#STLCards are talking to the Rockies about a possible Nolan Arenado trade. No word anything’s close yet.

So are the Cubs trying to win then or what. Their other moves have said otherwise.

I read a recent rumor they definitely want a return for Bryant. I think a lot of people just assumed they were blowing it up but they said they were looking to compete while starting to be more financially responsible. NY and Bos had similar revelations in the last decade. Until it’s clearly a fire sale I’ll assume that’s what they’re doing; repositioning

They’re still a competitor in an open division, playing in one of the biggest markets...with some competition for fans across town that has an exciting young team. I don’t think it’d be wise to nuke the team

They are attempting a skinny rebuild. Shed payroll and get some farm injections but still try to sneak into the playoffs.

That division isn't very good so it could actually work

Though they'd stand little chance against the Dodgers Padres Braves and Mets

and if the team doesn't perform, they could flip Joc at the deadline for more farm injections. Similar approach the Jays took in 2017-2019.

Yeah if they don’t compete seems they’d have a flurry of moves they could make with the expiring contracts

Names possibly going to Rockies include LHP Austin Gomber, 1B Luken Baker, OF Jhon Torres. Return also might include RHP Jake Woodford or RHP Angel Rondón. Exact package not confirmed.

Arenado not giving up opt out nor no-trade clause in deal to #Cardinals according to sources

Jesus f***ing Christ... Did the Rockies get desperate?

Did Arenado get desperate? I did not expect him to restructure his contract..

There has to be a very significant prospect or package going back the other way. Arenado can opt out after the season, and makes 35M per year.

Deal unlikely to be official tonight and maybe even not this weekend. Arenado will need to formally waive his no-trade clause and his opt-out after 2021 also must be addressed. Approvals from MLB and union necessary as well, as reported in initial tweet.

So the Rockies are giving up their best player and 50 million cash and getting Austin Gomber+ in return.

Wtf is this deal?

Posted
I'm out of the loop, but why is Colorado moving him?

They're basically rebuilding. Story is a FA after the season, Blackmon can opt out after the season, Arenado can opt out after the season. It makes sense. There's a pretty good chance those guys do opt out. The return and the 50M is the big question.

It's weird because on one hand the Cardinals are giving up a package based on the assumption that Arenado opts out but then why the f*** are the Rockies eating a potential $50M+ of his contract?

I think the names are just Rosenthal guessing.

The #Rockies now will try to lock up SS Trevor Story with Nolan Arenado off the books. Story is a free agent after the season.

None of it makes sense. Either the cumulative reporting is in error OR the Rockies are just making an all time horrible deal. We will see tomorrow.

If he was guessing why would he be guessing those guys in particular lol? It's definitely his sources telling him those guys are included or were heavily discussed.

Makes no sense for them lol

Could the $50M only be provided if he doesn't opt out?

Okay so it makes more sense now. Rosenthal is saying Arenado would keep his opt out after 2021 and GAIN an opt out after 2022.

The Rockies eating $50M probably only applies in some complicated way if he does not opt out... Or maybe some of it applies in 2021 regardless. We will see.

That would justify the s***** return because STL likely only gets one year of Arenado.
