Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Walker Buehler's elbow surgery now confirmed to be Tommy John procedure, performed today. Definitely done for most of the 2023 season Glasnow is going on minor league rehab stint this week. Recovery time seems to be getting shorter.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Sal Perez shouldn't even sniff the HoF but I think he has a small chance due to the hardware he has accumulated, often undeserved. His stats obviously suck but he is a 7x All-Star and has 5 Gold Gloves, 4 Silver Sluggers and a WS MVP. If he keeps playing for another 5 years or so he could also end up with 300+ home runs, landing him somewhere around 5th all time for a C. Seems pretty wild but I think it's possible. Maybe. All star appearances in the era of fan voting and with even really bad teams having at least one player on roster really have to be discounted dramatically in any HOF consideration. I pray. He was part of 14 and 15 really good teams. As for the silver sluggers 4 surprises me a bit. I thought maybe 2. But again Teo has 2. Not sure the criteria. Same with Gold Gloves. Martin has 1. Is Sal a better defensive C? Lourdes almost got 1 FFS. I would hope the home runs in todays game, given his wRC+, get their due consideration. His career WAR is just so low compared to Yadi Posey and Martin. Who knows.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Canada lost 4-2 to Curacao to get eliminated at the LLWS. Great effort by the kids from BC. Beat Japan. Competed. Down 4-0 in the last inning (6th) they loaded the bases no out. Curacao brought in their top arm to close. Kid hit 78 or 101 from MLB equivalency. They got 2 across and had tying run at the plate twice.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Glasnow is going on minor league rehab stint this week. Recovery time seems to be getting shorter. Glasgow’s surgery was early August 2021, so more than a year ago. Surgery today for Buehler means he likely isn’t back on a major league mound on this same date next season. Therefore , most of the 2023 season will be over which he will have missed.

Agreed, was just a comment not a rebuttal.

I have participated in coaching that level of little league. Love it.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Emmanuel Clase might legitimately be the nastiest reliever I’ve ever seen. What a crazy lopsided trade that ended up being for the Guardians. 1 inning of Corey Kluber for a franchise closer.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Heh... Latest News Aug 23, 8:26 PM EDT EDT Tatis (suspension) said Tuesday that he will have shoulder surgery, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Analysis Tatis opted to forego shoulder surgery last offseason, but with him suspended for the rest of this season and the early portion of next season, he probably has enough time to fully recover from the procedure while he is serving his 80-game suspension. His wrist injury should also be a non-issue when he is eligible to return to action. The Padres wanted Tatis to get surgery on his shoulder last offseason, so this may be a way for him to try to repair his relationship with the team.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Trayce Thompson homered off Corbin Burnes and now has a .920 OPS. How do the Dodgers keep doing this? They're a great organization at building up roster depth. Trayce Thompson when he came up put up some decent numbers in 2015 and 2016. (1.4 and 0.7 WAR) He showed some glimpses of having some decent pop. Injuries over the years since have slowed him down. He was in the Dodgers organization before so that must have helped bringing him back and who wouldn't want to play for the Dodgers anyways? Plus his brother Klay lives in California as well haha. They definitely have got lucky with that pickup since he's provided positive value when he steps onto the field, both offensively and defensively (can play all 3 OF positions). Sometimes deals/pickups like this work in favor of the organization, sometimes they don't. An outfielder like Trayce Thompson was definitely worth rolling the dice on as a 4th outfielder given his skillset. He was on a short leash to begin with, so if he didn't work out, the Dodgers likely would have DFAd him instead of giving him 151 PAs. That's the difference between the Dodgers and what we see with the Blue Jays. Instead, the Blue Jays waste too many ABs on guys like Tapia or Zimmer which is a mistake since it hurts the club more than helps. Again, not saying these deals or signings always work out, though it goes to show you that you can target some interesting 4th outfielders/utility players during the offseason.

I have participated in coaching that level of little league. Love it. I was fortunate as well to do same. My son's team was in a good place to represent Alberta in the Canadian Championships their 2nd yr Majors when most of the team was 12. But Covid hit and that was the end of the road for that dream. The 2020 summer became a make shift 3 team "cohort" and all else was cancelled. All the kids lost that year of competitive ball.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 O'Neil Cruz just hit the hardest ball in the statcast era. 122.4 MPH laser off the wall for a single (because he didn't run out of the box).

I dont think he wouldve made 2nd even if he did run out of the box, the RF had the ball about 3.5 seconds after it left the bat. Fastest home to 1st time in the majors right now is about 4.2 seconds, so even had he run hard out of the box, the fielder wouldve had the ball before the fastest players in ball even got to first.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 And because I know everyone here was dying to know about the Trevor Bauer appeal.. here ya go: "The appeal of Bauer’s suspension started May 23 and now is expected to last until November, [bauer’s lawyer Shawn] Holley told the court. The appeal is heard intermittently, but Holley said she is “working full-time” on proceedings that she said involve “voluminous” evidence and could include as many as 22 witnesses, only four of whom have completed testimony before an independent arbitrator."
