glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 They need to start facing heat in the media if Charlie is back next year. Absolutely no reason to let this buffoon torpedo another season. I think that's the frustrating part in all of this. An otherwise smart front office doesn't seem to see what fans and media see clear as day. This is not armchair QB's who nitpick everything, this is universally across the board accepted that Montoyo's in game decisions are awful. They were awful in 2019 but the team was tanking so no one cared. The team's entire 2019 season hinged on trade returns, and yet he let Ken Giles pitch 3 days in a row right after coming off the DL/IL, which got him re-injured and untradeable. Even the easiest things couldn't be done by him. Now there is a full 162 game sample of how bad he is, and right when the team's competitive window has begun. Chances are they won't let him be a lameduck so they'll either extend him or fire him, and I'd be absolutely shocked if he's fired. The Jays need a Masai Ujiri type in the front office who doesn't mind firing the coach of the year because being good is not the objective, it's being great. What they do with Buntoyo is going to tell a lot about their mindset, IMO. You can find a lot of managers who can keep a clubhouse happy, and that's really all he seems to know how to do well.
Buster Verified Member Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 They were shredding Chuckles on 590 this morning. Was pleasantly surprised. Can you elaborate?

We already knew full well that Charlie was in over his head managing a major league squad based on the multitude of absolutely baffling lineup and in game strategy decisions that we've been witness to up to this point. The thing that I hope will break the camel's back with respect to the front office's view of Montoyo is the complete lack of urgency in games in which the club's entire season hinged upon. In 2 of 3 games in the Yankees series he stayed with the starter too long despite having help warming in the bullpen. With Ryu this lead to 2 extra runs after the lineup turned over a third time, and with Ray the final 2 runs of the 4 run Yankee outburst should not have been allowed to happen. I can see sticking with Ray after the Rizzo home run, and I can even maybe excuse the second Judge home run, but Ray should have been unequivocally removed from the game at this point. Seeing the manager sit on his hands and hope for the best when it's obvious that the opposition has locked into the starter should be a fireable offence, but we can only wait and see if the front office views things this way as well.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 Can you elaborate? I mean, just complaining about his moves, and his moves over the course of the season. Basically "he might be the best guy to keep the team loose, but he's got to make the right decisions in game..." Same sort of stuff we say here, just without the name calling
BlueJays Verified Member Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 I mean more the fact that he didn't seem to care about pissing away games at the time. Must be the benefit of having the full support of the front office.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Needs to be picketing outside Rogers Centre to get this f***stain gone. Gonna miss the playoffs by a game and he's the biggest reason why.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Everyone is having fun though. Isn't that what it's about?
BlueJays Verified Member Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Everyone is having fun though. Isn't that what it's about? and they are working hard too! If they didn't, they wouldn't be 1 game away from making the playoffs!
Jaysareus Verified Member Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Montoyo alone accounted for at least 10 losses
BCZ Verified Member Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Montoyo 100% needs to be fired. We just became the first team with a .600+ Pythagorean win percentage to miss the playoffs since it expanded to 10 teams. Yeah but but MOY candidate
Buster Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 They aren't actually going to fire him, are they?
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 They aren't actually going to fire him, are they? No. He's here next year I do believe. If they fall short again.... maybe.
BlueJays Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Has he been fired yet? Ask again by the end of 2022 season.
Skinny Wolf Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I think that Montoyo will be fired. It seems some coaching staffs are not happy with moron.
Tacoma Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Montoyo is a nice guy, a decent manager for a rebuilding team. But he isn't the right manager for a team with Championship aspirations. Time to move on.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Remember the time it was 1-1 in bottom 9 and the Jays had their first two hitters walked aboard by a totally wild Gregory Soto and then Valera pinch-hit for Kirk and made a series of terrible and obvious sac bunt attempts and then finally got something down but straight to the awaiting 1B who was positioned closer than the f***ing pitching mound who then made the force out at third and then Grichuk hit into a double-play and then the bullpen gave up three two-out runs in the top of the 10th.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 This thread is good for blowing off steam but we all know he's not going anywhere. He's got the built in excuse of playing home games in three cities blah blah blah, I've already heard the narrative in the aftermath. The weak-kneed media will give him a pass, management will give him a pass, and on we go.

Remember that time Charlie brought in TRAVIS BERGEN against the Rays with the bases loaded in the 9th 2 outs and we were winning 4-3??? Bergen proceeded to walk in 3 runs. May 23rd game. Check the box score and weep.

Starrynova Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Worst manager in the league. Blew at least 10 games single handedly with his idiotic bullpen and pinch hitting decisions. Fire him now.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I got the feeling with Charlie that he wasn't taking each and every game seriously. No one can convince me that he didn't throw that game against Cleveland to stick it to Chatwood. It's just inexcusable. Unless the team is in first place late in the season by 10 games, every game is crucial and important and they need to be managed that way.

A beta manager is not suitable for a championship team, and that's the bottom line. The guy is an idiot.

Remember in the alternate universe where instead of rolling with these guys, Montoyo pulled them for equally s***** also-rans available to him at the time who blew the games anyways and people still used these games to complain about his BP management?

Unless the team is in first place late in the season by 10 games, every game is crucial and important and they need to be managed that way. It worked didn't it? Chatwood finally got jettisoned and the team traded for some competent relief pitchers. Then they settled in post-trade deadline. Blowing those couple of games early in the season may have resulted in the team winning several more late in the season. Charlie's always playing 4D chess. I actually wouldn't put it completely by him to be one of those passive-aggressive types.

There is also an alternate universe where Dark and Faithless Montoyo buries Jansen and Gurriel in the second half because they were horrendous in the first half and the team is mathematically eliminated before the Baltimore series.

The beta and alpha think is a joke. I think. I don't know. I started joking that Rizzo was an Alpha because he was always in the middle of every f***ing rally the Yankees had. f***ing Rizzo. Even yesterday. 9th inning. Hit a hard single in the 9th that set up the winning run. Rizzo is Alpha. Rizzo for manager.
