It absolutely blows my mind that Brandon f***ing Drury has a higher OPS than Vlad

Crazy how fast a players trajectory can change

From journeyman to a guy who is gonna get paid this off-season

Time will tell if it's repeatable. Drury is 5th place in MLB among hitters for WOBA/xWOBA split so this could easily be a one time batted ball luck phenomenon.

JBJ is cooked.

46th percentile sprint speed

he's a below average runner now!!!

Drury has a higher OPS but Vlad is a better hitter by most metrics because *points to Jonah Hill*

"He gets on base"

In all seriousness though there's a lot of fluky performance in the Statcast numbers, Drury doesn't really hit the ball all that hard although he has been barrelling the ball often which helps. Vlad completely crushes the baseball though. Drury will likely regress closer to league average hitting both in general and especially now that he's out of the bandbox that is GABP.

I remember when JBJ was signed everyone here thought it was such a great deal. I pointed out I'd much rather have Kevin Pillar for his 4 million dollar deal and nearly everyone disagreed. JBJ has been worth -2.1 WAR for 24 Mil and Pillar got 0.8 WAR for 4 Mil.

I was completely right and I demand a full apology.

Man - I've been on the JBJ is s*** bandwagon for years. Virtual high 5 brother.

Drury always had breakout potential IMO. He showed some glimpses with the D'backs in 2016 and 2017. He sucked with the Yankees in 2018 and then was traded to the Blue Jays. Never got settled here in Toronto. A lot of guys don't put it all together until 29 or 30. Look at guys like Bautista, Nelson Cruz, etc. Not comparing Drury to any of those guys, but he can be a guy who hits 25-30 HR's every season. He definitely will get a nice payday in the offseason.

I thought the consensus around here was that he got too much money after a career year? I think people wanted him but not at that price… turns out he’s s*** at ANY price

Donaldson was a late bloomer also....

My issue with signing Bradley at the time was that nothing in his underlying numbers suggested he would be likely to repeat his batted ball success moving forward. He was a largely declining offensive asset, and then BOOM he had very good success for a season on his batted balls without any real changes under the hood to explain the improvement.

Josh Donaldson was at the forefront of the launch angle revolution and during his heyday regularly punished baseballs. Brandon Drury hasn't shown anywhere close to this level of ability, and is a very strong candidate for some serious regression moving forward. He seems like he's had extremely good batted ball fortune this season as he's produced all of a .318 xWOBA compared to his .370 WOBA. This is the 5th highest split between expected result and actual result in MLB this season. For comparison sake Bo Bichette has almost the exact same xWOBA in 2022 at .322. This makes it seem like Drury's 134 WRC+ is going to be very difficult to repeat moving forward.

Edwin was as well.

Not really, he was in the majors from 22-25 putting up .800 OPS seasons. He didnt reach stardom until later, but he was still a pretty good hitter early on and made the bigs at a young age. Not what I would call a late bloomer when comparing to guys like Donaldson.

I don't think Edwin is a bad example at all for a late bloomer as he reached new levels of performance and established himself as an offensive force at the age of 29 with a 150 WRC+ season. His previous best was 113 WRC+ as a 28 year old.

Jose Bautista is probably a better Jays related example though as he transformed from an MLB journeyman to slugger extraordinaire in September of 2009 in his age 28 season.

Didi Gregorius just got released. The Jays should rehab his knee and pick him up on the cheap. He is still a very good player when healthy and the next team that picks him up is going to be getting a steal.

He'll come cheap at the league minimum but his decline these past two years has been precipitous. Big time pass.

I know the guy personally, it's not a decline. He had a severe negative reaction to the covid vaccine and then tore his MCL and played through it. He's still a damn good player when healthy.

I also know for a fact that the Jays tried to trade for Didi in the winter, but the Phillies wouldn't move him.

That’s cool you know him. Didi would’ve been a good fit on this roster. Hopefully he can fully recover from his injury to get hit #1000 currently at 999

Wow, Noah Syndergaard looked like s*** in his Phillies debut. His fastball actually looks super hittable.
