BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 I don't understand why everyone seems to think the Yankees got a deal on LeMahieu. He's 32 years old and just got a 90M guarantee.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 I don't understand why everyone seems to think the Yankees got a deal on LeMahieu. He's 32 years old and just got a 90M guarantee. He's earning 15 million per season and seems to be getting better yearly. Sure the last year might be bad but to get these next few years at that price is amazing for them. He can also play 1B during his last few years and still be productive with the bat. Most would have assumed he would get 5/90, which would still be a good deal. Yankees seem to have gotten an extra free year for him. If you don't think that's a great deal then I don't know what to say.

DJ is in his age 32 season this year and he got 90 guaranteed. Seems like a deal to me.

If you don't think that's a great deal then I don't know what to say. MLBTR projected him to get 4/68 at the start of the offseason. Median FG crowdsource was 3/45 (lol). He only got 24M two years and less than 900 PA ago. I know he's been outstanding the last 1.3 seasons, but this is a guy who sucked at hitting for almost 4000 PA before 2019. I don't think it's obvious that the Yankees are happy about this deal 2 years from now.

Not sure if you remember this but he won the MVP and had an 8 WAR season and stuff.

Not sure if you remember this but he won the MVP and had an 8 WAR season and stuff.D DJ was on pace for an 8 win season, coming off 2 very good years in which he was healthy. JD missed 50 games, then almost missed an entire season, came back and had a nice 4.9 WIN season, but not near his peak, he was 2 years older and he got his 92 mil over 4 years AAV of 23. As I said, 15 mil for DJ seems like a deal compared to what JD got even if you feel he was a better player considering the injuries.

The amount of cheap Homers I saw him hit at Yankees stadium seems like his bat was made for there.

Honestly wtf are you even talking about DJ got less guaranteed money than an older player who had a far superior track record but recent injury problems. Why is it even a comparison? Very different players and circumstances "On pace" for an 8 win season doesn't mean much from 2020
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 If you want to force a comp for DJL you use someone like Jose Bautista - another guy who had something really click later in their career. Jays were wise to never give Bautista his mega-extension and his last good year ended up being his age 34 season. Decent chance the Yankees are paying $90M for ~3 more good years from DJ and the Yankees know it. If they get lucky he's still useful once his skills start to erode but he is a slapdick player so he might just pull a hard Daniel Murphy and cease being good at like 33. Please recognize this you f***ing idiots.

Don't berate Jose like that with this comparison pls lol. Not sure why there's hate for the DJL contract when the Jays offered 4/78. Yankees are basically getting an extra 2 years for 12 million. He's an awesome fielder who can easily transition to 1B full time during the last 2 years.

Donaldson who's 2.5 years older projects better than LeMahieu by over half a win in 10 fewer games.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 DJ only loses out if he’s still playing at Justin Turner’s level at 36

It's a fair contract. There are morons in this thread acting like the Yankees got him for a song though, and I'm worried someone like saskjaysfan might hurt himself this evening.

This contract might as well be 4 or 5/90 with some money deferred, because he's probably not playing for the Yankees by the end of the deal.

Why is it even a comparison? Very different players and circumstances "On pace" for an 8 win season doesn't mean much from 2020 I'm saying Donaldson had a higher injury risk premium than DJ. DJ put up a 5.4 win season followed by a 2.5 win season in 50 games. Donaldson had a 4.9 win season going into his free agency year preceded by 2 injury plagued years. You think the twins signed him thinking at age 34 to 38 he was going to be able to capture his past glory and be a 7 or 8 win player? I think they thought he could be a 5 win player for 2 or 3 years. DJ looks like a 5 win player for the next 2 to three years. JD got 23 a year. DJ got 15 a year. DJ's deal when you consider the tax implications was a far better deal than JDs deal even if you think JD was a slightly better player at the age of 33. Are you trying to say that the Twins got the better value?

I think DJ will have more FWAR than JD next year. For a team that pays a 50% luxury tax and 8 is more meaningful.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Are you trying to say that the Twins got the better value? No. Learn to read. I said pretty clearly you shouldn't compare the two
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 No. Learn to read. I said pretty clearly you shouldn't compare the two You can compare any 2 players and contracts and who got the better value. These two particular players are ones where one got 92 mil guaranteed and one got 90 guaranteed. They seem like the ideal guys to compare value wise. They got the same money! I wouldn't have even mentioned JD if BTS hadn't said that he didn't think the Yankees got a good deal. I just took the player who got similar money and given the years and luxury tax consideration and all that goes into suggested that DJ deal represented far better value and why some feel the Yankees got a deal.

FWIW, I wouldn't have said JD's contract was team friendly either. 92M is a lot of money for a 34-year old with chronic calf issues, regardless of how good he is when he's able to play.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Lets see the reaction here if we give Springer a 6 year deal lol.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 We're probably going to have to lol. Ya I agree but everyone here seems like they'll hate the deal with a passion lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Ya I agree but everyone here seems like they'll hate the deal with a passion lol I wouldn't have hated it if Toronto gave Lemahieu the deal he got. I don't hate it for the Yankees. It's like the Ryu deal - it's probably not going to be a $/WAR success story, but it doesn't have to be. I just don't think it's particularly team-friendly for NY.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Are there any other suitors for Springer than the Jays and a very warm Mets feel on this? We needn't bid against ourselves, but Jays should offer 6/135 and be done with it. Push everyone off. What say you, mofo's?

Just hope it is front loaded so he is paid as the best player in the early going and not in the later going, when he will not be.
