Laika Community Moderator Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 The Blue Jays have the top bullpen in MLB by WAR and a top five bullpen by both ERA and FIP. 22nd in SP WAR, 22nd in FIP, and 14th in ERA. Let's acknowledge how f***ing stupid it is for anyone to criticize the team - Charlie or the front office - for going to the pen early. The only possible context to criticize would be if Ryu is getting yanked for a s***** reliever.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 100% agreed. It's not like Carter was an outlier, even today. Plenty of examples across sports of legends hanging on too long and their teams s***ing bricks for a while. Pujols, Kobe Bryant, Sedin twins. Only NFL teams dump their guys quickly. Otherwise you have to be Chris Davis level of bad or Tulowitzki level of injured to lose your spot. As much as I go on and on about the 90s in half my posts, as a fan I really look to the future. There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing young players surprise me. This weird season has had some great moments from Teoscar, Rowdy, Gurriel, Bo, Biggio, Merryweather, Romano, Hatch.... nice to see. Of course it is small sample size. I won't really believe in Charlie and the organization until I see a positive 162 game season, development, reasonable health, players meeting and exceeding expectations from April to October. I mean this weird little season could still go off the rails, or be spectacular, it's so little that random positive or negative s*** the next two weeks will shape it.

If he was letting guys like Merryweather and Borucki go 3 innings or so rather than using 4 different guys for the 6-9th innings then not having those guys available the next day (or the next few days) it would be different in my mind. I've never been a fan of the quick hook, though.

The guys being asked to go most often are the utterly replaceable veterans like Dolis, Cole, Gooch, and Bass. It's not like Buntoyo is out there ruining any great young arms. The roster rules this year make it pretty hard to actually tax the pen.

Maybe "taxing" wasn't exactly the right word, I specifically mean using 3-4 of your "high leverage guys" in one game, then not having your any of your best arms available for the next game because of it. He doesn't seem willing to let guys work back to back days, and he insists on using too many relievers every game so we get stuck with the Wilmer Fonts when we could really use a Romano in a tight spot.

It's also a small sample size.

What it does mean is that anyone flippantly criticizing Montoyo's decisions on pitcher usage should pause and consider the possibility that they are the one who is outdated and wrong.

There is no right or wrong....as we will never know what the outcome would have been had it been different. Managers will get criticized, it's a part of the job.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 We have a lot of multi-inning relievers too Yeah I don't get why taxing the bullpen is a concern. It's a short season and we have like 10 million starters in the bullpen so why should trash like tanner roarke be needed to go deep into games. Hell I would just tell him to sit out the season cause we don't need you, come back next year when we need some of your s***** innings in a 162 game schedule.

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Sorry Tanner, all of your pitches have Covid. We'll send you to Dr. Andrews but we may need to cut your dick off.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 We have a lot of multi-inning relievers too We do. And yet how many times have we had to use 4-5 relievers in a game, each going 1 inning.
polar bear Verified Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 I guess not Well there you are.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Villar at DH today instead of Fisher. In case you thought Fisher would get more of a look with all the injuries.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 And some of those criticisms are f***ing stupid. Sure, and some aren't, glad we solved that mystery.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Villar is a toy Atkins should definitely not have given to Montoyo.
TheDragon Verified Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 hey montardo: me explain simple, make understand. okay? -bunting not good. you stop player bunting. -every game big. you try win all game. you call smart man like john gibbons, ask how win game. -if player do dumb thing, you point finger and shake a lot, you tell player not do dumb thing again. -gurriel good, shaw not good. you move gurriel up lineup. you move shaw down lineup. -grichuk bad again. you move grichuk down lineup. -germ bad. you stop touching mask every 3 second.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I want Gibby back Is getting picked off a mental error or a physical error?

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Today on BJMB we discuss mind-body dualism. Is it a mental error if something is physically wrong with the player's brain?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Today on BJMB we discuss mind-body dualism. Is it a mental error if something is physically wrong with the player's brain? But like, are the mind and body even REAL man? Like, if you really think about it?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 But like, are the mind and body even REAL man? Like, if you really think about it? There is no spoon
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Is getting picked off a mental error or a physical error? Depends on what better fits the narrative. I think Charles is being smart here, because by not calling it a mental error, he kinda takes the wind out of the sails of people who would cleverly retort that his entire managerial career has been a mental error. 4D Chess erryday
