Let's cut the crap and get hardcore: who are some potential realistic starting pitcher options for the Jays this offseason? Either via trade or free agency. I think this team is 1 year and 1-2 stud starting pitchers away from being a real force. I'd love to sign Gerrit Cole and would pay him like a high end escort, but he's probably not a realistic option. So let's hear it...don't beat around the bush and act like a panzy...who are some realistic options?

In trades? Kluber and Archer might be available if the Indians and Pirates want to dump salary (and in Pitts case they will have a new front office that are more likely to tank than try to win now). I would think you wouldn't need to give up a top prospect to acquire either of those guys if they were available. Although, Archer signed one of those "I'll bend over and let Tampa F me for my entire prime" contracts so he's still cheap enough for the Pirates to hold on to even if they rebuild.

In free agency, the middle group of free agent Sp's are probably all realistic. Gibson, Pineda, Roark, Miley, Porcello, etc, etc.

I'd roll the dice on alex wood if his discount is deep enough.

Kluber and Archer would be a wet dream. What do you think it'd cost to land either of those guys? Pirates would want a s*** ton of bricks for Archer, considering how much they gave to acquire him.

That's not how it works + the GM who gave those pieces up is gone + Meadows/Glasnow are both in about the 95th percentile of potential outcomes. TB lucked out beyond their wildest dreams.

Archer would be a nice target at the right price.

So then what do you think it would cost to get Archer wearing a Blue Jays jock strap in 2020?

I could see Kirk or Moreno moved in a trade or one of orelvis Martinez/ hiraldo

Is it the right time to make that type of deal though. All of these guys should be more valuable a year from now, after another year of development and being closer to the majors. Orelvis for example should reach full season A ball in 2020, or even start there and elevate to A+ by the end of the season.

Also, a philosophy of sustained winning means you don't trade your high end prospects and in fact even when the team is a contender, you are still trying to acquire elite prospect types.

I agree. I just meant If they are gonna look to make a trade for a big piece, you have to give to get.

Could move a teoscar type OF this offseason as well of course for a bullpen arm or something

I would sign some buy-low SPs on 1-2 year deals and give the kids we have in the system another year to develop. We're still building.

That said, I like Alex Wood and Odorizzi if the price is right.

That is a great point that I never thought of. Ensure to sell high on your prospects to maximize their value. Awesome insight!

Nice to add:

Cole

Strasburg

Realistic:

Roark

Wacha

Don't want Wacha or Roark. I feel like both may just be micro improvements over our internal options, especially Wacha.

If we're going to spend on SPs, then I want to spend on a noticable improvement, like Cole or Stras (both unlikely), or Odorizzi, Wheeler (more likely).

Have you looked at the SP depth chart?

Thornton - gave up a lot of runs!

Borucki - didn't pitch

Shoemaker - barely pitched

Waguespack - sucks

Kay - rookie, barely pitched

Tanner Roark was a 2 win pitcher and he would be at the top of Toronto's depth chart.

Wacha sucked but he is two years removed from being good and at 28 he's a good project.

Toronto should be trying to get like three arms, including Tanner Roark, an equivalent pitcher, and ideally someone even better like Wheels Ontario.

What about internal development? Thornton showed enough that and is young enough, that it would be reasonable to expect some improvement. Kay looks like he could be good. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those guys give us cheap 1-2 wins. Is it worth paying Roark for that?

Would rather spend a bit more for 3-4 WAR pitchers. Don't mind being locked into guys like that.

Do you think it would only cost a bit more?

Maybe an additional 10M AAV? Can't see it being ridiculous in this market.
