Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Hooooo boy, this is dark. Really need an extension to make this digestible.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Cool, has nothing to do with my post..I was simply talking about his comment on him being third string starter..thats it. This trade could turn into anything, point? Barrios to dickey is laughably bad comparison imo. Is it actually a laughably bad comparison. Dickey was coming off of a Cy Young winning season and at the time of trade Berrios is worth a whopping 2.3 WAR this season, and projected for the eye popping total of 3.4 WAR. He has been good at times during his career but never produced an actual elite season. And to top it off what can the Jays even expect to receive? If he stays entirely healthy and there is actually a 2022 season the Jays may get all of 45 starts out of Berrios in return for 2 top 5 prospects in a very strong system. That is horrible value.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 We legitimately have 3 top of the rotation starters now Plus whatever Pearson and Manoah become I still want a Ray extension
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I mean at this point, it's done. Jays FO has been great to date and deserve some faith from the fans. They know a lot more about Martin and SWR than we all do. That said, it definitely looks like an overpay from the thousand foot level. Unfortunately it appears to be a huge sellers market right now, whereas over the past 3-4 years it's been much more of a buyers market where you could land good players for next to nothing. Bad timing for the Jays. That said, seems odd the Red Sox got Schwarber for next to nothing.

Dickey was a knuckleballer close to 40...any comparison is idiotic..period. Berrios has many more good years left...dickey never.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Berrios is not a TOR arm imo. #2/#3 for 1.5 years. Terrible deal to trade Martin and SWR. Potentially the players wanted Berrios a lot could explain the steep overpay. Maybe they think Berrios will sign a team friendly extension. If they traded Orelvis or Pearson I would have been beyond pissed
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 We legitimately have 3 top of the rotation starters now Plus whatever Pearson and Manoah become I still want a Ray extension Okay but we’re also 4.5 games back of wildcard and little control over 2 of those starters. There are some pretty bleak outcomes that you don’t have to squint to see here.

Not really, berrios is here again next season and the team will be very good, all comes down to an extension..things are not bleak lol at some of theese over reactons. Tis team will be in contention the next few years, so bleak.
4thOFan Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Cracking up at some of you overreacting. Martin is overrated. The Jays have a really good rotation now and obviously an elite offense. Only 2 games back (in the loss column) of the wild card, with 3 head-to-head games against the A's and 7 against the Yankees in September. They control their own fate. The Mariners aren't legit contenders.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I cannot overstate how much I hate giving up Martin and SWR for a chance to maybe, if things break well, lose a wildcard game. I didn't much care for the Hand move, but this one is just asinine. Best case scenario we make it to the wild card and lose in the wild card game. No chance of winning it. I love the optimism..lol
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 As a penny stock trader, I have learned that when the crowd shits all over a stock and whines like a little f***ing girl about it, time to buy. When they praise it like it's the greatest thing on earth, time to sell. Welcome to Toronto Scottie Barnes and Jose Berrios. f*** off Austin Martin and Jalen Suggs. Professionals who get paid handsomely to know 1,000x more than the riff-raff fans determined that it must be this way. I'm still trying to come with grips on the Barnes pick and then we get rid of 2 of our best prospects for a guy who could leave after next year. Looks like Shatkins got pinned into a corner with no other moves available after talking a big game and got bent over.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 So as upset as I am about losing Martin, here's some perspective: The Mariners just traded Alex Jackson for Adam Duvall, a flatly league average player. The irony of Jackson being moved moments after Martin is that he's a perfect example of what could go wrong with a prospect like this. Picked #6 overall by the Mariners, considered by most to be the best bat in the draft and just never put it together.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 You also have no f***ing idea what the rest thought either. Most of us are going by what the major media outlets are projecting and their perceived value. Everyone thinks we overpaid so just accept that. No need to get defensive about Shatkins getting hosed. Dude - someone suggested the Jays probably don't value those 2 as Top 50 prospects. You said the rest of MLB does. I said you have no idea where each team ranks them and correctly pointed out that by MLB, you mean a bunch of media companies/writers....which is super irrelevant. If this helps you, MLB Network seems to love this for the Jays.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 What are these so many missing pieces? Yeah, I don't see a lot of missing pieces. Maybe a plus 3B? Trevor Story might be still in play. I think Atkins has addressed the bullpen pretty well...and we have a top 5 starting rotation in baseball, and our offense is really, really good.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Not a big fan of this move, but given that there's likely to be a lockout, focusing on winning this year is probably defensible given where we are in the standings. If we're doing this though, we had better add at least two really good arms in the pen.

Well, if they really think Martin isn't as good as industry consensus, then this was the time to trade him. If he has another no power year next season his value will be shot. I say this realizing that the return (Berrios) is another question altogether.

JG34 Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Berrios is a great get for the team. Could spark some momentum on the big league club as they didn’t subtract from there. I still think the Jays could’ve received more value in return, but as things stand, they have improved the team.

I love the optimism..lol While I love this team, they're not quite there yet. Montoyo can't manage a pen for s***, the bats have a remarkable ability to go cold all at the same time, but then just go apeshit for a few games, which results in great numbers and a lot of fun, but they've ended up as a just above .500 team. This was not the year to spend prospect capital to "go for it".
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Welcome to Toronto Jose Berrios. Now get the job done. Prospects are just that, prospects. Good proven starting pitchers are rare.

Do you think we're even going to be able to afford him after next year? That's the part that pisses me off thinking we are going to be left with nothing or have an expensive pitcher on our books. I think extension is key, if they sign him to one I am ok with this tbh, if not then def not. Of course they can afford him, the jays have payroll flexibility.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Damn, that give up seems expensive. I have to believe the Jays aren't pulling another Dickie trade here, but your top 2 prospects for 1.5 years of Berrios is kind of a head scratcher, unless an extension is announced. Right now, as of 2023 the only arms we have as starters are Ryu and Manoah. Can't count on Pearson at this point, though that could change. Manoah even could take a giant step back, or be hurt, you never know for sure. Who else is coming up the pipeline? Better hope all those arms they drafted this year get good. If I am in the boots of Atkins, my focus just shifted to getting extensions done on both Berrios and Ray. Ryu, Berrios, Ray as a top 3 through the end of 2023 just became really important IMO, and you hope that Manoah and Pearson round out your 5 while the rest develop.
jerb Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Interesting to look at past prospects Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi At Raps game but quick thought for Jays fans. Judging by reported deal for Greinke, would have cost Jays Drabek, Snider, Hech, plus. Pricey
