saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 What do we think the Yates deal vs Doolitle's? I'm guessing you have some thoughts! Do tell.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 (edited) I'm guessing you have some thoughts! Do tell. I guess I'm wondering if we overpaid But maybe the Reds got a deal. Or maybe there are good reasons to believe Yates is just going to be much better. Edited February 3, 2021 by G-Snarls
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I guess I'm wondering if we overpaid Doolittle was a nice pick up for the Reds. I wouldn't mind him at that price, but he throws his fastball 80%+ and velocity dropped. Yates is a fastball split guy. Yates had bone chips cleaned up. Doolittle had knee and oblique issues. Understanding how pitchers recover from bone chips vs knee and obliques is above my pay grade, but I'm happy overpaying for yates on a one year.

I'd much rather have the more sure thing for more $ and it sounds like that's what we got

Or maybe there are good reasons to believe Yates is just going to be much better. I think there is a much higher chance that Doolittle is completely cooked. I mean they both might be done, but in Yates' puny 2020 sample he had his normal velocity and he missed bats.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 What do we think of the Yates deal vs Doolitle's? Doolittle is done. Yates may be done, but is much more likely to be good.

Or maybe there are good reasons to believe Yates is just going to be much better. Doolittle's fastball velo tanked last season. Yates was also the best reliever in baseball the season prior. We paid accordingly and so did the Reds. They are currently not in the same ballpark in terms of perceived value around the league.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Canadian media just has to let everyone know Paxton is Canadian in the headline. Canadian baseball is also important to most fans of the team. It only makes sense for them to do it.
jerb Verified Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith On a Zoom call with Toronto-based media, Ross Atkins said #BlueJays’ efforts to add are ongoing. “There hasn’t been a pause button … there may be another add, or two.” Asked about major-league deals for free agents, Atkins said there “certainly could be the potential for them.” Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Asked about the #BlueJays' off-season to date, Atkins said: "I can't imagine better fits than George Springer and Marcus Semien on the position player side." Also added Jays are "really excited about the pitching acquisitions (they) have made." Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith One of those pitchers, Steven Matz, will have the chance to break camp in the #BlueJays' starting rotation. No guarantees of a starting job, though. "We'll see," Atkins said. "He'll have to earn that."

RobinThicc Verified Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Bring back Walker on a one year deal Lets us be major players in FA next year.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 I kind of admire Nightengale for being so bad at his job but yet confident enough to keep chugging along like people still take him seriously.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 OK so yeah let's trade for David Price
bendera3 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 OK so yeah let's trade for David Price That'd be great. I wonder what he would cost with us taking on the next two years of the contract.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 That'd be great. I wonder what he would cost with us taking on the next two years of the contract. I can't imagine it would be much if it's a salary dump, and there aren't a lot of teams w/ money to spend right now. It would be hilarious if they traded him to the Mets though.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 I'd be OK with Price and Josiah Gray for Hiraldo.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 OK so yeah let's trade for David Price Trade for Price, sign Rosenthal and call it an offseason for the ages!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Trade for Price, sign Rosenthal and call it an offseason for the ages! Bigger offseason 8 years ago, brah.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 (edited) You mean, what it would cost the Dodgers to send him to us? Yeah He was essentially the extra cost of getting Betts They can't expect an actual return on him We can add payroll and they will want to subtract Edited February 5, 2021 by G-Snarls
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 You mean, what it would cost the Dodgers to send him to us? David Price is going to be the Justin Verlander reborn. People counted Justin out. David had some niggling injuries. He had cyst in his wrist removed. That's something that he's probably pitched with the last few years. Some discomfort, but something he could pitch through especially considering the amount of money he was making. Still 3 years of a 3.6 FIP and one year of a 4.02 FIP is not bad. A full year off, cleaned up the cyst David could easily post a sub 3.5 FIP. 16 mil a year for Price will be a massive Bargain. I'll include him in my bold predictions. I think He's going to have a great bounce back year.

I remember you wanted to give a 36 yr old Bautista 4 or 5 years.

I remember you wanted to give a 36 yr old Bautista 4 or 5 years. Boston is paying half that salary. He's only making 16 a year. You think anyone over 30 is going to fall off a cliff. You must hate the Springer contract. You're misremembering on Bautista. I was all for bringing him back at a reasonable price. I probably would have done 3 or 4. Sometimes players age well, sometimes they don't. Price is 35 hasn't played in a year and his numbers haven't been bad the last several years. Did you read about the problems he played through with his wrist and his loss of feeling in his hand. He's addressed that. He's going to have a very good year. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/david-price-7536/
