TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2020 Author Posted June 20, 2020 (edited) Sorry for how late I am on this and for not being around for Draft Day coverage for the first time in a long time. Been incredibly busy lately between work, planning a move, and my wedding coming up in a couple of weeks. Was incredibly excited to find out about the Martin pick when I did. Looks like the Jays had a banger of a draft in general. Gonna have to start making more time to start following baseball on a closer level again. Some notes: The Jays have $7,454,825 remaining to sign both Frasso and Martin. If Frasso were to hypothetically sign exactly for slot, that would leave $6,905,825 leftover for Austin Martin. I don't see the Jays sacrificing future first rounders (give me that Kumar, baby) so they'll have to make do within these parameters. Don't want to jinx it but Martin doesn't really have a whole lot of leverage so hopefully it all gets done sooner rather than later. Sources for the above signed picks: [Rd 2] CJ Van Eyk | [Rd 3] Nate Palmer | [Rd 5] Zach Britton | [uFA] Harrison Ray | [uFA] MacKenzie Mueller | [uFA] Zac Cook | Edited June 20, 2020 by TwistedLogic
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 5 rounds makes this thread a lot less fun this year
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 It’s hard to criticize this draft result at all, even if they only took Martin and punted the 4 picks after it would be a huge win. But the 77th pick is quite curious, as there were some good talent available in the 3rd round that they passed on for Palmer. It would’ve made more sense as an under slot value if they needed more money for Martin, but that wasn’t the case as he signed for 850K. They must really like this guy and it’s an interesting decision. Other names available after #77: 78 - 2B Kaden Polcovich (Mike’s guy) 79 - RHP Nick Garcia (high riser) 80 - RHP Cole Wilcox (1st rd talent) 81 - LHP Sam Weatherly (One of the better lefties on the board) 82 - OF David Calabrese (Highest HS Canadian aside from Owen Caissie) 87 - SS Casey Martin (1st rd talent) 88 - OF Jordan Nwogu (Highest college Canadian, player vs Vanerbilt in 2019 CWS) 89 - 3B Blaze Jordan (monster HS power bat) 102 - 3B Gage Workman (Great glove in college) 117 - LHP Luke Little (Juco guy recent clocked at 105mph)
metafour Verified Member Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 Yes, they obviously really like Palmer and he wasn't a "money saving" pick. Analysis on that pick after the fact has suggested that analytics are big on him, which is probably what drove the selection. Hard to really compare that selection with those other guys you named without seeing what they all ultimately sign for. For instance, Cole Wilcox is going to get a hell of a lot more than $850K (think first round money) so he wasn't really an option regardless. I'd imagine that Blaze Jordan gets over $1 million easily as well.

Farm Verified Member Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 The UDFA results are a bit disappointing (at least up to now) as well. I wonder what the reason for that is as well. Location?

AintNoThang Verified Member Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Martin will NOT sign with the Jays. Boras has recently stated that the Tigers will be a "monster" team. So he's going to wait and sign for well over $8mil with the monster Tigers after they pick him next year. You heard it here first.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 I thought there’d be a flood of signings right after the draft... $20k is nothing. Anyone half way decent is better off going back to school, or if possible go the Carter Stewart route and sign with a team in Japan/Korea/etc where they might actually make a livable wage for a few years. I think the 20k signings will mostly be underwhelming.

I think the 20k signings will mostly be underwhelming. The only undrafted player of note so far is Kale Emshoff to the Royals. That isn't to say that the others won't be good players, but he certainly could have been drafted in the 4th or 5th round.
Key22 Verified Member Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 I wonder if Frasso is throwing a wrench in the plans? Seems to be taking awhile.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Extremely hard to imagine any player from this draft turning down a reasonable offer, particularly college players. There is a non-zero chance that Covid will mess up the draft in 2021 too, either from a second wave or the economic fallout of this 2020 wave. Nick Frasso isn't going to turn down half a million dollars and Austin Martin isn't going to turn down whatever it is that Toronto can offer him.

And you're probably right. But would you really be completely shocked to see pure ego enter into this and drive the decision making process? I've conditioned myself to expect stupidity to factor in almost everywhere.

I would be shocked, yes. These players have smart representatives who are capable of seeing the unique downside risks in not signing in this context.
Bturn2210 Verified Member Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 pretty sure Austin Martin is the last first rounder to sign now that Meyer is officially signed. Patrick Bailey was signed today too.

In a normal situation you might be right, but this is not a normal situation. We have no idea what Covid will do to baseball in college, the minors, or the Majors over the next 12 months. Martin may wait until the very end to sign, but he's signing. Boras has no real leverage, but he also has no reason to sign right away, so it's a waiting game.

But in the back of my mind I'll always be prepared for something to go sideways. I guess it's just the Toronto fan in me. Hope for the best, but be prepared for possible disappointment.

devo Verified Member Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Hypothetically, lets say Martin doesn't sign and re-enters the draft next year. Then he is drafted again in 2021 and once again doesn't sign. What would his status then be? Would he be a free agent and able to sign with the team of his choosing?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 College players get an extra year of draft eligibility due to cancelled season. He would in theory be draft eligible for two more years. But he just turned 21 entering this year, you really don’t want to wait until 23 to get drafted and lose all leverage. There’s also no reason for him to do this, the Blue Jays are one of the best landing spots for him if he cares about winning and $. We also have nobody blocking him at the MLB level. Don’t worry, Martin will sign. Now that Boras Corp crossed off Torkelson on his checklist, Martin and Mitchell are next.
metafour Verified Member Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Max Meyer signing for $6.7 million assures that Martin would be the 2nd highest paid player in the draft - so he's still getting paid like the "#2 pick". There is virtually zero upside in him turning down a ~$7 million offer.
