Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 (edited) Jon Morosi @jonmorosi The #BlueJays and #Twins are potential trade partners this week. Minnesota has @MLB pitching and needs up-the-middle position players. The Toronto system has them: Martin, Groshans, O. Martínez, O. López. Also, Derek Falvey worked with Shapiro and Atkins in CLE. @MLBNetwork Was just going to post this... hmm... Names like that, Berrios is a main piece. Berrios and Rogers... for Groshans, Hiraldo, Van Eyk, Taylor Edited July 26, 2021 by Spanky99
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 JD's a great player when healthy, but he's long in the tooth, injury prone, and his contract is terrible. Hard Pass! And he helped to drive Jackie Redmond out of Toronto.

Signal Verified Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Any trades made this year for rentals is a waste as long as Montoya is manager. Only trades that should be made are for players that the Jays will have control over beyond this season. In my humble opinion, trading away top pitching prospects or any top prospect would not be prudent. Jays are simply not that good this year and also think that any talent they do get will only be wasted by Montoya. Atkins needs to walk a thin line this year. He has already made a couple of moves and well, it has not moved the needle much. Think Atkins simply needs to make another move or two to demonstrate that he has belief in the players but not to the point of weakening the talent level in the minors to the point that it will come back and bite this organization in the ass in years when they have a viable manager. I simply think the problems the Jays have go beyond lack of pitching depth. Until Atkins makes a change in manger this offseason, this team is not ready to compete.

I agree with most of this but I actually really like both trades Atkins has made so far....Getting Adam Cimber along with getting RHP Bowden Francis and RHP Trevor Richards for Tellez and Panik , I would do that all day . Get rid of excess and pick up controllable players that are useful. But this team has lost too many games from manager decisions. Fire him today, and have John Schneider take over, might be the biggest impact than any trade.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 No, that was Marco Estrada. 100% That's why I said 'helped'. Added to the slut shaming.

I also really like the moves Atkins has made thus far because he was able to add pieces that will contribute beyond this year and yes, he did not lose much in those trades. And obviously we both agree that Montoya must go. My point in the stating that the moves made already did not move the needle much is because the Jays right now have a manager who simply does not how to use the pieces he already has. But yes, think Atkins has done a good job thus far and hope he does not fall into the trap of trading for rentals and losing valuable chips that could contribute when this team has a real manager and are in position to actually compete for a championship.

Do you think Atkins will get rid of Montoyo at the end of this year regardless of outcome? I don't.

Let's just hope he gets rid of him in the off season, because that's not a guarantee. If Shatkins still chooses to allow Montoya to run the team next season, all faith will be lost with management.

If Shatkins still chooses to allow Montoya to run the team next season, all faith will be lost with management. lol. One bad decision outweighs all the (more important) positives like drafting, player development, and building a strong talent pipeline. I think people will be disappointed. Atkins has only ever praised Montoya from what I've read. There doesn't seem to be any indication his job is on the line. I personally don't know what they see in Montoya, and I'd love for him to be replaced as well. But if keeping Montoya is the worst thing this FO does, I can live with it.
Signal Verified Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Yes, I do. I think Montoya was a fine manager to have as the young players developed but he is not the right manager for a team that is ready to compete. I could be dead wrong, but I do think that Atkins believes that Montoya was the right man for the job when the team was young and developing and possibly the right guy to take the team through all of the problems the pandemic posed. But this offseason Atkins will make a change in that the team has grown up and is ready to compete and have outgrown the limitations of their manager. Montoya did his job but he is now in over his head and I do believe Atkins recognizes it and is simply waiting for the offseason to make the move. P.S. Of course he is not going to say anything publicly in regards to his plans or how he really thinks in regards to the manager. But I will be shocked if he does not make a move in the offseason to bring in a new manager who is better equipped to deal with a team ready to compete for a championship.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Montoyo will be here next year, and there will probably be expanded playoffs, so he will keep his job here forever since the Jays will probably be good enough to be one of the top 7 teams for the next few years (although they’re 8th right now so maybe not).
bronson44 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 This f***ing sucks. We should be in a place to be huge buyers right now. I hate seeing all these rumours on who's available and knowing it's not worth it for us because of our position and all of the winnable games we pissed away. The worst part is knowing it's mostly because they chose the wrong horses for the bullpen in the off season. If they would have thrown darts at the list of relievers, it would have been hard to do worse than Yates, Phelps and Chatwood.

Its probably not going to be worth the return, but I do think the FO will have to be taking calls on Ray and Marcus with 25% odds to make a 2nd wildcard.

Which is a mediocre system.

Ya, speculating on how solid the pen would be with Yates and Merryweather healthy isn't practical. Both had health issues. Hence the 5mm lottery ticket on Yates. Chatwood has good stuff but the BB rate always has been an issue. Hence the 3mm lottery ticket. We love the pen bargain bin, and have done pretty well in there but it bit us this season. Looking for value with pen arms, given reliever volatility is smart, but killed this season for us. They did dump out the cash truck for Springer to make a push. Replacing the 2021 WAR production of Marcus and Ray we got for 26mm is going to be very expensive in 22.
