Don’t expect to see a lot of George Springer during #Bluejays Grapefruit season. He said that while spring training is important, his goal is to be ready to go April 8th. He’s going to take as many live at-bats as possible here at the complex. Seems he’ll only play occasionally.

I don't understand, getting into games does not help him get ready for Opening Day?

As long as Springer plays in some of the games, I'm fine with him doing whatever he thinks he needs to be ready by opening day. It is weird since getting live at bats and fielding should be the best way so let's see.

Sounds like something someone would say who either isn't in good shape or nursing an injury. Especially when you consider spring training is already shortened.

He probably needs less than 2 weeks to get his timing. That's really all hitters need.

Maybe, but maybe he values getting 20 simulated ABs over 2 game ABs (before being pulled for Logan Warmoth or something)

Or he doesn't want to be facing fireballing minor leaguers who don't know where the ball is going.

You don't occasionally play if you're hurt! He's not hurt. He just doesn't wanna risk getting hurt. It would seem even Springer understands what a walking bandaide he is. Relax people!

Idk man. If you’re dealing with an injury you actually do work your back in stages. If he was dealing with an injury, considering the fact the Jays have hardly been forthcoming on this kind of stuff in the past, I don’t think we’d know. So I’d say any speculation is valid, even if not probable

Yep, red flag alert.

Yeah one should look at it this way, if in two weeks we get a new update that Springer would start the year on the 10-day with some nagging thing, would anyone be surprised in how it was rolled out?

Hopefully that’s not the case here though

I don't know if he is playing a little then i can't see him dealing with an injury because that would just be stupid if he is not playing at all then i would have questions.

If he does get into limited action, all eyes will be on him I guess

I feel pretty good about our current lineup.

Any other free agents of interest?

Kenley Jansen if we're shopping in the big boy aisle for relievers, if not a couple of lower tier relievers (ideally on MiLB contracts with spring training invites...)

I'm personally happy with the position player portion of the team.

Team looks really good going into the year, But I think there's one thing everyone is missing

Given the current roster, there is almost no way Montoyo can be as atrocious as he was last year. No more panik, tons of the shitballer relievers are gone, and everyone is healthy at the moment

He'll start Grichuk WAY more than he should, but that's honestly the only mistake (lineup wise) that he can make with this team right now.

This roster should be close to Charlie proof as starting out there will hopefully be very little roster filler type players available to him. I exhaled a huge sigh of relief when Villar signed elsewhere as you just knew Charlie would be playing him 6 days a week.

He will find a way!

McGuire is still here.

Yeah, gotta make sure your 3rd string catcher stays fresh, at least 3 starts a week for sure!

Not sure we really have room for another bullpen arm

Locks or Can't / won't be optioned:

Romano

Cimber

Richards

Garcia

Stripling

Mayza

No options remaining:

Borucki

Other options:

Merryweather

Vasquez

Pearson

I just can't imagine that if Pearson is throwing well that we'll put him in AAA and I see him as a huge part of this team. And if Merryweather is healthy and throwing well - I can't believe we're going to let him waste bullets in AAA. I guess that leaves 1 spot available if we are just going to cut Borucki. It seems almost guaranteed without adding anyone that Vasquez is going to AAA. I guess I could see us optioning Richards

And this is all assuming an 8 man bullpen - which doesn't happen unless we're going with a 3 man bench (13 pitcher, 12 position players).

I just don't think there's anyway we are adding Kenley Jansen right now. I hope we hold back some payroll flexibility and add to the pen if it becomes required during the season.

Rosters are 26 now and there's been talks of it being a bit more in April with the shortened spring but nothing confirmed. Pen will be at least 8 but 9(or more) is possible

You forgot Hatch, Thornton and Kay. All will be in the mix for sure though I don't know what their option status is

Hopefully DFA'd.

Ah - I thought that was a COVID rule that disappeared, but I could be wrong. Still - it seems unlikely we'd roll with a 3 man bench doesn't it? won't our 26th person be a bench guy? (Grichuk, Espinal, McGuire + ???). That's assuming we're going to use Kirk as the DH regularly and thus will carry 3 catchers. I don't know - maybe there is room for another pen arm, but it's tight!

Dude - we aren't DFA'ing those 3. Those are a key component of our AAA starter depth (along with Francis, Stipling and Pearson). We already lost depth in Logue. Typically need 8-10 starters to get through a season.

The 26th man was announced before covid hit so it's here to stay. I would prefer that Kirk is the most common DH and that would require McGuire on the roster and thus a 4 man bench, 8 man pen configuration. I get the feeling the team doesn't like that though as they haven't wanted to do that in the past so a 9/3 config is possible. If the season starts with a 28 or 30 man rosters because of the short spring things obviously open up considerably.

Remember we have Phelps on a minor league deal (probably cut free if he doesnt make the squad.) He actually was one of the better RP we had before he got hurt. Also, Castro, I thought he did ok as well. Its nice to see lots of competition.
