Hipfan Verified Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 6 years for a 31 year old outfielder i will choose to ignore this and just be excited for the signing. Depending on how it's structured, I wouldn't be too worried about the 6th year. If it's backloaded, it could be problematic, though. All in all, I'm pumped for this signing!
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 I sure as s*** prefer Springer being signed for 6 years vs doing the same for LeMahieu.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 I mean lets be honest as soon as the Jays offered that 6th year and total guarantee of $150M thats what signed him. The jays had to overpay and its not like FO pulled off a coup by getting him to sign. Money talks and the Jays offered by far the biggest deal.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Hoping it is front loaded and there is a buyout for the 6th year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Like wirth Ryu, Jays had to go one extra year So be it So happy right now

No American player is signing with the Jays for equal money, we have to go beyond and above. That’s just CODB.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Lmao at you all immediately analyzing the sixth year. Who cares!!!
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Hoping it is front loaded and there is a buyout for the 6th year. There’s the financial issues of 2021 and still some concerns for even 2022, so prob not front-loaded

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 There’s the financial issues of 2021 and still some concerns for even 2022, so prob not front-loaded What financial issues? Rogers makes their money from the TV revenue, the gate is a secondary concern. They also had something like $12.48 committed to payroll for this season before this signing, so there was some room in the budget.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 I'm super pumped about this pickup. I was starting to grow a bit antsy that Atkins and the front office would walk away and not seal this deal, but they went ahead and got their number 1 target. Now they just need to add a starter and maybe a little infield help and they are fully ready to rock.
jerb Verified Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Mark Feinsand @Feinsand Per source, the Mets’ top offer to George Springer came in around six years, $120-125 million. The Blue Jays took it to the next level and get their man at six years, $150 million. Huge acquisition for Toronto.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Remember TULO? Contracts are a thing. Remember going to the ALCS in back to back seasons?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 So mets best offer was 6/125. I guess Jays really did outbid themselves.

As far as I know Jays don’t have set tv deal since they own network so tv advertising prices and buyers are central to tv revenue. Gate rev is secondary but still 1/3 or so. I know Rogers itself may be doing ok but I think large companies like to treat their different arms independently. Anyways... not sure why I’m arguing the point as it’s time to rejoice

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 We could still really use more pitching help. Hope this isn't out last big move.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Remember TULO? Contracts are a thing. Troy Tulowitzki's final entitlements had zero effect on the Blue Jays rosters
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 So mets best offer was 6/125. I guess Jays really did outbid themselves. There's tax considerations and geography that probably contributed to it as well as not wanting to go back and forth over a few million.

Anyways... not sure why I’m arguing the point as it’s time to rejoice The biggest thing the Jays gives Rogers is free content for its sports stations. w/o the Jays it's poker and darts for most of the summer, so they have INCREDIBLY value to the company as a whole. But yeah, good day for the Jays. They got 1 of 3 of the guys I wanted this off season (but the one I wanted the most...)
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
