The Orioles are the best franchise in baseball now

Watch them ditch all their starting pitcfhers and sign nothing but lefties now also, then move the fences back in to a sensible distance after a few years.

Today I learn.

Gunnar Henderson called up today, neat.

It's worth debating whether the Orioles have surpassed the Blue Jays for the coming competitive cycle.

The Blue Jays current MLB performance is clearly better, but not by a huge margin. Moving forward, the young position player cores are comparable with huge controllable talents on both teams. Baltimore's starting rotation is awful, but our starting pitchers make more than their entire team combined.

The farm systems are not comparable. Long term payroll commitments are not comparable.

Which organization would you take for the next five years?

The Orioles are an unstoppable juggernaut.

I would not be surprised at all if the Os end the season under .500, or at least do that next year. They are not this good.

For the Orioles to end the season under .500, they have to go 12-21 the rest of the way. They're playing with a lot of momentum right now, the starting pitching has held up, and they have a lights out BP.

Don't think they'll overtake any of the Wildcard teams, though you never know. We've seen weirder things happen in baseball the final month.

The biggest weakness for Baltimore is their manager, they wont go anywhere until the replace him.

Why would they replace the 2022 AL manager of the year??

Maybe they'll hire Bongos to lead them to the promised land.

The Blue Jays have a clear advantage in MLB performance this year. I would honestly be surprised if Toronto didn't make the playoffs, and equally surprised if Baltimore did.

In terms of short term org health, one huge factor is financial flexibility. Baltimore could add $100 million in salary per year and still have a lower payroll than Toronto. Is Baltimore still a worse team if they spend $100 million? Is Toronto still a better team if they dump $100 million?

On the other hand, Toronto has a huge market advantage. Angelos historically has had no problem spending on a contending team, but Baltimore is a relatively small market that has direct overlap with the Nationals and the million other sports teams in that geographical region. Rogers' market is basically the entire nation of Canada and some of the northern US states. His biggest rivals are playing different sports.

I would personally rather be in Shapiro's position than Angelos, but if Baltimore starts spending money wisely we need to mentally prepare for another major hurdle to overcome in the division.

Yeah fair point, I suppose it depends how they choose to spend that money. If they sign someone like Chris Davis… then its a waste. If they make smart signings they could be good very soon.

Like.. Syndergaard on a 5 year contract? Not good.

Soto on a 10 year contract? Scary team.

Yeah Baltimore would have to spend that money wisely, though they can definitely add some significant payroll if they wanted to which is scary. Orioles had success from 2012-2016.

The AL East will always be one of the most difficult divisions in the AL. Yankees and Red Sox will always spend, and the Rays are always a threat even with a low payroll.

Maybe they actually land Correa this winter.

Imagine if they started throwing money around and went after Correa and Trea Turner. Their 2 largest holes are SS and 2B.

At least we’ll have schedule balancing next year. Won’t have to face the Yanks/Rays/Os for 54 games which would be a f***ing third of our games

Every AL East team will be over .500

It is going to be nuts.

Fully expecting a divisional realignment for 2024 or 2025 when 4 playoff teams come out of the AL East next year

Lol yeah, which is why I think it’s almost a certainty for 2023. Baltimore will be better. Redsox should be better. Rays should have less injuries.
