Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 No offense, but the fact that some you can't sniff out rival teams' BS is pretty puzzling. Use some common sense. These teams are facing their own heat for NOT making moves. The Twins needed starting pitching and were after starting pitching, and they came away with nothing. It is incredibly easy for them to, after the fact, state that "we really wanted Stroman and had an even better offer that we were willing to make! We can't believe they wouldn't let us beat the offer they ended up taking!" Its a horseshit attempt at spinning the narrative so that it looks like they wanted to get a deal done, but we somehow blew it by taking less. That way they absolve responsibility for not adding like they were expected to add, as if it was "out of their hands" LOL. Out of all the people complaining you direct that at me lol. I have been fairly patient with Atkins compared to most people. I still think if reports get out like this it means something went down that’s not nothing. It is completely possible that Atkins fell in love with the idea of the Mets trade that he didn’t check back in with other teams. Its very possible other teams knew of the Mets offer and felt by their own evaluations that the trade wouldn’t get done. The industry as a whole was shocked. Its not nothing.

Logan Allen is s***. Nobody should be concerned with silencing the casual fan base. Most of these people aren’t buying tickets or merchandise. They hate their lives and look for reasons to be mad about things. It actually physically disgusts me. That the majority of twitter see’s Alex Anthoplous as some kind of god. They seem to completely forget he’s a large reason why we are in this position to begin with. The Shatkins era turned potentially a decade or more of irrelevance into maybe 3-4 years of bad Baseball tops. Who knows what this team looks like right now if AA stays. Are we paying David Price 30M right now? Are we locked into Edwin and Bautista. Do we have anything in the farm system?
Farm Verified Member Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 Can someone share the BA articles behind paywall please?
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 Couldn't be more irrelevant. Not that I would mind if Atkins kick's rocks. Getting ripped apart on the good show as well. Surprised to see the Fan590 turning on the regime.

DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 Man baseball central took fan calls Atkins is done here Lol at the hyperbole and overreaction.

If the Twins weren't given the chance to beat the Mets offer then shame on Atkins and f*** him. 2. The Twins should've been serious sooner if they wanted him that bad. Quit f***ing around and come in with your best offer sooner. This is what you get when you dick around with someone like Atkins.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted August 2, 2019 Posted August 2, 2019 lol f*** off Minnesota. Someone on here mentioned a couple days ago it was possible Atkins asked for every team's best offer by Sunday before their road trip. Based on this article that actually seems likely, and if so the Twins have no one to blame but themselves
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2019 Posted August 2, 2019 lol f*** off Minnesota. Someone on here mentioned a couple days ago it was possible Atkins asked for every team's best offer by Sunday before their road trip. Based on this article that actually seems likely, and if so the Twins have no one to blame but themselves Atkins also said he went back to every team that had made an offer and gave them a chance to counter the Mets' offer. So either Atkins or the Twins dude is lying here, and I'm leaning Twins dude. He probably just assumed that Atkins would wait until the last minute to pull off a trade and was wrong. Either that or he wasn't willing to make an offer that Atkins liked more, regardless of how he valued his offer.
Jc5415 Verified Member Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Hi all I was in Toronto a couple of months ago, and took in a game and have been following the Blue Jays since - having never seen baseball before. Being from London and as a football/ soccer fan, I have been picking things up as I am going along but just have a (probably dumb) question. In football the player has all of the power re. movement, and will only move if it suits them. I saw that Stroman kicked off about moving to the Mets, am I right in thinking that he has no choice but to go if he is traded? Thanks

A player under contract or under team control has little to no say in where/if they get traded. Sometimes free agents negotiate no-trade clauses or lists into their deals but this is becoming more rare.

Technically, soccer in Europe is very similar to the way it works here, if a player is under contract he doesn’t have any freedom. But NBA kinda became like soccer in Europe where a player can force a trade by saying he’s unhappy and doesn’t want to play for his team anymore. Team knows if it will become public his trade value will go down so it makes sense to trade him while he still has value which is why we’ve seen quick trades like Paul George or Kristaps Porzingis happen before it was widely known that something was going on. In baseball it’s less common but does happen sometimes.

You are seeing a lot more of players refusing to play if they dont get transferred.

You are seeing a lot more of players refusing to play if they dont get transferred. It could also back fire on the players, if they act up too much, other teams may view them as toxic and they may end up unemployed. A good but extreme example is Colin Kaepernick in the NFL. When he was the best in the world, he could do no harm but when he started to slip a little bit on the field and his off the field hectics became louder, he found himself having to resort to law suits because he believed everyone out there to get him.
Jc5415 Verified Member Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Yes definitely. Gareth Bale is the interesting case and why I asked the question. Madrid want shot of him but he is happy on the golf course picking up €350k euros a week unless he gets a move he wants so he stays and they have to pay him. In baseball they would pretty much be able to move him on much easier as far as I can see. Anyway, sorry have taken this off topic.

Baseball has a "restricted list" that someone refusing to play would be put on. I am not 100% sure, but I believe they are not paid if they are on the restricted list. From wikipedia: Restricted list - Players who fail to report within 10 days of the season, or who fail to come to a contract with the team prior to that time. Players on this list do not count towards the Reserved List or Active List limits. A player may remain on this list for two consecutive years before he is removed. Often, placing a player on the Restricted List is akin to releasing him without fully relinquishing his rights.
Jc5415 Verified Member Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 That's how it should be, more balanced between team and player.

(Twins learn lesson, next time they will be all like "Yes sir Mr. Atkins, we'll get the offer in right away, by 11:00 even, anything else you need Mr. Atkins??")

Welcome, always nice to know there’s a fellow Brit interesting in baseball! Just one thing to add: in baseball once you sign a contract it’s guaranteed (sometimes with options / bonuses). So a “transfer” is where the contract is traded to another team. The player has no say (apart from a few that have a no trade clause in their contract normally specifying a few teams no one wants to play for, like the Orioles). In football, a transfer fee is paid by the purchasing team, and the player signs a completely new contract with that team. So they have to agree to the deal, and forgo any money owed on their old contract.
