Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Very few players aged 30+ have won MVPs since 2000. This year they're both 30+ And 1B-man.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Ryan Tepera apparently got a MVP vote. Well deserved. the f***?
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 the f***? These guys need to be pulled in an alley and fixed. Seriously.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Yes. They'll figure out a retirement calling card. Beating a dead horse here but... The Angels have paid Albert Pujols 210 MILLION DOLLARS to put up a grand total of 6.4 WAR over 9 seasons. He hasn't posted a positive WAR since 2016 and he's getting paid another 30M next year Cardinals were sooooo smart to let him walk and I think every team has learned from this

They've come this far without cutting him, I'm guessing they just ride it out at this point and part amicably.

I’m not sure if an exact clone of Pujols came along, that it’d go much differently
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 I mean in Mike Trout was a FA after next year, what’s he pull? Pujols was that level

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Did they though? I’m not sure if an exact clone of Pujols came along, that it’d go much differently Teams are obviously still willing to give out long term deals to guys aged 27/28 or so, but once they reach 30+ it just doesn't seem to even be considered anymore. Sranton/Machado/Harper will have some bad years paid at high $, but not likely nearly as many as Pujols did.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 *Looks over in Miguel Cabrera's direction* Yeah that should’ve been first thing to pop to mind I guess
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Plus they took Vernon Wells from us and paid his salary...! Just to pour salt in their wound.. Also 125M for Josh Hamilton Yeah rhe track record hasn't been great
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 I mean in Mike Trout was a FA after next year, what’s he pull? Pujols was that level It's an interesting question. Pujols was entering his age-32 season, but was coming off the worst offensive season of his career, and IIRC had visibly lost some of his athleticism. If Trout's next three years went 8.4, 6.8, and 3.9 fWAR without major injury, I don't think he gets a 10-year deal before his age-32 season. But 7-8 wouldn't be surprising.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 But yeah, I guess 40 is where you draw the line
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Don’t forget too, sometimes there’s other factors at play besides projected WAR. Wasn’t the owner angling for a huge tv deal around that time?

If Pujols aged like Ortiz, Beltre or Cruz then they would have looked foolish to let the legend go. He would have been finished his career with 110+ WAR and may have made a run at the all time home run record.

(They offered him 200M IIRC and he turned it down) A bit of luck maybe in addition to shrewd. On a side note, they got more WAR from their Michael Wacha comp pick for letting Pujols go than Pujols has put up since. Edited November 13, 2020 by G-Snarls
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Keep in mind it wasn't just the Pujols signing that set the Angels back financially. Even if like BTS accurately points out there were some big red flags with Pujols entering free agency, he was still a first ballot HoF and one of the more recognizable names in the sport so some team was gonna pay him. They also took on the Vernon Wells contract in the midst of a dead cat bounce, and they gave huge contracts to Josh Hamilton and CJ Wilson, all of which either were albatrosses immediately or became so very quickly. Neither of those three players finished out their contracts playing for an MLB team. The Angels consistently have shot themselves in the foot past the Pujols signing.
