Martin's Vanderbilt numbers are ridiculous. What is the MiLB equivalent of SEC? High A?

Somewhere between rookie ball and high school

I am excited so now I can talk s*** about the other players:

- Zach Veen the next Bellinger? Pst. Dude strikes out too much. More like the next Michael Saunders!

- Max Meyer is gonna be such a reliver. I can't wait till he's saving 10 games a season for the Marlins.

- Gonzales has weak exit velo bro! The next Warmoth!

(obvy I don't wish ill on any of these players and this is a joke).

She's a high school girl. Don't be creepy

He already graduated, so if equal age or older, she is a college girl...

I was making locker room jokes with the guys.. Relax!

And a pretty clean slate money wise. Next several years are going to be like the mid 1980's to early 1990's again.

So I never looked into Martin much because I didn't think we had a shot at him. Can you guys help fill in the gaps?

Did he play in the Cape Cod league? How'd he do with wood bats?

What are his current and projected tools (Hit, Power, Speed, Defense, etc.)? I think I've heard he's a potential 20/20 top of the order hitter.

Trackman stats - I saw 54% of the balls he put in play had an exit velocity > 95%, but does anyone else have any other #'s on him?

"His bat is next level and definitely the best LH bat in the class.

Let's not act like this guy isn't special."

"Elias and team deserve waaay more benefit of the doubt than saying he's "saving money" at this stage. We have some of the game's best evaluators and analytics. Let's just see! Interesting."

"As the only Orioles and Razorbacks fan on the planet I am thrilled with this pick. I've watched numerous games with Kjerstad since he came our way from Amarillo, Texas. Beautiful fluid swing, not a lot of holes, plays in an elite conference. Built perfectly for OPACY. Decent fielder. Also works with an outstanding staff in Fayetteville. Woooo Pig!"

"Definitely was here for Martin but this is where I sit now.

This guy has a fantastic bat from the left side. This also allows for a lot of options llthe rest of the draft."

hahahahahahaha

I don't visit this forum much anymore so i'm out of the loop. What happened to GD and king? They would post all the time in these draft threads.

It is 100% true, 75 % of the SEC pitchers will never sniff minor league ball. If you want better comps look at stats vs Friday starters (but then you are dealing with SSS) I mean if SEC stats translated to A ball Kjerstead will be the best prospect in baseball soon.

Who is running the draft for the Red Sox?

Nick Yorke @17. Ranked 96 by BA. OK.....

Speculation is they took him to punt the pick so they would get the first round pick back next. Hes not an underslot sign because his commitment to college was strong. Plus the Red Sox don’t have a second round pick. Honestly not a bad strategy.

Plus to above-average tools across the board, most advanced college hitter in the draft, above-average power, threat to steal bases, plus defender at multiple positions, high IQ. Extremely patient at the plate with plus barrel control, plus plate discipline. Very competitive player, driven. In game he's got that same charisma you see in Bo Bichette, he just looks like a star player. It's about as can't miss as you can get in a college hitter.

He bat leadoff for Vanderbilt in their college world series championship run, can also be a #2 hitter.

Arm strength can still be improved, the frame has upside and not fully filled out.

I don't even have a proper comp for him. When he was at 3B last year I comp'd him to a young Nolan Arenado.

It's not a perfect comp, but his talent is off the charts.

As a centerfielder, I'll have to think about it.

So they took him knowing he wouldn't sign so they could get the pick back next year?

This draft is really strong and deep - why the F would they do that?

His commitment to going to college was strong back when he was ranked in the 100's which would put him in the ~3rd/4th round - he could very easily change that decision AND take underslot at #17. This is astronomically higher than where anyone thought he'd go, it will change his plans entirely.

I don't buy that the Red Sox are punting this pick on purpose. With no #2 pick, they could rank this kid much higher than industry consensus and see an opportunity to save money here which will let them spend big elsewhere down the line to make up the loss of the #2 pick.

I don’t know man you would have to ask them

that. They talked about it a bit on the draft show. Red Sox front office is a bit in shambles. They faced punishment this year for the scandal went on which includes loss of their second round pick this year. Perhaps they just want to get things organized and regroup for next year. With virtually no high school season and most college seasons being so short not a ton of information out there. Perhaps with all things considered they didn’t feel comfortable making the pick. Deep draft or not they still have the #18 next year if they don’t sign him. And will have a larger bonus pool as a result.

I am sure they aren’t the only team that has considered this as well. But as you said this is a really strong and deep draft so teams are taking their picks and feeling good about them despite the lack of information.

That could definitely be the case. I guess will find out. I was wondering if teams would try this though.

There where whispers that a team would punt their first rounder today but the only org name I heard tied to that rumour was the Angels and they picked the guy everyone had mocked to them.
