Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Springer has got to sit a couple games. Doing nothing with that bum knee right now. He looks to be in real pain whenever he swings
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 These things seem to go one of two ways a lot of the time: - the rookie can't throw strikes or finish his pitches (nerves) and doesn't last long - the rookie has nerves of steel and the hitters are screwed because they've never seen him lol... pretty much.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 He looks to be in real pain whenever he swings Well, he does need surgery on it, and was told he can't make it worse. I heard them saying in last night's game he's been repping in CF, and he'll be getting periodical CF starts. I was surprised to hear that.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 I forgot the Rays also got this guy in the Archer trade. Pittsburgh traded what could be a core trio for Chris Archer (who himself is back on the Rays). That was a gongshow trade, lol. I'm so glad the Pirates have a new regime, same owner though. Ughh...
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Even though I'm getting a woody from this team it's the promise of the years ahead that has me really excited as a baseball fan. Now for Rogers not to "turtle" and give the front office the go ahead to make a few $$ additions (which they seem to have in the past). Not sure on what the virus has done to their coffers but I would think the Jays with 40,000 a game could be a money maker for them.

The fun part is though the Jays and the dome are a cash cow for Rogers even without massive in-person attendance for Jays games. Sure reduced attendance may impact the actual Blue Jays revenue, but all the additional revenue the dome and the Jays generate for their other brands is enormous.

I'm simply hoping the front office is able to keep this current group together. Add a few high leverage arms to the bullpen and this team should be a nightmare for the opposition to face for years to come.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Take a roster snapshot TODAY and Toronto is arguably the best team in the AL. Right?

White Sox still tough with that rotation. Hopefully Baz doesn't become a late season Bat Out Of Hell secret weapon for them because I think we might be better than Tampa right now. Red Sox are still potentially terrifying when healthy.

I think Toronto is clearly better than Tampa at this moment in time. Tampa's rotation is down bad. Toronto - Houston - White Sox is a pick 'em. All very comparable. Lineups that are deep 1 through 6 or 7, good rotations.

And would that even be the smart thing to do? Hmm

Hmm I think that's what necessitated the gamble on Berrios. We might lose a Cy Young and MVP caliber player in a division that's not going to get any easier. This could very well be the best team we will have for years. When you have a chance to win, you have to take it and not just assume you'll keep coming back to this point. The young players are going to start to get expensive real fast also. Winning windows can be fleeting.

Hmm We've seen what this team can do when all facets of the game finally started clicking at once. I do see the point that having all of Springer, Semien and Ray on big dollar contracts in their decline years could certainly start to cause some issues 4 or 5 years from now, but I'd still say go for it as this team as constructed is a true world series contender in my view.

There's also the possibility of signing Ray and then trading Groshans & Gurriel Jr + for Jose Ramirez, and qualifying Semien to let him walk. Then you sign a corner OF for a short term deal to fill the Gurriel void. It's a cheaper option and hurts you less on the back-end, unless you extend Ramirez of course.

Cleveland would be fully within their rights to insist that prospects the ilk of Pearson, Martinez and Moreno (not all 3 obviously) be included in any talks for Ramirez given the crazy surplus value his contract creates relative to his production. Instead of blowing up the farm system and the subsequent shortening of the competitive window that would result I would far prefer the Jays somehow manage to convince Semien to stay. That only costs money and no talent needs to be sent out for this to happen.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Love JD, man... The 2015 and 2016 teams were just so much fun and it was great how much opposing fanbases hated the team as so many of the team's best players had chips on their shoulders (JD, Bautista, Stroman before his antics got to be unbearable).

In an ideal world, Martinez, Moreno & Groshans hit their way up and make Springer or Semien expendable, and you get out from under their expensive years early, before the age regression in performance tanks their return.

Winning windows can be fleeting. Sooooo many things went big time right this year for the Jays. Aside from Springer we were mostly healthy. Ray, Marcus, Matz exceeded all expectations. We have capitalize. I doubt any will be back and if they are its at a huge incremental cost. Really the only disappointments were the pen (predictable), Ryu decline and maybe Biggio.

Semien and Ray have been laser focussed all year....... on that big Contract. Will they relax after signing a big Contract for 4/5 years. 2021 is a career year for both of them....... quite risky to sign both.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Would they spend 200-250 million on Semien and Ray? And would that even be the smart thing to do? Hmm the fact that they are under-performing the Pythagorean record record by so much in a weird way make this less important. At first glance they are losing 14 WAR between Semien and Ray. However that is going to be 14 WAR off of an ~100 win projected team not a 90 win team They will gain projected WAR from Biggio, Pearson, maybe the catchers if Kirk get's 400 plate appearance, Springer if healthy. Then they will replace Semien and Ray with someone, even if they don't resign them. Those someone's won't be projected 14 WAR, but Semien and Ray won't be either, It will be interesting to see how it all works out, but there should be a few paths to creating another 90 win projected team.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 It feels like Gurriel has been around forever, yet when you look at this stats he's only really played the equivalent of 2 full major league seasons.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 (edited) I want to give Bo some credit for drastically improving his defense from the start of the year. I, along with some others, were really hard on him but did realize there would be some growing pains required to know if Bo was really meant for the SS position. Good on him! I just didn't think he had the hands for it. But seems to have improved and played pretty well. On the play to his right on the backhand, he has been consistently good. The other day he took a look before unloading an off balance throw with zero chance at 1B. Loved to see that.
