Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Report: Springer seeking contract worth over $150M https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2081016 If Kim can get a thread then Springer deserves one too considering we seem like "finalists" for his services at the moment. It's also easier to track all Springer related news in one thread. Article says he's looking for "well over 150 million." I was going to assume that a 6/150 deal would get it done and that both teams are probably closer to the 5/125 mill area. If he wants more than 6/150, I don't see us doing it at all.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Woohoo! Sign Springer!!
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 (edited) Of course he does. I can't see many teams giving him 6 years where he will be 37 years old. That contract can go south pretty quick. Edited December 30, 2020 by wilko

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Don’t get your hopes up on this. “Finalists” or not, which I truly believe we are, we would need to not only top the Mets but make it by so much, or incentivize Springer by so ridiculously much so that he plays for a team in a different country, when he is right next door to New York now, grew up there and family and friends are there. Blue Jays are being used as leverage and we still have a chance, but if we, “win” the numbers won’t even be close IMO. It will be a huge overpay in either AAV or term. It sucks, but we are competing against a player’s hometown team that just happens to be the “it” team at the moment and is our primary competition.

Its always been like that for us and this is no different. Most don't want to come here unless we pay a premium. Aren't many examples of big named players coming here otherwise. Clemons, Russell Martin, Ryu, etc. all came here for the biggest paycheck.

Yea, but that was just a US vs Canada thing or certain markets etc. In this specific case it is vs his hometown area/team.

Most premium free agents go to the team that give them the extra year and money. Everyone wants to play for the Yankees. They gave Cole 9 years and 324! There's hardly a Yankee discount there. That deal is insane for a pitcher. It's not my money. 6 years 30 30 25 25 20 20....get Springer in a Blue Jays cap!
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Term and AAV change s*** like that, we'll see. Correct and still doable. However, I am pretty confident the difference would need to be $10 million minimum. $9 million or less difference won’t move the needle.

Okay, I too think it'll be the contract, but for different reasons. Captain Obvious.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2020 Author Posted December 31, 2020 Waiting for the Springer response saying that's just false lol
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Seems like: - Mets #1 target is Springer - They are confident they will get him, i.e. they will outbid the Jays regardless of how high the $ goes (or the Jays aren't even really in it) - They moved on from Realmuto quickly because of this. Wanted to secure the #2 FA C before someone else did.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Haha... I fell into that HS with Bauer and Heyman from that tweet.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Jays will win this one against the Mets, or sign DJL, hahaha!
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Jays should pivot off. It makes way too much sense for him to go the mets. He'll get his money, family is from CT, stays in America. Plus out bidding the Mets this year means it will be a really ugly contract.

Cohen may be rich, but he ain't stupid.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Mets are constrained by luxury tax considerations. Cohen may be rich, but he ain't stupid. Yes and no.... By all indications Cohen wants to go all in for is first year i could see him thinking i want people to know i am serious and what better way then getting the biggest free agent. They have the inside track because this is his boyhood team and he does not have to leave the country (seems to be consistent with the jays). I feel like if the Jays want him they are going to have to over pay and i don't think that many fans understand this. I read things on twitter about why would blue jays not sign him makes too much sense.... or if they don't they don't care, well its not that easy and it is just my belief is that Blue jays are never really a option for high end free agents. I would be shocked if we get Springer but who knows it is not going to be easy.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Sid Sexiero went on and on the other day saying it is just money, why do Jays fans care? WELL Jays will only raise their payroll so much. If you spend $150 million on a pplayer that $$$ is not available elsewhere. Seems pretty straight forward. Then went on a rant that Springer would be the best Jay since DOC LOL, not a great take that a 31 year old will age well enough to be a better player than Bautista, EE, Josh.

But given the choice of Toronto, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Detroit, I expect most would prefer Toronto. Yes, the Jays would need to pay more compared to the Mets for Springer's services. Maybe same AAV /year, but with an additional year and buyout clause tacked on.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Jays WAY better off for that kind of money to focus on Lindor

While I also share the viewpoint that Cohen will be aggressive, at least they’ve shown they’re not going to bid against themselves and just sign whatever. They moved on from JTR, which would’ve been big splash and as of now, they haven’t met the asking price of Bauer or Springer It’s possible Cohen wants to be aggressive but also respects the baseball people in his circle putting caps on guys

Your upgrading your Defense majorly and your offense a little bit, however then we can focus more on pitching which could use a face lift.

What do you expect? lol
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 f*** Springer, he won't fit here. Concentrate on Lindor or throw that money at DJL and then sign JBJ.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 f*** Springer, he won't fit here. Concentrate on Lindor or throw that money at DJL and then sign JBJ. Any top free agent is going to come with angst on the back end of his year. You don't think a 300 mil deal for Lindor doesn't come with a few scary years at the back end of the deal? DJL is a year older than Springer and looking for a 5 year deal. 6 for Springer and 5 for DJL comes with the same risk. If you think DJL is a better fit and the AAV is lower then go that direction. There are multiple paths for the Jays to improve their team. Any of these paths will involve a risky contract.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 I'm at the point i feel we need either Springer's or LeMahieu's bat in the lineup Because I don't see us acquiring a front line starter anymore this off season
