glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Hopefully they will use Thornton in a way where he can stretch out while in the bullpen. He's probably the 4th best healthy starter on the team at the moment depending on how you feel about the Diesel.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 No matter how many times you say it, doesn't mean it's right, lol Thought the 5th time was the charm l
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 That's a surprise man. He looked pretty good. You should call up the front office and tell them to reconsider. Since you’re so intelligent and know so much about the intricacies of the sport.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 That's a surprise man. He looked pretty good. I think he was close, but had his spot stolen by Tim Mayza, who was even better.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 I think he was close, but had his spot stolen by Tim Mayza, who was even better. What's Mayza's velocity been up to? Is he back to mid-90s?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 What's Mayza's velocity been up to? Is he back to mid-90s? In his last outing, sitting 94, peaked 95.3 with the sinker.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 No matter how many times you say it, doesn't mean it's right, lol I don't think anyone can aim the ball on demand. Long term guys can change their approach, so on average they hit more opp-o perhaps at the cost of power, but once they do, the other team will just stop shifting. Not that I know much about hitting mechanics, lol. I am curious why their hasn't been more guys with Wade Bogg's / John Olerud /Joe Mauer approach... I guess for guys who don't have an elite hit skill, the 'light' version of that is Tony Fernandez which just doesn't produce enough unless you play a key defensive position? I mean, once Mauer lost just a bit he couldn't really hit enough for first. Seems Craig Biggio made a conscious decision, perhaps with the help of coaching to completely change his approach. His numbers in Vancouver were a contact hitter with no power... then started striking out in Dunedin, and a year later power went way up. So it's better to be a .250 .350 .450 hitter than a .280 .350 .400 ?? Sounds about right.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Does anyone else think that maybe Orelvis is the Jays best position player prospect? Kid is just 19 and had a way better showing than either Martin or Groshans in ST this year. Small sample size, but the kid is an unstoppable monster with the bat.

He easily wowed me more but like you said, it's a really small sample size. Hopefully a full season in the minors will let us sort this out. Great to have such depth at premium positions. Not sure of Orelvis off season but perhaps he did play fulltime in the winter back home while Martin and Groshans may have not. BUT YES...he sure as heck impressed! One prospect for me that has flown under the radar this spring was Riley Adams, while some fans here has talked how Jansen needs to be worried about Kirk, IMHO he should be more worried about Adams taking his job with the Jays. The only outlier here for Adams is he may be traded due to the Jays wanting more of an experienced catcher for the next 3 or 4 years. But IMHO, I would be happy with Kirk and Adams even with the growing pains.

We'll see how much contact he makes as he gets into the upper minors. He looks like a strong prospect right now and the bat was impressively quick. But don't forget that he also struck out in 6 of his 12 PA this spring. I wouldn't read too much into his spring either way.

He has that kind of talent, but I'm not ready to annoint him as such today. A full season for Martin, Groshans, and Orelvis will give us a real good picture. Don't forget about Moreno too. Excited about seeing these kids in action again.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Ryu, Stripling, and Zeuch. Just how we all drew it up.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Arden suggested Merryweather + Thornton piggyback instead of Zeuch for the Yankees series on ATL, it makes sense to me. Zeuch with velo uptick still has no swing & miss pitch, sending him against NYY is kinda brutal.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Matz has looked really good, why would they put Zeuch ahead of him potentially?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Matz has looked really good, why would they put Zeuch ahead of him potentially? I'm thinking Zeuch is an opener, 2 innings max. Matz following.
Ray Verified Member Posted March 31, 2021 Author Posted March 31, 2021 I'm thinking Zeuch is an opener, 2 innings max. Matz following. I don't think they're planning on piggybacking Matz. Probably Zeuch followed Merryweather or Kay is my guess.

Probably Zeuch followed Merryweather or Kay is my guess. Ya there's no way Matz is piggybacking this year to start at least. We need Matz to provide innings and the only reason why I think hes not pitching this series is because he's a lefty and the Yankees are full of righties. Roark well because he's Roark and he seems haunted by the Yankees from last year. They don't want to start his year off in a traumatic fashion lol.
