Also before I hear RA has a 125 wRC+, I play 9 cat fantasy baseball and he’s not the asset there he could be, in terms of optimal outcome

Oakland might have still been better than most teams at some things 8 years ago - Beane was a competent GM and they might have still had an information edge on most teams. Both of those advantages might be gone now. Almost everyone they acquired last offseason saw their value plummet in 2022.

We won't know if those advantages are gone for another couple of years. They are only 1 year into a rebuild and if it works as it has before the 2025 team will surprise.

Quick glance at Esteury Diaz - 85 stolen bases, line drive power, .447 on base percentage. I am guessing based his ranking and the reaction of people on the board the park factors, the batted ball data, pre-2022 performance, scouting reports are all not as glowing as last years stats scouting report.

On the other with rule changes (shift and larger bases), continued decreased levels of offense, it could turn out this guy's skills will play well going forward. I don't know. If they still have an information edge this is what it looks like.. people surprised at the move because the information it is based on is not known yet.

I mean he's not the best OF in fantasy baseball but it's hard to ask for more than 6th best

Randy is worse in real life because he's not a plus defender, even in LF. That's the big bummer.

Ah he does steal I guess but the .750 OPS thing is underwhelming.

The Guardians have signed Zunino for 1/6. Cross them off the catcher list.

It seems like possible trade partners are dwindling pretty rapidly. Pittsburgh signed Heinemann as a stop gap, Cleveland brought in Zunino, St. Louis signed Contreras, and Minnesota signed Vazquez. It's starting to look like Houston or bust as far as potential contender fits for Jansen.

Might have to just wait for a potential deadline deal… or spring training injury

Yeah if the plan is to trade Jansen then options are limited now. Astros, Cubs, and maybe the Tigers. A D-Backs trade is going to involve Kirk or Moreno, and not sure the Jays want to do that, so hanging on to all 3 catchers might be a possibility now.

It seems as though the front office may have overplayed their hand a little bit. Atkins stated that the Jays value their catchers more than the opposition does and perhaps their asking prices are set a little too high accordingly. I certainly wouldn't want them settling a subpar offer ala Oakland though so I'll just try to remain patient.

I'm not particularly enthused about the idea of Moreno acting as a super utility player as he shows so much potential as a catcher. He has plenty of things he needs to smooth out behind the plate that I don't want him spending a lot of time and energy learning new positions. Rostering three catchers just doesn't leave a ton of time for Moreno and Kirk to work behind the plate in order to continue to develop their skills.

Maybe they’re just planning to move Moreno back to the infield. Chapman will be gone next year and 2B is kinda open too.

It's still December, lots of time

Jim's right. Lots can and will likely happen between now and opening day. No need to rush anything. Remember how often injuries happen - Moreno starting in AAA isn't the worst case scenario possible.

Time will tell if the bat plays sufficiently to man a position like third base. Moreno obviously hasn't had a lot of MLB at bats so far but up to this point he performed like Santiago Espinal with less power. There is no guarantee that the power fully returns to anywhere near the level he produced in AA in 2021 and he's basically been a slap hitter since then.

Stripling signs with the Giants for 2/25, with a player opt out.

That's a very reasonable deal in this market.

Nice deal.

Loved what Stripling did here but the upgrade to a guy of similar per-hitter talent who can eat significant innings in Bassitt is worth the added cost.

Last year was painful with no decent #5 SP, Berrios getting yanked early all the time, and Stripling only being a two times through the order pitcher.

Its like San Francisco's signature signing strategy these days is sign a guy for a multiyear deal, but let him walk after 1 if he does very well.

This offseason has been great. Not only is Toronto doing smart things, but the O's and Red Sox look pathetic.

I was very mildly worried that Baltimore would spend and become a real pest in 2023 but it doesn't look like they plan on it.

The Giants may have found themselves an absolute bargain with this deal. If Stripling performs anywhere close to his 2022 levels he'll be in line for a nice payday next offseason.

Yeah what happened to the Baltimore spending spree everyone was talking about?

Hope that team sucks next year and 2022 was a fluke

I thought it would make sense for them to sign Correa.

I guess they still could but I have not seen their team rumoured around any free agent.

Later in the season the ropes were taken off of Stripling and he became more than a twice through the order pitcher. He pitched a minimum of 6 innings in 7 of his last 9 starts, facing an average of 22 batters during these outings.

Agreed

Red Sox are a complete mess with no direction and once again might be the worst team in the division as the rosters currently stand.

Orioles seem ready to strike but just aren't quite "going for it" yet.

Not really. They let him face a few more hitters, a few times... but he was stilling getting yanked for the most part after facing 21 or 22 batters.

Maybe there needs to be a designation for a 2 and a half times through the order pitcher to fully appreciate pitchers like Stripling.

I dont understand why any free agent would want to subject themselves or their families to living in Baltimore.

We can rely on Havok to always come through with a Baltimore thrashing post.

The players probably don't even live in downtown Baltimore lol. Much nicer places just 30-45 minutes away from the stadium
