He has 4849 PA for his career. The results for 114 PA for this year so far should be given little weight.

His career wRC+ is 118, I would use that as his "true talent level". With the big contract maybe it drops to 110 or so from Manny playing below his talent level.

So you're arguing over a 4 point difference in wRC+. Keep em honest, Jim.

No, its more than that. And it's not an argument.

Focus your posts on the matter on hand, not the poster.

On this play, why don't we see it more to get the faster runner out at second and potential DP (not necessarily the DP though).

What do you think?

Edit: Just learned below... which means it has to be a really weak infield fly ball in order to avoid touching it with the glove

"If Vargas had put a glove on the ball and then dropped it, the batter would have been called out. There's a rule against intentionally dropping a fly ball (even in a non-infield fly situation), but there's no rule against intentionally missing a fly ball entirely."

What's with Machado in SD? Is he really just a slightly above average hitter now? Is 2017 and 2019 more in line with his true talent?

His statcast numbers are awful this year - well below 2017 and 2019

His xWOBA is .364 compared to his actual wOBA of .302. He's getting extremely unlucky, which can happen when the sample size is small and there's more room for variance. His true talent is likely somewhere in between his 2018 and 2019 seasons - good power, decent but not significant amount of walks, good but not great strikeout rate.

And as usual you're piling on Jim for no reason other than to be an *******. He is making a valid claim, Machado is very likely not just a barely above average hitter, the underlying stats behind his performance and his career numbers to date indicate as much.

I'm just curious. Statcast numbers are WAY down so far this year and if I'm the Padres, I'm pretty f***ing pissed if I committed 10 years and $300M to a sub 110 wRC+ hitter (like he was in 2017 and 2019).

You have to think they were expecting to get the elite 131 to 140 wRC+ hitter he was in 2015, 2016 and 2018, especially during his age 27 to 30 seasons (followed by some decline).

Yes, and by the comments from Padres fans on stream chats they are pissed off, too.

For what it's worth, his average EV last season 91.2 mph, right around his career average, and still ranked well relative to the rest of the league. It's down this year, which could be concerning but it's also hard to say if EV takes longer to stabilize or Machado is simply going through a bit of a slump in a short season which accentuates it. I will agree that his Statcast numbers haven't been nearly as good as his early career or 2018 seasons, but he was still crushing the ball in 2017, his xWOBA that season was almost 50 points higher than his actual. I don't think Machado at 28 has declined to the point where he's no longer the hitter he used to be, although it's possible his batted ball profile makes it so that defenses can position him much better than other players and we all know he has a serious problem with hustling which can't help him at all.

Castellanos launched that ball into the "Judgement Free Zone" while he was apologizing on air lol.

Honestly, the fact that he called Nick's homer mid-apology is f***ing hilarious. It was some s*** straight out of Brockmire.

It's gotta be right up there with these two beauties as far as the most awkward home run calls of all time go:

It sounds like the Rockies dude is having a stroke.

fair enough. I won't lie - I hate Machado and hope he fails.

Not really necessary to report the uncensored word, just as I wouldn't expect or appreciate a white reporter saying 'n*gger' just because she was quoting someone verbatim. You can say 'a slur' and we all know exactly which one, not to mention the video was widely available. I like Passan and don't care that much, but it wasn't necessary or professional. You dumbass faggot.

It's not necessary, maybe, but if he does, who gives a s***? He's not the one calling someone a fag. To imply that he's just as guilty as the guy who used the word in an offensive way is disingenuous and an attempt to further control over language. Plus, isn't Passan a member of the LGBTQ+ community? I believe that one of the letters in that alphabet soup is an A that stands for "allies".

If he's only signing 1 year deals, age is mostly irrelevant. He's signed for $17.5 this year, and I can't see teams giving any player $30M AAV (and make no mistake, that's how teams will view this, as AAV) for 2021 at all. I just don't see how Trevor Bauer gets the 7th highest contract for a pitcher ever. He's been a very good, bordering great, pitcher in his career, but outside of 2018, he's been basically sub Marcus Stroman career wise (and Stroman is younger).

That's not a dude to whom a competent front office gives $30M+.

On a 1 year deal he gets 30 easily. My 42M seems a bit silly in hindsight but if Gerrit Cole signed a 1 year deal last offseason he would probably have approached $45M.

Posted
21 million would be equally shocking on the low side. Cole Hamels just got 18 million at age 36. Bauer should certainly approach or exceed 30 million, even with teams spending less.

Yeah, I'm thinking 1 year 30M at the minimum. I'd be shocked if he got less, I also hope the Jays are in on him.

Assuming Bauer continues to pitch well, 1/30 is something the Jays absolutely can absorb in next year's payroll and should be offering it.

No doubt, they have the flexibility to get it done even in a bidding war, plus a guy like Springer and re-sign Giles.

It's not. But forcing an apology for not bringing on an LGBTQ guest to discuss the topic is f***ing ridiculous.

"forced"? They weren't forced, they recognized the mistake and apologized for it. What's the big deal?
