devo Verified Member Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 College players get an extra year of draft eligibility due to cancelled season. He would in theory be draft eligible for two more years. But he just turned 21 entering this year, you really don’t want to wait until 23 to get drafted and lose all leverage. There’s also no reason for him to do this, the Blue Jays are one of the best landing spots for him if he cares about winning and $. We also have nobody blocking him at the MLB level. Don’t worry, Martin will sign. Now that Boras Corp crossed off Torkelson on his checklist, Martin and Mitchell are next. Oh I'm not concerned about the possibility him not signing. I was just curious what the process would be if a top prospect stayed in school until he was a senior and then did not sign coming out of the draft. Would that player then be a free agent and able to sign with the team of their choosing?
Key22 Verified Member Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Max Meyer signing for $6.7 million assures that Martin would be the 2nd highest paid player in the draft - so he's still getting paid like the "#2 pick". There is virtually zero upside in him turning down a ~$7 million offer. What if Frasso doesn't sign? Do the Jays lose #4 pick slot money? If that is so what would be the max money left for Martin? From what I read Frasso had an arm problem but was supposedly a round 1 lock. So maybe he tries his luck next year for 5 times the pay day. Also Remember - Blue Jays - Boras - Paxton.

It would go up or down based on what Frasso potentially signs for.

Also remember we signed Ryu, the animosity with Boras is in the past. His loyalty is to money. Next year’s draft is very saturated, a guy with injury history shouldn’t play around. There’s a ton of college guys that are going back to school. I also find it hard to believe this front office would draft Frasso if they didn’t have a good sense of his $ number.

I could certainly be wrong about this, but I think he would they become an undrafted free agent and would be free to sign with whomever he likes. However, I suspect there are rules around what an undrafted free agent can sign for, which would eliminate the opportunity for him to get into a bidding war and land a multi-million dollar deal.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 That Mason McRae guy's info never correct. Who is he? Did he start his own site or something?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 If those numbers are correct, then that would mean the Jay's would go over the 5% allotment. Unless they signed Frasso to a below slot deal.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 That Mason McRae guy's info never correct. Who is he? Did he start his own site or something? He's a blogger who is into the amateur side and seems to do some hobby scouting, at least. He's not an insider by any means but I think he wants to be a scout or something and knows some scouts or industry adjacent people. Not a huge fan to be honest. He'll commonly say some arrogant stuff and then just delete it if it looks bad in hindsight. He slammed the Trent Palmer pick as "the worst in the draft" a while ago and basically said Toronto in giving a future reliever in Palmer so much money had backed themselves into a corner RE: signing Martin and Frasso. Looking now and the tweet is gone. I think I said "well this will be a dumb s*** opinion when they sign everybody"

I was looking for some of his draft night tweets and they are gone. We'll see how accurate his info is here, it's not like the info can be widely different from $6.9MM to $7.2MM.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 Now is he worthy of being on the 60-man player pool? Special circumstances but it would be kind of cool to see his pro debut in the MLB. Like Olerud.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 I hope they save Martin a spot on the 60-man. yes, he's been correct on a few signings actually Welcome to the board!
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 That Mason McRae guy's info never correct. Who is he? Did he start his own site or something? In before Austin Martin signs for under or @ 6.8 M. That’s my guess based on what we’re seeing with Torkelson, Lacy, Meyer, Kjerstad, Hancock and Gonzales. Either way, they got it done.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 Just got off the phone with Todd. His sources are telling him it's somewhere between 6 to 8 million. BBBB confirmed too so it appears it's legit info.

They'd play chicken until the last moment to get it done.

sdyment Verified Member Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 Not sure if this was posted, but the first I’ve seen it. From Shi Davidi’s column... Colleague Hazel Mae reported that first-round pick Austin Martin and the Blue Jays are in agreement on a deal, pending a physical. It’s believed that fourth-round pick Nick Frasso is in the same boat, and that both deals could be announced this week.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 That's great news. I was a little worried that Martin would have 2nd overall expectations that would be hard for the Jays to meet with 5th overall slot money.
