gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Seems beyond stupid to keep Alford up here and not play him especially with Carrera's daily stupidity lol Hopefully Alford starts tomorrow vs LHP Miley.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 meh.... i am sure Alford is excited just to be here.... just hanging around with MLB ballplayers is a good experience for him
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Hopefully Alford starts tomorrow vs LHP Miley. Yeah I would hope so
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 At this point, Aaron Sanchez should probably just retire.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Alford over DSJ for 4th OF spot? Or Zeke the 4th OF. His magic has worn off.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 How much to buy 2-3 more years of Marco Estrada??
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 How much to buy 2-3 more years of Marco Estrada?? If the Jays are out of it they are 100% trading him and attempt to resign him in the off-season. The Jays don't have a choice because they can't qualify him.

I'd be happy if we are in playoff contention at the deadline - but if we aren't, the expiring contracts of Estrada and Smith in a package deal could bring something enticing back for us. Someone like the Nationals and Austin Voth could be a good trade partner. Voth is projected to be a back of the rotation guy, but could start straight away for a non contending team, and is likely expendable for the Nats to improve their World Series chances for 2017.

Voth as a secondary piece maybe, we'd be able to land a higher ceiling prospect than that.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Estrada and Smith in a package deal would get someone better than Voth With all being well we could get something good (I'd be happy with a young pitcher who can enter the rotation for 2018), but I do think Estrada's back could effect his value - he'd be traded near the end of a long season.

He's had zero problems with the back this year.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 He's had zero problems with the back this year. "zero" is incorrect. Estrada: Feels lingering effects of back injury He says it's better than last year but it stills aches - he'll do well to get through 25+ games with no effect. Hopefully it won't be a major issue, but we've heard that a few times already this season!

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Jesus Christ this is from February lol. So you don't think that a 33 year old pitcher with a history of back issues, who says his back aches, and would be acquired in all likelhood to start for a playoff team on short rest / 4 man rotation, is an injury risk? Come on, be sensible.

Come on, be sensible. Estrada has a 2.18 ERA in the playoffs for the Jays over the past 2 years. I think you would be surprised what an aggressive team in the playoff hunt might pay for a guy with ice in his veins who's performed well in the playoffs each of the past 2 years.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 so what happened to Tulo? Did he get hurt in his minor league rehab games? When is he coming back?

Yeah, I see the Nationals as the team with potentially the biggest want for him (he'd sit nicely behind Scherzer and Strasburg), with the Astros and Orioles potentially also interested. Maybe if another contending team suffers injuries then there'd be more interested parties to drive the cost up. I personally would be happy with a trade built around one of the Nationals' starter prospects who can go straight in the rotation to prepare them for next year when they'd hopefully remain in the rotation.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Trade Estrada and then try to re-sign him in the winter (if the Jays are out of it). Seems pretty cut and dry. The QO isn't going to scare teams off anymore, and what's the compensation now for losing a qualified FA? A 3rd rounder? No point keeping him if the season looks lost by July.

Under the new rules Estrada can't be offered a QO anyway (now you are only allowed one QO in your career whether you accept it or not). The interesting dilemma will be what if we are around .500, and just a few games out of a second wildcard place?

We can't qualify Estrada either way. Once you have been qualified you're never eligible again. Blue Jays qualified him after 2015. Edited May 22, 2017 by Jonn

He's not eligible for a q.o. The new CBA says you can't be offered one if you already had one in the past and Estrada was Q.O.'d the last time the Jays signed him.

No point in delaying the inevitable (and the value lost) on a hope and a prayer.

What I don't know what the FO will do is if we are only a few games over .500 (in isolation, ignoring the poor start, that's not a great record, but it would take a very good run of form to get there) but still in serious contention for the 2nd wildcard.

There will be a lot of considerations - team health, schedule, run differential - peripheral stats, how many teams to pass, relative strength of Jays vs. other wild card contenders, what trade offers are on the table. I fully expect Shatkins to have a number of trade offers at the time of making the decision. What they could get in return for Estrada, Tulo, JD, Pillar, ? probably the prime consideration.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Also, I'm sure like most of the board the FO is encouraged by the fantastic play of Vlad, Bichette, Alford, Jansen and a few others. The pitching prospects have fallen flat however. Getting a nice horde of pitching prospects back would be good move, IMO.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 You focus a trade around the highest ceiling prospect you can acquire. From the Nats I would say the highest ceiling piece they have is the bat of Juan Soto.
