He'd have to be in the top 2% to earn $50M in his first 6...but zero reason to dick around with his service time now and no need to deal in arbitration. I think Chicago comes out a little behind in the first 6 on this one...but it's pretty small in the end. It will all depend on his value in those two options

And he, and his agent, are happy campers. I think contracts like this are great ideas, if the timing is right.

German gefistet to the tune of 81 games total, 18 already served.

At least he can pitch in the Post-season, after sitting last year's out. :P

The Mets want to trade Lowrie and Dominic Smith in a package deal. There's an obvious fit on our roster for both a good bat and a backup shortstop. Smith can split time at 1B/DH while Shaw gets time at other positions and sits vs lefties.

It looks like the only position Jed Lowrie can play with any level of decency is second base, he likely wouldn't be a very good backup shortstop since he's only played 3 innings there since 2015. I wonder if the Jays front office is interested in taking on dead money for prospects at this point in the rebuild? Smith looks like a nice long term building block for first base.

Sources from Cuba confirm that Oscar Luis Colas, the Cuban Ohtani, left the island in last hours and will pursue an MLB contract. Colas debuted in 2019 on the NPB with HR on their first turn at bat.

The Lowrie + Dom Smith thing is such a no-brainer that if it was that simple Toronto or some other team would have already pulled the trigger on it. The Mets must be asking for a non-trivial prospect to make it happen, or something like that.

Lowrie isn't even necessarily dead money. He was worth 8.6 WAR in 2017+2018. It's not like he had a catastrophic injury in 2019 either, IIRC it was a knee sprain then a hamstring strain then a calf strain. It's very much within the realm of possibility for him to put up a couple WARs in 2020. He could just be a part-time 2B/DH.

Lowrie has had an interesting career to say the least, he's alternated from stud to dud and back to stud seemingly at random. Then you throw in the completely variable health status from season to season and who knows what player you are going to end up with. Only one year left on his current deal though, so even if he busts completely then no big overall impact on team finances.

Don't the Jays still have an appreciable amount of international money avail for this period? Couple of million?

Does not look 18, would have figured he was well into his 20s from that photo.

Edit - He's 21, I'm dumb.

The MLBTR article suggests he may wait until J2 to sign, when there is more money available.

I can't seem to find anywhere that tracks remaining IFA pool money.

I attempted to do this, but it's next to impossible because figures are not made public more often than not.

Yeah that makes sense, likely would be a near impossible undertaking. Dozens of signings per team and not all figures are available.

Would be nice to even have estimates in order to see who hypothetically may still be able to make an offer with this year's money.

IIRC didn't we spend most of our remaining pool on the Dutch kid?

The Dutch kids, Sem Robberse and Jiorgeny Casimiri, were from 2018's allotment. They were signed in June 2019.

I'm more interested in Seiya Suzuki. He's putting up gaudy numbers in Japan. Should be posted after this season.

He's got a lot of pop for a guy his size, as listed.

They got money from trades.... something like $1.25 million total or something.

I guess if they have even roughly $1.5M it's enough to make a legit overture.

Remember Ohtani's signing bonus was only like $2.3M...
