Ray Verified Member Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 So if takes more than "a bit more" fine. My opinion is dealing from a position of strength (position players) to improve a weakness (pitching) is appropriate. You could use a completely different narrative and state the Jays are a Ryu injury from having Ray as the No. 1 starter. Or you could keep Teoscar, add Marwin Gonzalez for like $3M a year since he was horrible last year and shouldn't cost much, and sign Odorizzi because the quality of starter you're going to get for Teoscar is not going to be much better than that. Wow, look at that, we've now improved a position of weakness without sacrificing anything from a position of strength, and it just cost cash instead of prospects and cash.

Sure that's another option, where you get a weaker pitcher.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Sure that's another option, where you get a weaker pitcher. You also retain a much better outfielder. You could sign Paxton and potentially get a better pitcher, and retain a much better outfielder.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 You also retain a much better outfielder. You could sign Paxton and potentially get a better pitcher, and retain a much better outfielder. Of course, these are all options. Nowhere did I suggest one option is better than the other. None of us know because we are not privy to the discussions Shatkins is having with FA and other teams.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 I know I said Odorizzi the other day, but the more I think about it the more I prefer Paxton. Highest upside, one year, lots of K’s. Odorizzi would raise the floor of the pitching staff but what the Jays really need is another potential impact starter near the top. Lots of money off the books again next year to go shopping at the top of the market again. Full Atlanta method where you pay guys big bucks for one year. Rinse and repeat. The longer you win the easier it is to target those players.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 1/12 with a 14M option and 1M buyout. That would tickle my fancy.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 1/12 with a 14M option and 1M buyout. That would tickle my fancy. I'd do that for sure. Out of the SP left on the market, Paxton probably has the most upside. Albeit, he's an injury risk.

Honestly, how many pitchers aren't injury risks? It's just the nature of the position. The amount of workhorses in this league are marginal. Just don't tie yourself down to any non elite pitcher. Cole's of the world are the slim minority.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 Did you just say that Cole isn't elite? If not a Harvaard or Yaaale man it is preposterous to consider anyone other elite. Hip Hip, Cheerio!
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 Final offseason moves, my predictions: Rick Porcello signed, 1 year deal, Kluber money Justin Wilson signed, 1 year deal Joe Panik signed, MiLB deal but he breaks camp with the team
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 Final offseason moves, my predictions: Rick Porcello signed, 1 year deal, Kluber money Justin Wilson signed, 1 year deal Joe Panik signed, MiLB deal but he breaks camp with the team I really think we're getting Paxton. If we were the 3rd team for Bauer then I'm confident we will outbid teams for a 1 year deal for Paxton like we did with Semien. The potential for Paxton to bounce back and us getting a comp pick if he leaves sounds too sweet.

jerb Verified Member Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Hearing that Matt Shoemaker's weighing multiple offers with a decision potentially coming this week. Veteran RHP had a 4.71 ERA with 26 Ks, vs. 9 BB in 28.2 IP last year & pitched well in his lone playoff start. #BlueJays not believed to be involved in the bidding at this stage.

I really liked him but the guy just cant stay healthy. I'd take him as our 5th start over some of our current guys in a heart beat but we're already committed to enough bottom of the rotation guys.
jerb Verified Member Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 (edited) Scott Mitchell @ScottyMitchTSN #BlueJays have claimed 26-year-old RHP Joel Payamps off waivers from Red Sox, per source. Seven career IP with D-Backs last two years. @ChrisCotillo on it. Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Payamps is a righty ... some big-league time with Arizona & recently pitched well in the Dominican Winter League. Jays’ 40-man is full so someone will have to come off. Possible his stint with Jays is a short one, as they may need more 40-man room soon. But you never know... Edited February 11, 2021 by jerb

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 11, 2021 Author Posted February 11, 2021 Yamaguchi DFA’d. What a great day.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Yamaguchi DFA’d. What a great day. Would have been better if it was to make room on the 40 man for Paxton instead of Payamps, but still a good thing.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I don't expect Payamps to stick around long. Maybe they can sell him to a Japanese or Korean team.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 There are still numerous players who could be DFA'd or traded for cash without any regret. I'm not sure Derek Fisher plays a regular season game with Toronto this year. Out of options. Ty Tice is completely fungible. Same with Josh Palacios. Payamps of course is cuttable. Zeuch or Wag could be traded for a light return.

I get that those should be taken with a grain of salt, especially when they're coming from the the team. Lots of reasons for them to potentially pump his tires.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 For me, Wag's is the most obvious one to let go from that list.

Happy to chance my opinion and move him out of the danger zone. He seems interesting to me but also very much an in between OF prospect.
