You know you have a good offensive team when you can bat Grichuk in the 8th spot

And that's without Kirk and Springer in the lineup lol. We could have 0 easy outs 1 through 9 when Kirk takes over for Jansen.

For anyone wondering what the issue with not striking anyone out and giving up a ton of groundballs, here you have it. Sometimes the luck goes your way and sometimes it doesn't.

Are we sure it should all be attributed to luck? You don't think batters can aim their hits through gaps in the shift?

Only if they're True Cardinals.

Also, Vladdy made a really nice play there, and then Bo made a terribly ill advised throw.

That's fantastic by Vladdy.

It's honestly night and day from last year. It's to the point where I think he can actually play some decent 3B when called upon.

The hitter can, to a certain extent, control in what general direction the ball is going - pull side, opposite field, up the middleish - but certainly not the tiny gaps in between fielders. That's why the shifts are in place, the hitters will have a tendency to spray the ball in a certain direction but given a hard enough hit and a fair deal of luck, a groundball can still get by or make it a difficult enough play for the fielder that a hit becomes possible.

What?

Seems pretty obvious what I meant. I'm not gonna pretend like I played baseball at a high level but even I'm able to direct balls through massive gaps in the field. Why wouldn't you think Major Leaguers can do the same?

I've seen many hits where you can tell by the swing that the hitter meant to hit it through the open area in the defense.

But the data gathered for the spray charts are usually when the defense plays straight up. It becomes on the hitters to begin adjust to how they're being played. I've seen enough hitters with good enough bat control able to do so while some are stubborn by refusing to change their approach.

Just aiming the ball to areas of the field where there are less defenders automatically increases your chance of a hit. I would argue that's not luck and more so strategy by the hitter. Agreed about the hits that go through small cracks between the fielders though.

P.S. you're seeing great examples today of swings that are clearly aiming for the large gap in the defense. That's not luck... thats skill.

Big difference between adjusting your swing when it's good Major League pitchers tunneling three+ plus pitches that all look identical with crazy movement and TJ Zeuch throwing batting practice sinkers and a curve that hangs in the middle of the plate. Ask these hitters to do this with Ryu on the mound and you'll see vastly different results.

We only have one Ryu so majority of our pitchers will probably suffer a fate closer to Zeuch.

Oh and people here were mentioning "luck" in reference to the hits happening today vs Zeuch. I was just mentioning this is not luck just based on the approach so I guess you agree that some of today's hits are due to skill by the hitter.

I mean, I'm kinda okay with it if Bryce Harper is only trying to go for a seeing eye grounder against Zoinks. I mean, since it's obviously a skill that he's using, as opposed to the skill he has to hit the ball 500' to dead centre...

Realmuto runs into Teo. Teo called for interference.

That's always weird to me...

Ya I don't get it. He was just finishing his follow through. I recall a stupid play in Game 5 vs Texas where something similar was ok.

It wasn't only Harper today, at least 3 hits were due to hitters aiming oppo against our shift. Agreed that we'd take Harper aiming for grounders any day.

That was Zeuch's first swinging strike of the game. That's just not gonna cut it man.

He needs a 4 seamer that he throws up in the zone to go with that sinker.

Also, wow... That was just awful Gurriel.
