I will admit I'm probably a little ignorant on this, but why is impersonating someone's accent racist? Isn't it stereotyping?

There are some amazing studies done on how stereotypes effect people and performance. An easy one to explain would be with Asian-American Female and math tests. Asian females were tested in math and were all given a second test. A test group were told before testing that females are terrible at Math. They across the board scored worse. Another test group were reminded how good Asians are at math. They all scored better. The group just asked to write the second test without any discussion before scored virtually the same.

The word racism is thrown around a little too much these days but lets not understate the negative powers of stereotypes. Hurl Talks will be here all week!

It’s racist in same way making the slanted eye pose is. Don’t think either really shows any genuine hatred but you just can’t make those jokes anymore

I guess it falls under the 'unfair treatment of people of a particular race' and by repeating their accent one should always assume it's mocking them. I must say I've never thought of it that way when people say 'eh' or 'aboot' in a Canadian accent or when anyone jokes about poutine or hockey as a Canadian stereotype - but I guess others do.

That's really too bad IMO. I don't pay attention, but do TV networks still show movies like Austin Powers? (which mocks all kinds of British stereotypes)

I’m the same. My grandfather is off-the-boat Italian and I’m never offended by the mafia or Jersey Shore caricatures or jokes. It’s a different world. That’s why I’m surprised they do air Family Guy. I guess I watched the older episodes, they have probably since toned it down

Steven cohen is a f***ing joke. Great example of a stupid man who struck gold.

He’ll be forced to sell the team within 10 years, book it.

Interesting. I never even knew that females being terrible at math was a stereotype. This also shows that positive stereotypes are good? I wonder what would happen if you told them things that aren't stereotypes - would you get the same results? Like if you told them asians under the age of 25 are bad at math...would that affect the results? Perhaps anything negative prior to a test will result in worse results.

I can't help but think of youth coaches. Often in the pre-game speech they will talk about how the other team is strong and how the players needs to have heightened level of focus and effort tonight (or something like that). Are they better to just say lots of positive things to the player pre-game to get results? Perhaps they are.

What about stereotypes that seemingly aren't positive or negative? British people sure love their tea. Chinese eat a lot of rice. Italians like big feasts and lots of pasta. Canadians sure love their hockey. Hockey players are tough.

It's all interesting stuff. I'm opening to listening and change, but can't help but think the needle has moved too far. People are so keen to be part of that moment that sometimes I think they'd rather jump down someone's throat and ruin them than to evaluate the situation and make logical judgement.

I mean I almost question whether we can even make movies anymore. Almost everything is a representation of a culture or race and displays stereotypes for entertainment.

Must not be fun for him to watch the bats this year though. His $300m man has been a pile of poo and so has Conforto and Smith. Clearly he should’ve bitten his tongue though but it is his billions

Its fun when billionaires realize they can’t just buy a baseball championship. Gotta build a team from the ground up, signing a bunch of good players almost never works (Angels)

I think it's more reinforcing long time "learned" stereotypes rather than putting new information in their heads.

I always thought that was a given.

One of the worst posts I have seen this year. Shockingly bad take. Newsflash - don't take blatant racism and chalk it up to be a "slip of the tongue".

blatant racisms = impersonate an accent.

I'm not going to lose sleep as I already know your more woke than me, but that's a low low bar.

I've already granted its unprofessional and crude. But automatically racist, I just don't get there.

As a former Redskins fan of many years, I can attest to this

His apology is as strong as his HOF argument

Sounds like a good apology to me...

Anybody know where to find stats on the use of openers? Feels like its declined since 2019, but I can't find numbers.

The difference there is that the Giants are using him as a last resort while Charlie would go to him in the 8th inning of a tie game. But nice to see he still sucks. I did not appreciate his attitude after blowing multiple games here and taking 0 accountability.

Apparently MLB has managed to piss off card collectors by signing an exclusive deal with Fanatics. Fanatics doesn’t currently make cards, and Topps has been around for like 70 years.

Well that sucks, exclusive licensing is never good for the consumer. Upper Deck has been the exclusive licensee for the NHL for nearly 10 years now and the innovation has virtually stopped, along with higher prices every year for the same crap.

The importance of having a good ,healthy bullpen more evident now than ever with Starters only going 5

Or 6 innings. Be ideal to have a good long man,,a failed starter maybe or even Pearson to go 2 or 3 innings..when needed.

Toro has homered in his first two games with Seattle. Maybe Kyle Seager or whoever will stop trying to run the team from the dugout now.

Hilarious...

Blue Jays do the kind of moves the players would love

Seattle do the kind of moves the players would hate

Seattle 1.5 games ahead of Blue Jays 3 weeks later. Yeah I think part of the reason Blue Jays made all the moves was to 'reward' the players for putting up with all the moves.

Players would of been better off if Hatch took all of hands games, or hell even Elvis the rule 5 pick wouldn't of been worse...

1. Elvis the rule 5 pick as a 19 year old in 2019 (5.35 ERA walked a tonne)

2. Chatwood (5.46 ERA)

3. Hand (10.50 ERA with Jays)

Elvis's stats were from 2 years ago, he's probably way better now.

The Jays care about optics. They make decisions based on what fans or media think, not necessarily what makes the team better short or long term. It's why they started rebuilding in July 2018 instead of July 2017, and why they didn't trade Semien or Ray when it was the biggest seller's market in at least 5 years, if not more. The Rays win every year because they don't have any fans so they don't give a s*** what perception is. Seattle hasn't made the playoffs in 2 decades and even they aren't so jaded to bet on a long shot rather than make sensible moves. Hell, the Yankees in 2016 were basically in the same spot as the Jays were at the deadline, probably a little better, and still sold rather than aim for a 2nd WC spot.

I like Shatkins, but if you want to find a weakness, this is a big one (aside from Montoyo, which is the biggest weakness).
