Imagine that emotional return to the Roger Centre and on that same day the demoralizing message sent while you sell off all your competitive pieces. It's just not going to happen, plus the draft picks for Ray and Simien if they leave are more than good enough reason to keep them unless you get a ridiculous overwhelming offer.

Returning to Rogers Centre for two months shouldn't impact what the team does at the trade deadline, but you are right. The team is not going to sell right before returning home for the first time in almost two years. They waited until the trade deadline of 2018 to rebuild rather than the trade deadline of 2017 because they (meaning Rogers) didn't want to sell when attendance was hot. I don't think selling would hurt attendance in this case since it's limited capacity, but fan interest would probably decline for the 2nd half. That's what they'll base it on. If the team has a bad week against the Mets and Red Sox, then the most Shatkins will do is stand pat, IMO. Maybe there's a trade for a controllable pitcher out there somewhere using some young players they'll have to make 40 man roster decisions on in the winter (K Smith, Taylor), but those are pretty much the two options.

They are in a tough position. If you trade Ray do you have any chance of resigning him? Sports is about confidence. We're slumping a bit at the wrong time. Trading Ray and Semien would be deflating. The team could tank. We'd get a higher draft pick. We'd have money to spend in the off season. It might be more difficult attracting players to the team in an environment where the Yankees and Red Sox both will exceed the cap again. San Fran has a ton of money to spend. There will be a more competitive environment for free agents this upcoming off season vs last off season.

The thought of losing Semien for nothing is not a great thought, because you will get something valuable for him. The reality if they went the sell route, they wouldn't do it until the last minute. It's in the players hands now. Win 5 of the next 7 and the team will buy.

Jays made their impression with both guys. It’s a business, don’t think there would be hard feelings as they’re newbs to the team. The team acquiring them would likely be better playoff contender and I don’t care what any sabr dude says but coming through in the playoffs can add $$$ to your contract. I’m sure if they did a study it would prove it

Jays would be in good spot to sign either guy if money was right

The only way they should be sellers is if a trade for Semien or Ray is an overpay. The only way they should be buyers is if it's a good deal for someone not on an expiring contract. Otherwise they should stand pat. I don't need to hear whining in 2025 about how the team should have traded Semien based on some nonsense rumour like we still hear people whining about Donaldson trade rumours back in 2017.

The Dick_Pole is correct. ;)

This isn't really anything other than Morosi speculation.

A 2nd round draft pick that will not make an MLB roster for 4-6 years doesn't really fit in this org's window. I mean, they are nice to have, but for those guys I think you'd want players a lot closer. I think both Ray and Semien could garner some almost ready for prime time prospects.

If the pick is any good, that prospect can then be traded as early as July 2023 for players who do make that window. Also, I'm optimistic that the Blue Jays are set up reasonably well for a perpetual window. Current roster is young and pretty strong. The farm, front office, size of market and payroll expectations should all land comfortably in the top half of the league. That's a recipe for extended contention.

I posted in another thread but would Biggio + Groshans + SWR get it done?

It's probably a tad light, but it would certainly get Cleveland's attention. There's a chance that just adding someone like Danny Jansen to that proposal is enough to get it done, but Cleveland might want more prospect capital instead.

The Baseball Trade Values system validated it with Jansen involved, anyway.

They'd have to add Pearson to get to his value, Jays aren't doing it. They need arms.

I just used that with Pearson as the addition... :P

That's a fun tool.

Ya its a great starting point for sure. This lineup would be drool worthy for the next few years with him added.

Problem is there might be no baseball in 2022. Trades this deadline might be muted, limited to rentals, given the uncertainty.

This is a good point. I'm optimistic there will be no work stoppage, but MLB and MLBPA have burnt the fans in the past.

You got to think they get something done, especially with all the young talented players that have recently emerged. Way too much money would be lost and the league can't allow fan interest to go down the tubes.

The 94-95 strike still has me jaded to this day. Robbed the Expos of the postseason, and potentially franchise saving run. I am betting they will get some kind of agreement, but it would not shock me in the least if there is another work stoppage. Both sides have shown they are willing to lose tons of money and fans to get what they feel is the best deal for them.

Same case for the Jays, no?

Any chance the Jays might think about bringing Donaldson back? He would be a substantial upgrade at 3rd base and it would be great for the city to have him back on the team.

Oh s***, Frazier's damn good. I'm not so sure on the return to the Bucs. Padres steal again, Preller's a good GM. Edited by Spanky99

I get Donaldson is a good hitter but I think this front office has seen enough of him to rule him out. There's a new clubhouse culture, that I don't think you want to bring him into.

I don't see him being a negative influence. I think it would be a positive. They're a young team. It would do em some good to have a superstar veteran in the clubhouse.

I swear the Padres have bee trading from tbeir farm system for like 3 years. What they've done is absolutely remarkable. Just too bad they're stuck in a division with the Dodgers.

The #BlueJays and #Twins are potential trade partners this week. Minnesota has @MLB pitching and needs up-the-middle position players. The Toronto system has them: Martin, Groshans, O. Martínez, O. López. Also, Derek Falvey worked with Shapiro and Atkins in CLE. @MLBNetwork
