Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 Just an FYI... the Sandlot is on MLBN... great movie!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 f***ing Yankees. Not only is baseball cancelled tonight, Judge being one of the guys in the protocol and having just gone to the All-Star game is going to cause headaches throughout the league. That could mean that basically every star has to sit for the next week. What a mess.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Cubs trade Joc Pederson to Braves https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2187342 Really hope we luck out with some combination of Kimbrel/Bryant/Hendricks for cheap.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Pederson's stock was basically nothing. Braves gave up a guy outside their top 20 prospects. Former 24th round pick hitting .207 in High-A. Essentially a pure salary dump for the 2M or so remaining on his contract.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Also, don't expect Scherzer to hit the market anytime soon. Passan says both Nats and Phillies are acting like buyers right now.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 So now we don't know if any of Vladdy, Semien, Teo or Bo could have covid. Imagine if those four have to sit a couple of weeks at the same time?

Former 24th round pick hitting .207 in High-A. Essentially a pure salary dump for the 2M or so remaining on his contract. If Bryce Ball gets it going soon, he could be a good get, it's all bat dependent, does the mutual option go out the window now that Joc's been traded? Full Report Ball hasn't just hit, he’s mashed everywhere he’s gone. In two years at North Iowa Area Community College, he put up an 1.108 OPS. Transferring to Dallas Baptist for his junior year, he dipped to a 1.057 mark. Still, he wasn't heavily scouted and the Braves nabbed him in the 24th round of the 2019 draft. From there, he just kept crushing baseballs, putting up a 1.023 OPS in his 62-game pro debut. Ball is an exceptionally large human being who combines raw strength and long levers to produce easy, double-plus raw power. What separates him from most power goofs is some intrinsic hitting ability as well, as while he'll never be confused with Luis Arraez, he makes more contact than most players with his profile. His approach got a bit aggressive following a promotion to Low-A Rome in 2019, and he needs to begin focusing more on pitches he can drive as opposed to ones he can merely hit. Ball’s value is entirely wrapped up in his offensive prowess. While he moves well for his size, he’s still a below average runner and inconsistent defender. Bat-only prospects are exceptionally risky, and Ball adds to the variety of outcomes by turning 23 this year (his birthday is in July) and having yet to play a full season in the minors. He’s looked overmatched at times this spring, but Atlanta is no doubt excited to see if he can put up another quadruple-digit OPS line in 2021.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Imagine if those four have to sit a couple of weeks at the same time? I imagine they are back with the team today and undergoing testing. MLB said they were testing during All-star weekend and nobody tested positive so this may of happened elsewhere. Not going to lie though we are pretty f***ed if our 4 most productive hitters vanish for 2 weeks.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Damn that is news that we didn't need to hear before the feds make their decision. Yeah but I'd love to see the Yankees make a Raptors-like tank from this. It's been so long to see a 68-94 beside a Yankees logo.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Yeah but I'd love to see the Yankees make a Raptors-like tank from this. It's been so long to see a 68-94 beside a Yankees logo. I'd prefer they finish something like 78-84 (with none of the wins coming against the Jays). Bad enough to embarrass them but high enough to where they get a s***** draft pick.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Wow... first rehab start, chucking heat!

The difference between 68 and 78 wins is probably 6th versus 10th in the draft. Totally worth it.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Jasson Dominguez is kinda scary. His 70 speed tool looks legit and might actually be an 80. Finished with one of the ugliest slides you'll ever see but he went 1st to 3rd in 11 seconds.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 (edited) We will delete most strings of Covid debate that have nothing to do with baseball. It has nothing to do with the veracity of the posts. I'm not policing truth. It's just seen as political. In practice I tend to jump in when it becomes clear through a series of posts that the discussion has gone political. It's harder to pick out specific posts, harder to see where the line was crossed and the sports discussion thread was completely lost. And it's easier to identify when people are arguing or it starts to get a bit heated. We are imperfect. Please don't whine like a little bitch if you think it was unfair that your post got deleted and someone else's didn't. I don't even read most of Jim's posts. If I delete any of your posts it might be a quiet compliment because it means I read them. Edited July 16, 2021 by Laika

No idea what got deleted, but the Vaccine Efficiency thing is absolutely baseball related. A couple of posters were giving context as to why a almost fully vaccinated team would get positive results. Most Yankees were given Johnson and Johnson which is 75% effective against any type of infection I believe, however reduces hospitalizations by 95%. So expectation is that that a 85+% vaccinated team gets a big outbreak, 5 or 6 vaccinated players would test positive with (likely) asymptomatic infection, and some unvaccinated players would get symptoms. Relevant stuff to know for topics like homefield location of Toronto Blue Jays, future health and performance of baseball players or even Fantasy Team planning.

You can't just say vaccines don't prevent you from getting COVID because they do. A guy who works for me is still only has his first vaccination. Him and his finance flew out Alberta to help move his sister back and somewhere along the way, she picked up the delta variant. They drove his sisters car home back to Ontario, spending 24 hours together (mostly in a car) for days on end and that one dose prevented him from getting COVID. He lives with her and has been caring for her as she's been in and out of hospital and they test him like weekly and he still doesn't have it. Pretty incredible. The vaccines aren't 100% effective (none are - the flu vaccine is only about 60% effective), but they do wonders. Outbreaks like the Yankees just had are likely to pop up from time to time for the foreseeable future. This is likely something we're going to have to get used to. No different then it will happen in work places and other communities. The most people that get double vaccinated, the fewer outbreaks and the less stress on our health care systems. The evidence is pretty clear.
BuffaloWings Verified Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 The Shohei Hyerbole has reached its boiling point. Literally read an article this week saying that Shohei is the new GOAT of baseball and is better than Babe Ruth. The guy is obviously a monster, but he isnt the best hitter this year let alone better than Babe Ruth. I know a lot of people find the game boring, but the tendency to want to focus on one player, over the fact that the game is absolutely brimming with great young players blows my mind.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Nomar Mazara DFA He has now failed to stick with 3 teams It's pretty alarming he's had almost no success at the major league level. He tore up the minors with solid K rates, but it's never transferred at the ML level (even though the K rates have always been pretty reasonable). He reminds me a bit of Travis Snider - it's just not happening for him.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Bad news for the Yankees: All 6 COVID cases on the team have been confirmed. That means Judge, Urshela, Higashioka, Loaisiga, Cortes and Peralta are all going on the COVID IL. Good news for the rest of the league: All five of the Red Sox All-Stars tested negative. Sounds like Judge caught it from his teammates and not at the ASG.
