Looks like Nolan Arenado wants out of Colorado.

Rockies are such a terrible organization.

Dealing for Arenado next offseason would probably be better value than signing Betts, but that 2021 opt out is just too scary.

We could require him to opt in as a condition of the trade, could we not?

Not really different from requiring an extension to be signed as a condition of a trade which happens frequently enough

You'd likely have to rework the contract which I don't think he'd be amenable to.

Should have just signed Rendon this year, and saved a prospect or two. Granted he'll be worth even less next year, older + closer to that opt out, I think COL might just hold onto him because I don't think any team will offer them what they are asking.

For the privilege of only one season of Mookie Betts the Red Sox are asking for two top prospects on top of the acquiring team taking on nearly all of David Price's remaining salary. Hopefully this leads to the Red Sox getting nothing more than a comp pick after 2020, on top of having the keep paying Price for the next several years afterwards as well.

Ya, Chaim Bloom thinks they can get a deal similar to what the Mariners got for Edwin Diaz. Of course, Diaz had multiple years left and Betts only has one, and the Mariners ate part of Cano's contract and the Red Sox expect a team to take on most of Price's contract.

I don't know where they get off thinking they're going to swing a deal like that, but I hope it backfires in their face, too.

1 year for Ozuna??? What the hell??

I would’ve done 3 years easy

My guess is Ozuna didn't get any long term offers that he liked and wanted to take a 1 year deal to hit the market again.

Doesn't look too great for Castellanos either at this point.

The QO screwed Ozuna as it did Odorizzi. In the next CBA, the MLBPA might want to fight to get rid of it completely.

I think at the very least if the qualifying offer system is going to stay in place, the deadline for accepting it should be extended to a more reasonable time frame. Like say something such as the player needing to decide by the winter meetings instead of only getting in the neighborhood of a week to decide. I bet Jake Odorizzi could have found himself a nice multi-year offer with the way this years market ended up developing if he actually had some time to play the market before having to decide on whether to take the qualifying offer.

Another possible improvement would be a tier system of compensation for both the team losing the free agent and the team signing one. I don't see why the punishment for signing a qualified free agent reliever should be the same as signing somebody like Bryce Harper or Gerrit Cole. Maybe both the compensation and penalties could be based on total contract value handed out. And the way the compensation system is set up so that compensation picks being based on the size of the market should be completely eliminated. Why should a team lose a higher draft pick for signing a free agent because they are in a larger market? That never made any sense to me.

Ozuna to the Braves. 1 year, $18M

Braves give up a comp pick for just 1 year of Ozuna? I wonder if they wanted him for say 3 years $45M and he decided he'd rather a 1 year deal to hit the mark next year with compensation attached to him.

Likely the case.

Safe to assume most here wouldn't really want to give up a compensation pick to get 1 year of Ozuna? Makes a bit more sense for the Braves who are contending. What's that contract really cost the Braves with the pick included? 1 year $23M?

They already lost their second-round pick when they signed Will Smith, so for signing Ozuna Atlanta forfeited its third-round pick.

Ah - good point. That makes only getting Ozuna for 1 year more reasonable.

I wonder if we'd see the QO system revert to where the team losing the player gains a pick but the team signing isn't penalized.

I wouldn't have wanted to give up the pick for one year, but I would have been onboard for four.

Something just randomly made me look up Troy Glaus on Fangraphs and I never realized how good he was in 2000 (8.2 WAR) or how potent the Angels offense was in 2000....when they had Erstad (8.7), Glaus (8.2), Salmon (4.5), Garret Anderson (2.2), Bengie Molina (2.2) and Mo Vaughn (1.9 WAR - but with 36 hr and 117 rbis).

Team finished 82-80, 3rd place in the AL West behind one of the most horrid pitching staffs I've ever seen.

Fun fact - Bengie Molina actually posted a positive BsR in 2000!

How could that possibly be?

I guess being fast, fat and young is a possible combination.

and now the Reds are considering trading Senzel. Could be an interesting answer to 3B for the Jays.

Where did you read that? Why would they move him?

They have Suarez at 3B and a plethora of OF options. It makes sense that they would at least explore moving Senzel to address other needs.

Because he isn't going to get much PT in Cinci, and he has more value than Winker
