The Angels will probably bring Garrett Richards back for 10 games or whatever before he explodes again. It's sad because they legit probably are a Trevor Bauer away from being a very good team. Trout/Rendon/Ohtani/Fletcher/Adell is a very good offensive core, and guys like Iglesias, Upton, and their catchers should all be 1-2 wins at their positions.

2B Jahmai Jones, the Angels’ second-round pick in 2015, is headed to the Orioles in the Alex Cobb trade, sources tell me and @FabianArdaya.

As @danconnolly2016 said earlier, Orioles will be paying more than half of Cobb’s $15M salary in 2021. Effectively buying a prospect; Jones is No. 7 on Angels’ list, per @MLBPipeline.

Meh, Jones has very much flopped in AA; .653 OPS in 178 games. The reasonable upside there is probably below average starter or bench player and the mean projection is replacement level.

Yeah, if things work out you're looking at a slap-hitting utility bench player. Guys like Jones get DFA'd all the time.

The trade looks awful for the Angels on first glance but Jamhai Jones really sucks. The Orioles are terrible so they'll be able to give him a free look but he's probably not any better of a lottery ticket than something from the free agent trash heap tbh.

 

Alex Cobb sucks too but he does project well enough to be a #5 SP if you need one. There are still several backend SP options out there in FA who seemingly would command about the same amount of money. But surely the Angels have checked in on all of them and ultimately decided that Cobb at ~7M is as good of value as any of them.

Also agree about the 40 man being a factor in the Matz deal. I doubt the Angels have as big of 40 man issues as we do but dumping Jones to secure some SP depth isn't going to hurt.

The Angels have gone into the luxury tax once in their history by a few hundred thousand. They have 6 mil left in cap space. Bauer to Jays makes a lot more sense than Bauer to the Angels. I absolutely don't want the Angels to sign Bauer!

Because people want to see one of the best players of all time sniff the postseason? It's pathetic the extent to which the Angels have squandered away Trout's prime despite their main flaw being apparent and unaddressed since he first started for them.

The mlb is dumb as f***. Why would you propose this so close to spring training? This could have been put out there earlier. Now its a big inconvenience for the players.

I think its because there's so much uncertainty around the vaccines and being able to get fans back at games in full force. Owners waited long as possible to get the most accurate view financially before committing anything to the players. Not saying I agree but that would be my guess.

Wish there was a spot for him here but Tellez seems to have his role already and also provides us a left handed bat.

 

BTW... it's crazy that Edwin can reach 500 HRs considering the wasted years to begin his career. I don't see it happening in 2 years at all though.
