There are still some big $$ teams who don't have a long term solution at SS including the almighty Dodgers and Yankees as well as the Red Sox now.

Those teams will be all over Bo if he proves he can play SS at an acceptable level

The best approach for the Jays may be to give Bo and Vlad more than they would likely get at arb and buy out 2 FA years. This assumes at least one has no interest in a long term deal.

5 year deal 2024 through 2028. No idea what they are estimated to get at arb, but increase on the estimate by 5-6 million a year and maybe they will agree to include 2 FA years in the deal.

Extend the window before they high free agency.

edit - they would still be 29 (Vlad) and 30 (Bo) when the deal expires, still young enough to get a megadeal.

If the team is comfortable with a contract approaching 400M they shouldn’t have tunnel vision with Bo and Vlad. Machado, Bregman, Soto, Ohtani and Devers might also be hitting the market within the next two seasons, and any of those might make better targets.

I agree this is better than the Bogey deal because Correa is a superior player with skills that should age better.

I think it’s ridiculous that these guys are signing mega deals for 4 extra years in order to push AAV down. I don’t think it’s good for the game but it is what it is.

Ohtani is gonna get 12/480 next year and he’s another UCL injury away from being a 40M DH until he’s 40+

If teams have this much cash they should be paying minor leaguers and pre arb guys more $$$.

Stevie Wonder can see what these deals are intended for. It still leaves a long term liability while it solves an immediate problem. That will impact future rosters for some teams presumably (unless in future they all turn into Cohens) and it’s not great for the game brand to have too many over priced declining players slogging away. You only get so many Pujols 2022 dead cat bounces to milk.

I hope the Jays don't get on this mega deal train, and focus instead on maximizing the prospect pipeline. The latter leads to WS wins.

I agree

the merch/tv sales + franchise value increase offsets the 30-70m you might lose on WAR value easily.

Except the Giants TV deal is signed thru 2032 and merch sales are partially included in revenue sharing. Individuals can help with community development, maybe franchise value, but rarely do they return much on the bottom line outside of baseball related returns

Yeah I guess

Although, the 2026 class has no good 1B or SS I can see other than these two guys.

It's crazy how young Vlad will be.

Yeah and lets hope the Jays can win a World Series with Vlad and Bo under control before they become FAs.

As young as Kershaw when he hit FA the first time. What's really crazy that DeGrom is only about 100 days younger than Kershaw, Kershaw has 15 seasons in the bigs, DeGrom has 9.

Jays would be better served just paying the AAV. Like Correa 8/330. But I imagine the 13/360 is still preferable to players because there’s not another FA and possible family move

This offseason has made paying a 36 year old George Springer $25M seem not so bad.

And Gausman is an absolute bargain. He’s probably break $150M easy in this market.

Yes on Gausman but that’s the thing.. this s*** can change in a year. I mean it prob won’t jump again like this for say 5 years, but then it’ll be like $30m/yr was a deal

The Giants completely s*** the bed by not retaining him. What a steal.

Even the Berrios contract looks better. I mean it still sucks but an $18.7 AAV is close to peanuts now.

Yeah he'd probably get 4 years close to that AAV anyway. We're just on the hook for 6.

I’m just gonna say it. Carlos Rodon looks to sexy with a beard to sign with the Yankees

Didn't see this coming

He might win the Cy Young this year

Hopefully history repeats itself and they trade Devers for a mediocre return.

Mookie Betts trade details

Dodgers received: OF Mookie Betts, LHP David Price, cash

Red Sox received: OF Alex Verdugo, SS Jeter Downs, C Connor Wong

Note: An initial three-team trade involving the Twins was nixed, but the Dodgers and Twins agreed to a separate deal that brought Kenta Maeda and a prospect to Minnesota while sending Brusdar Graterol, a prospect and a draft pick to L.A.
