cynical, but I think harming the long term future of the game in order to make higher profits in the present and that they know it.

Completely agree with Grant

Imagine this scenario - you live in a city where public funds have been used to build the stadium. You already pay $80/mo or whatever for cable or satellite. Now multiple hometown team games per season are paywalled on Apple TV and you can only watch them legally by subscribing to your 7th paid streaming service.

At what point do you just give up and watch girls do bathtub trivia on Twitch all day, every day?

Yeah, I lean more to you, from personal experience I guess. I cut my cable in the last year. Just don’t watch it. Pay for the internet connection only. I don’t pay attention to the numbers but I think it’s steady enough where you’d try to hedge on that a little. Not everyone likes baseball/football enough to buy the Game Pass or whatever, so think it makes sense

You mean you DON'T have a second screen set up for alternative entertainment already?

Can’t you get Apple TV free for a year if you want it? Do people pay for it? Lol

Seems the other ones took off and I always see “get Apple TV for a year”. Or used to anyway

Exactly. It's getting to the point where all providers are rushing to be the exclusive carriers of "insert specific type of entertainment here."

Netflix started the streaming craze and now there's... more than 20 streaming services out there, all with their own exclusive stuff, plus recycled old stuff. TV networks now have their own streaming services so you cant get their stuff anywhere else, largely as a response to dwindling cable TV/satellite subscriptions.

Video games in the near future are all going to exclusive to one platform or another be it PC, Xbox or Playstatation.

It would not shock me in the least that sports in general is going to get to the point where each team in every major sport has it's own streaming platform, and anyone who wants to watch anything will have to subscribe to that team's service, or the general league streaming service where blackouts would be overwhleming and only useful for out of market customers.

Is that trivia in bathtubs, or trivia about bathtubs?

I'm sold. Sorry guys, I give up on baseball (and all other forms of entertainment) to watch bathtub bathtub trivia full time.

I mean it really doesn't matter what it's about, does it?

If Apple TV is your guys biggest problem then we're in a good spot.

Let's get this s*** going, we will have one big free agent move or trade to make!!

Actually the big hang up on the Activision-Microsoft deal is this very issue. The anti-trust watchdogs are sniffing around if Microsoft is going to make all their games exclusive to Xbox. Microsoft has already promised not to. So it should be fine...for a little while lol.

This just seems like the natural evolution of ripping people off. I'm old enough to remember when games were on CTV and CBC. Then TSN came along and you had to get cable. Then Sportsnet came and they placed that on a different package from TSN.

I'm at the point now where I am comfortable with the radio broadcast. Most of the summer I'm out somewhere then driving back in my car anyways.

Yeah, although to be fair, the games on CTV / CBC were usually just Friday and Saturday games (sometimes Sunday). When TSN and Sportsnet came in, that was when you could actually see most of the games.
