Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 There have been a lot of rumours about a s***** restrictive/conservative clubhouse culture in St. Louis. Maybe he thinks it's a bad fit? I have no idea what the issue with Boston would be. Dude would put up silly numbers there. Could it be the perceived racism in Boston and perhaps Adam Jones claiming he was called the n-word?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Could it be the perceived racism in Boston and perhaps Adam Jones claiming he was called the n-word? Hasn't Jones complained about being called things in every park he's played in (including his own)?
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Maybe he doesn't like the colour red.

I don't think he was able to verify his claim. Mookie Betts backed him up though, to the detriment of his team. Perhaps Stanton believes it as well.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Sources: #Mariners interested in free agent 1B Carlos Santana, although there have not yet been substantial talks between the parties. @MLB @MLBNetwork Some things never change.

Seems like he's Veto'd the Giants as well. And the Dodgers are now in talks

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Not surprised he vetoed Boston. The racist stigma is pretty strong about that city, in more sports than just baseball.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I pity the team that gives him THAT
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I pity the team that gives him THAT THAT's off the map, man, what's dumn-dumn thinking?
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 $30M per for 7 years, to a guy who's already bad defensively. What could go wrong?

Hipfan Verified Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I bet he'll end up with a 6 year deal somewhere between 150-175M...he has Boras as his agent, right? I'm sure someone will come up with serious cash to make it happen, like Arizona with Greinke.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Yes he did, but No. I wouldn't be so sure of that mate. If enough teams are interested the inevitable overpay could get into that range.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 The recent Jon Heyman article that gave predicted contracts for the top 80 free agents gave a range for Martinez of $150m - $162m over six years.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Yankees talking Stanton with Marlins too Rumoured to be about 12 teams in discussion with Marlins
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I remain convinced that the Yankees will get their grubby hands on either Stanton or Harper That's some 3/4 punch from the corner OF spots
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I remain convinced that the Yankees will get their grubby hands on either Stanton or Harper That's some 3/4 punch from the corner OF spots The Yankees want to get under the luxury tax (and stay there), plus they value prospects just as much as the Jays do. No way they touch Stanton's contract, nevermind give up prospects on top of that. I definitely see them making a splash in free agency '18 though. I could see a Machado-Didi-Torres infield for them, left to right.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I guess technically, the Marlins could argue they should receive the equivalent of the draft picks surrendered when signing a FA who's been qualified....but that's probably it. Tough situation for them.

They really don't technically need him, they have a solid OF. There are a lot of FA hitters this year also.
