Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Jays have plenty of time to find out what they have currently and then make a trade if needed. The lack of expanded playoffs puts a little more pressure on them but I think the F.O. would be content going into the season as is. Yeah I'm not sure that a guy like Walker makes much of a difference compared to a trade deadline acquisition.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Yeah I'm not sure that a guy like Walker makes much of a difference compared to a trade deadline acquisition. But do we want to fall back so much in the standings with our poo poo starting rotation? Our bullpen got exhausted in a 60 game season so imagine how they'll be during the stretch run in a full season.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Yes I don't think it's advisable to go into the season with the current rotation. And of course, its "cheaper" to add to it through FA than an in season trade.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 I'd be fine with signing Walker or Odorizzi for that matter. I agree though, I don't want either on anything more than a 1 year deal. Sign one of those two or trade for one of Hendricks/Price and we're ready to rock
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 I'm all for signing Walker or Odorizzi to one year deals but I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't. Steamer thinks Walker is worse than a lot of our other back of the rotation options like Stripling or Matz. We've also got tons of multi-inning options we can stack that could provide better value than those two. I suppose Odorizzi could be intriguing bc he's not far removed from a 4 WAR season. It's more about adding depth IMO and if that's the case I wouldn't mind if we simply signed someone cheaper like Porcello or even went dumpster diving and signed Brett Anderson, Shoemaker or Rich Hill who might sign minor league deals. Maybe that would even allow for a Rosenthal signing which could prove to be a pretty nifty move.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 I think with how the roster is now I'd be interested in doing a piggy back situation a few times a week as we have a lot of multiple inning arms. Limit times through the lineup might help some of the guys.

If need be I would sign Walker to a 2-year, but I honestly think Manoah or SWR could be as good as Walker this season. Thornton is my bet to have a decent season if he has a chance to start...ZIPS seem him worth 1.7 WAR in 2021. I would say 2+
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Jays have a crap ton of SPs at the MLB, AAA and even AA levels, looking to either rebound or establish themselves. All it takes is 2 or 3 to be successful and 1 or 2 to be average and suddenly the rotation is much better than expected. Then the Jays FO can always look to bolster that mid season with a trade if the team is in playoff contention. Ray Matz Roark Stripling Chatwood Pearson Merryweather Hatch Kay Thornton Murphy Murray Zeuch Waguespack Castro Luciano Manoah Alggeyer Castillo SWR All it takes is 2 or 3 with Ryu...

Issue is if we make the playoffs, our rotation will be SEVERELY outmatched. I don't even think Ryu should be a teams best pitcher and that he's more suited to be your #2 given his ability to stay healthy. That depth is great to have in case of injury or if we're in a rebuilding phase but our mandate seems to be clear that we are trying to win next year. So let's add at least one strong arm to the rotation before we kick off the season.

The last time the Jays traded for Price they had a juggernaut offense and should have won the world series. They would have too if it wasn't for the lucky ass royals and some godamn disgusting umpiring at crucial moments in the ALCS. And to go along with that juggernaut offense, the Jays had the used up carcasses of RA Dickey and Mark Buehrle along with Hutchison and Estrada pitching the bulk of the innings until they traded for Price and Stroman came back from injury. Unless a couple of aces fall from the sky and land in Atkins lap that's kind of what this team is going to have to do too. Hope 1 guy steps up, hope 1 guy rebounds and then try to trade for a top of the rotation starter if they're in contention.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 Maybe the Jays can trade for good starter. Does taking Moustakas and his contract from the Reds reduce the acquisition cost of Gray or Castillo from the Reds? Gurriel and a top 5-10 prospect for Castillo and Moustakas? Too much or too little? Move Biggio to the OF, Moustakas plays 3rd and gives you another left handed bat in the line up. I'm out on Castillo with what he'd cost. You're probably pretty close on the cost with eating the Moose deal. We definitely do not want to eat the Moose deal because it will screw our financial flexibility. And we don't want to shell out the likes of Gurriel + 3 of our Top 10 prospects, which is the likely cost of Castillo alone. So, with that said, I'm out on him all together. My target is someone like Jon Gray, who only has 1Y left and, with a change of scenery, has potential to be a #1/2 caliber SP. He could also be had for not much more than Matz, because he's coming off an injured down-season in 2020.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Hey, they got something for Fisher. Cash and a PTBNL from the Brewers. He probably bumps Billy McKinney from their projected roster which is funny but also a bit sad

Brewers seem to have a thing for our mildly interesting castoffs.

I actually find Vobelbach intriguing and wish there was a way we could have kept him. Guess he was too similar to Tellez though.

P.S. I came up with that analogy because I still have all my old phones.

Lol you better hope they become valuable or that's lost money. And Vogulbach was an allstar in 2019. I wouldn't judge many players based on last year due to the weird 2020 season.

He's has a career 1.1 WAR across 840 PA, and a career 103 wRC+, which isn't great for a guy who weighs a thousand pounds.
