xposbrad Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Maybe the team does not view martin as highly as the fanbase.... It doesn't matter, the package they gave up could have landed a #1 starter with a bit more team control. Sorry, really really bad trade. It will look even stupider if the Jays don't get that far this year or next. But, they have so many missing pieces still you don't go all in for a guy like Berrios.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I don't care much for this. And as annoying as Stroman is, him and Berrios project about the same this year. Would have probably just been smarter to keep him. I think stro wore out his welcome, it's not this simple.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Look at our overall payroll, we're like 50 million less than our usual competing years. We gave up 2 amazing prospects for 1.5 years of Berrios and then what do you expect his contract to be? Just a joke of a trade. Amazing prospects because in your mind you're imagining a best case scenario of the players they will be. Maybe the Jays internally have more questions than certainty about the players. I'm fine trading away the pair. I wish it would have been for Marquez. I don't know why the Rockies are dead set on holding onto him given how aggressive buyers are this year.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Again, obviously the Blue Jays don't really think Martin and SWR are both top 50 prospects. They probably have some doubts after watching them all year. They weren't the only ones. I still think it's not a good deal.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Really feels like this deal should have included a Kirilloff or a Royce Lewis - or another piece to help us now like Rogers. Some sort of bone. Agree Should have tried to pry something else in return
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Again, obviously the Blue Jays don't really think Martin and SWR are both top 50 prospects. They probably have some doubts after watching them all year. The thing is, it's not really a question of if the Blue Jays think they're top 50 prospects or not. It's a question of which other GM's throughout baseball do see them that highly and who you could have finessed for a better package. I refuse to believe that all 30 GM's were suddenly clued in on some apparent value loss on Martin and Richardson that none of the general prospect evaluators in baseball heard about. It's just hard to imagine Jose Berrios was the best they could have done for this package even if they were down on them internally.

There's no problem in trading them but you better get more than 1.5 years of Berrios...
xposbrad Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 LOLOLOLOL. Third string starter? Oh please he is top ten pitcher in the league right now... You can not like the deal and not exaggerate to make a point. LA gave up a PTBNL for Danny Duffy who has arguably been the better pitcher this year.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 LA gave up a PTBNL for Danny Duffy who has arguably been the better pitcher this year. Nice deflection...What does that have to do with me pointing out the stupidity of your post?
Benito Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 It's set in stone. Time to come to grips with it. This is how I'm going to approach it. Deed is done. No point continuing to rage and rant. Just have to look forward and hope Berrios helps the team get to the next level.

What you mean is a bunch of media companies think they are Top 50 prospects (although they don't as must don't have SWR in the Top 50). The reality is the online lists don't really mean a lot.

Would have probably just been smarter to keep him. Practically everyone on our 2015/2016 roster hated Shatkins because they wanted to breakup the team. There was a reason why they cleaned house completely. They didn't want any of the older regime players effecting the new regime players.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Don't love it from a value point of view but with Ray and Matz Free Agents next year you had to think about filling that hole if they decide to walk. Getting it done now cost them a shitload of prospect capital but no one that would have helped them in 2022 anyway. I would have much rather seen them go for a 2023 FA pitcher for that price but I trust they did their research. I was always the low man on Martin around here anyway (but loved Sim)
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I cannot overstate how much I hate giving up Martin and SWR for a chance to maybe, if things break well, lose a wildcard game. I didn't much care for the Hand move, but this one is just asinine.

You can not like the deal and not exaggerate to make a point. I see a pitcher who is far from worth the price that was just paid personally. He has produced an xERA over 4. I'm getting shades of the R.A. Dickey trade here. If Martin finds his power going forward this trade is going to turn into an absolute embarrassment.

Cool, has nothing to do with my post..I was simply talking about his comment on him being third string starter..thats it. This trade could turn into anything, point? Barrios to dickey is laughably bad comparison imo.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Same no point whining over two prospects, team should be very good next few seasons. pray no lockout lol. But we shouldn't be in this position to have to "pray for no lockout" for a trade to work out. That is a serious problem.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Extnesion imo is key..they have to sign him longer term to give up those 2. Well the QO does give us more leverage to re-sign him after 2022

Everyone thinks we overpaid so just accept that. No need to get defensive about Shatkins getting hosed.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) I think stro wore out his welcome, it's not this simple. I don't remember the details, but I think things only seemed to get irreparable when he was mad about their lack of interest in an extension? It just seems very fantasy baseball-esque to trade a good starter who wanted to stay, then two years later trade the trade return + a top-25 prospect for a starter who's not meaningfully better than the guy they traded in the first place. Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 As a penny stock trader, I have learned that when the crowd shits all over a stock and whines like a little f***ing girl about it, time to buy. When they praise it like it's the greatest thing on earth, time to sell. Welcome to Toronto Scottie Barnes and Jose Berrios. f*** off Austin Martin and Jalen Suggs. Professionals who get paid handsomely to know 1,000x more than the riff-raff fans determined that it must be this way.

I trust atkins has a good enough view into that then we do, if there is a lockout and they don't sign him to an extension then yeah it's real bad.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 No way we traded Martin for 1.3 years of Berrios, good as he is.
jerb Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 This Blue Jays-Twins trade is an example of why I talk about not citing preseason rankings. Austin Martin had 0 games of MiLB experience coming into 2021. What we know now: Can hit, power a bigger question than expected. Still a very good prospect, but legit questions. JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 Simeon Woods-Richardson. Performance this year has been better than his Double-A ERA (5.76) indicates. But has struggled this year and stuff hasn't always been as firm. Control has been an issue (5.1 BB/9) something that has long been an asset. JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 Twins may be doing a great job of getting two guys who may not have been available last offseason. But both of these Blue Jays prospects have more concerns now than they did coming into the season.

Only time well tell if he got hosed really...just silly reactions as per the norm... Both prospects have struggled this year.

King Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 An overpay in prospects but I am excited to watch Berrios. He's not an ace, but a good pitcher, one with a lot of energy. Should be really fun down the stretch.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Still need bullpen help if we want to do anything this year
