Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Could you imagine if he's the next Cito? Team rallies and wins the WS in spite of their s***** manager? Hah, their demeanor is the same.

WILLIEUPSHAW Verified Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Could you imagine if he's the next Cito? Team rallies and wins the WS in spite of their s***** manager? Cito won 2 championships in a row. I'll take that any time, no matter what he does to get it done! The atmosphere Montoyo has established seems pretty positive considering the team fought back from an early 8 run deficit last Wednesday (only to go on to lose 14-11) and then again this Thursday from an early 7 run deficit. His leadership seems to be positive in regards to helping this young team be 'scrappy'!

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Charlie’s tactics are questionable, but the players seem to get along with him. It’s easy to look good when the players are heating up. It’s easy to look terrible when team is cold and every little nit pick can cost the game due to low margins for error. He’s definitely lost us a few games this season, but nothing we can do about it now. He’s not going anywhere this season. I just want him to be more firm with the umps when they make questionable calls, at least stand up for your players. He looks soft as cashmere out there just nodding to the umps for everything. I miss that about Gibby. He doesn’t have to blow a tire every bad call, but at least act like he cares about the game and trying to win. Montoyo also tolerates too much BS from our young players making mistakes, guys need to be held more accountable for stupid little league errors. Clearly it’s a young team so growing pains will be frequent, but those base running decisions and fielding errors can’t be acceptable in the MLB (e.g. Teoscar dropped the ball and cost the team runs). And it’s not like once or twice a week, it’s Every single game.

Gibby was good at giving people 'the business' when they had it coming! If Chuckles doesn't get more 'assertive' he won't last, because the players will lose respect for him.

It is a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking by us fans a lot of the time. The bunting is hard to say for certain. IF the guy can put a good bunt down, it is reasonable, but the problem is most of these players nowadays don't even know how to bunt..... I understand the argument: like how many times do you see a bases loaded with 0 outs and the team fails to score (how the f*** they even manage that level of ineptness - so why give up a free out!!!)....... Maybe, it's all about that old-fashioned concept: execution?

All I can say is the worst thing to avoid is GIDP (especially problematic with Vlad Jr. coming up to bat:p) I agree Montoyo and Gaston are/were not great 'in-game' tacticians, but overall Cito won and hopefully Montoyo (or someone else will with the Jays soon). What do people think about Bobby Cox? All those great teams starting with Jays in '85 and perennial playoff team with the Braves but only 1 WS championship to show for it. At the end of the day, it's all about the rings, baby !!

Man do I miss the team being owned by Labatt. The team won in spite of Cito, not because of him. Also, I think Cox was a great manager, but I didn't start actually watching the Jays until after his tenure, I was stuck with Jimi Williams, who was a miserable son of a bitch who it seemed that literally everyone hated.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 What about the player development of not bunting? I don’t want Danny Jansen to learn to bunt. I want him to learn to hit dingers late with men on base. Making a young player bunt steals a chance to learn. I mean fair enough. I don't care if they bunt or don't bunt as long they don't bunt 150 times. Whether it's 4 times a year or 30 I don't care, unless it is hurting the players somehow. The only guys that have bunted are the .150 hitting catchers. 4 bunts this year (all catchers). However if the 2 are related, that Jansen and Reese have been bunting in the late innings when they should of learned how to hit ace relievers, if that is the case then stop the bunting if it is making our catchers suck... but it's probably not exactly the case and Charlie's bunting isn't unusual in any way. Charlie bunted 14 times last year https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/2019.shtml Gibby bunted 30 times with a high on base percentage home run crazy offense (this was before 300 homers was the new 240) https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/2015.shtml
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Extend Montoyo Bronze statue on Yonge and Bloor, SW corner.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Can we change the title of this thread to extend Charlie Montoyo? What would their record be with Gibby at the helm?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) I don’t wanna give Gibby too much credit and sound biased, I’ll go with 22-1. Edited August 21, 2020 by BlueRocky

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Tonight's lineup (not a typo): 1. Gurriel 2. Grichuk 3. JANSEN 4. Hernandez 5. Vlad 6. Shaw 7. Drury 8. BIGGIO 9. Espinal Montoyo might be the worst manager in the history of sports, nevermind just the Jays franchise or MLB. Every team sport ever played.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Worst coach I've seen in my lifetime, worse than Jay triano and that's hard to do

"trying to get Jansen's bat going" "I like Biggio to get on base and turn the lineup over" Biggio must have insulted Charlie to his face!
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 When I initially read the pop up on my phone it was oh Biggio just got the day off and then I saw Jansen hitting third and it just kept getting worse. I’m now not even mad just depressed: (
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) Biggio has hit .417 in 12 PA against Yarbrough, and Jansen .000 (6 PA). I figured maybe Buntoyo was using a small sample of H2H numbers to justify this, but that actually makes the move look worse (which is tough to do). "Turn the lineup over" isn't a thing, Charlie. It never was a thing. No one bats one of their best hitters, if not their best hitter with Bo out, 8th. No other f'n team in baseball would do this, in any era. Edited August 21, 2020 by glory
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Biggio has a .467 OBP vs. LHP in 30 PAs this year. This is a guy that you are trying to build around. There is not a single reason why he should hit 8th today. Montoyo has the Rays -1.5 RL
