Trout suffering from Costovertebral Dysfunction at T5; back injury that he has to manage and deal with for the rest of his career.

Injured his back from carrying the Angels his entire career

On a serious note, one of the greatest players (arguably the greatest at his peak) of all time, and 11 years into his career he's played (and lost) 2 playoff games. Brutal.

Possibly a DH for the rest of his career.

If that's the case you would think it really increases the pressure on the Angels to move Ohtani.

Does playing the field exacerbate this injury in a way that DHing does not?

Apparently its swinging that aggravates it.

I figured but I wanted to ask Dr. Jim about his wild speculation that he might have to become a full time DH.

THis is why I dislike narratives that give individual players extra credit for winning championships in team sports, especially baseball. 1 guy makes next to no difference if the rest of the team is constantly average or worse.

Trout is easily the best player of his generation and I dont think its particularly close.

Baseball is not the same as Basketball/Soccer/Football, where 1 player can definitely carry the team to a championship

You could argue Baseball/Hockey are the most team-oriented sports that really require a solid roster top to bottom in order to win

I dont follow soccer, so cant really speak on that, but 1 player cant carry jack in the NBA anymore. And football, even the best QB in the world cant carry a team with a porous O-line and nodoby to throw to.

well the general point stands

basketball, 1 elite player on his own can still make you a contender

foosball 1 elite QB can have a massive impact

in soccer i guess 1 elite player has a bit less impact because of the nature of the game, they just cannot touch the ball the whole time

similar for hockey because of shift lengths and there being 4 lines...

baseball though, has to be the sport where 1 elite player has the smallest individual impact

I thought he was doing better this year. Even including today he's only a 111 WRC+ bat.

Yeah for all the talk about us giving up on Rowdy too soon and missing that lefty bat he's basically a replacement level player. You need to do a lot more in the MLB than to just be an okay hitter with no defensive or baserunning value - in his case actually costing the team a lot of value in both aspects.

He must have Joe Carter like RBI skills. On track for a 30 110 season. Final numbers may look very Carterish.

Some guys just have that skill. I mean it can't possible be that 160 games in the clean up spot leads to 100 rbis for anyone who can get 150 hits and 30 homers.

It has to be special RBI skills....

Anyone see the fangraphs trade value rankings? They have Kirk just 1 spot behind Ohtani.

Kirk for Ohtani, LOL

That's because Ohtani is a FA after next year. Kirk isn't a FA until 2027. 1.5 seasons compared to 4.5 seasons.

They do say in the text that Ohtani seemed impossible to place and they don't think either team would trade one for the other

Tapia is actually way more valuable to us than Rowdy would be.

Also I can’t see us going for someone like Josh Bell at the deadline. If they’re looking to upgrade a position player/bat its gotta be in the OF imo.

Bell really isn't a great fit for the Jays as his presence would only serve to cut into available DH at bats for the likes of Kirk, Vladdy, Springer etc.

Read the article.

For it to happen in a baseball player, we just have to take into consideration what he puts himself through with hitting, swinging on a daily basis just to get prepared and then also playing in the outfield, diving for balls. Jumping into the wall, things like that. And there’s so many things that can aggravate it, but this doctor hasn’t seen a lot of it.

So to minimize the risk of fielding related aggravations and IL stints, it might be prudent for him to DH only.

Also, this is a forum for baseball discussion, not attacks on other posters.

Teams that concern us:

Yankees lose; Red Sox lose; Rays win; Os lose; Mariners win; Guardians win; White Sox lose.
