Yes. Indiana Pacers have a female Assistant GM, I think that was previously the closest anyone got.

Yup she is. There's been others in high level roles but never as GM.

 

Jeannie Buss is the President of the Lakers, but got that through her father, Jerry Buss after he died. She did beat out the rest of her siblings for the role though and is apparently a pretty hands on President.

I am happy for her, I just always thought she would end GM on a west coast team. Miami doesn't seem like a fit for her at first glance. I thought they would bring in a Latino since that and the makeup of players is important for that team and the fan base..

Meh, Manager hiring can have a PR spin but GM it is mostly about baseball. She is known as one of the most shrewd negotiators (contract and arbitration) in baseball which sounds like a perfect fit for Miami.

In 2019 Miami forced all their execs to take Spanish classes, including Jeter, since it is an essential form of communication in the Miami market. On a player bases, they target Cuban and Latino players to help with their fan base.

 

I am not one for identity hiring and think the best person should get the job regardless. They must believe she is clearly the best person for the job, which is great. She will just have to make time for the mandatory Spanish lessons and be prepared to communicate in that medium with both the community and players.

Maybe she does know a little bit, maybe she is fluent for all I know. I just assumed they would be hiring a Latino GM due to the market and their unique needs. I would have said the same thing if they hired Shapiro. Atkins speaks Spanish but I don't believe Shapiro does.

Yes, I am aware of that. This is a new policy they put in place in 2018 or 2019. Per Jeter- "Well, especially here in Miami, if you don't speak Spanish, you don't fit in. I think it's important.'' Hence mandatory Spanish lessons for every exec/manager etc.. It was just an observation that since they think Spanish is so important. It actually speaks very highly of her that they hired her (assuming she is not fluent in Spanish) when that is an important component for that market and Jeter.

Lorenzo is the only hispanic member of the executive team. Considering everyone was hired in the past 2 years they don't see it as an issue.

The Marlins roster on the big league level and minor leagues are very heavily Latino/Hispanic. I don't think it matters from a PR/optics standpoint that Ng is Asian instead of Latino. As long as she is good at her job, and builds a winner, that's all fans will really care about. I think Jeter is more concerned about building a loyal fan base in a predominately Latino area, and that's where identifiable players will be important. Ng and front office people in general will always be in the background.

There is a difference between taking Spanish lessons and communicating with the community. I ASSumed that would be a requisite for them. Obviously not, ok, cool.

 

The same questions are asked every time the Montreal Canadians tried to hire someone who does not speak French, or doesn't speak it well. Sacre Bleu!!

 

I personally don't give a s***. Like others have said, at the end of the day if the person is best qualified, I am not into checking identity boxes and the goal is to WIN. Whoever can do that the best, all else doesn't matter. It was just a comment/observation that they didn't go that route (Latino) when I thought they might and some of Jeter's comments had made me think it was a requisite.

Perry Minasian has been hired as the Angels' new general manager, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

 

Minasian quickly emerged as the favorite this week as the Angels began narrowing down their long list of initial candidates with a final round of interviews. He spent the last three seasons serving as an assistant to Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos, and before that he worked for nine years in the Blue Jays' front office and scouting department.
