I would think the system would measure the players automatically when walking up, then set the strike zone as if they were standing straight up. You could squat if you wanted to, but it wouldn't affect the zone. Since that makes too much sense though...

I think it measures when the player is in their stance. But, it's not stupid, if someone just radically and intentionally over crouched it would be able to compensate.

Saunders reports that Statcast uses the previous calls of major league umpires to build a database of the top and bottom of the strike zone for each hitter.

Isn’t that ironic? Until MLB comes up with a machine-comprehensible definition of the top and bottom of the strike zone, machines will need the assistance of humans to define the strike zone for the machines.

Its from a few years ago though. What will be really interesting is whether breaking pitches are more effective with roboumps, given it uses the 3D strike zone when human umps use more of a planar one

How is it ironic that a computer needs assistance from a human? All computers and programs are created from human input.

I had forgotten about that candidacy change. :(

This is the greatest news in the history of baseball news - every user should be liking this post! Automated strike zone in MLB in 2023?

Does the automatic system account for players having different squatting positions? How about if they change their squat "on-the-fly" like Puig in the image below?

If the hitter decides to sit on the ground that's his choice...but the strike zone should not change one inch.

Not particularly important, but there's a dearth of baseball news and it's tangentially Jays related...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the height of the strike zone is determined based on his stature during a typical swing. The question is - what if you never swing?

Rule 2 – Section 35 – STRIKE ZONE

2-35 The strike zone is that space over home plate, the top of which is halfway between the batter’s shoulders and the waistline, and the bottom being the knees, when he assumes his natural batting stance. The height of the strike zone is determined by the batter’s normal batting stance. If he crouches or leans over to make the shoulder line lower, the umpire determines height by what would be the batter’s normal stance.

We seem to have a lot of intermingled interest in players with the Dodgers. We seem to sign a lot of each others guys.

Hughes should just tell Cooperstown he'll refuse his HOF election unless Bonds and Clemons can join him!

Joe West has had the dream boomer life. Stick around and suck at a job for way too long, getting paid. Then when things start to get hard for the industry (statcast, roboumps), ride off into the sunset with a sweet retirement.

Damn. I never even had the thought that Davis might have been on steroids.

Yeah. Gotta love it.

Some other umps retired too, Fieldin Culbreth, Kerwin Danley, Gerry Davis, and Brian Gorman along with Joe West.

Fergie is classy. He tried to ring Joe West to congratulate him on his retirement.

But Joe missed the call.
