Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Cliff Lee retired sort of quietly didn't he?? His shoulder became hamburger meat.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 His shoulder became hamburger meat. Phillies had one starter's arm turn to hamburger meat, and another that probably couldn't digest any.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Are the Padres the worst-run team in baseball now? Holding Brad Hand makes no sense. His value should have been higher now than it will ever be, and he's currently pitching at peak level. IMO not selling the most volatile category of asset in the game is pretty indefensible. They seem to get everything wrong.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Does Willie Calhoun play in an extreme hitters park? How does a guy striking out only 11% of the time, with an ISO of .289, SLG% of .574 only post a wRC+ of 131?

They also have so many hideous uniforms.

Yep, I can't imagine a scenario where they weren't offered at least a pretty good return for him, but instead they probably refused to budge on their initial ask to reflect the market. I hope this comes back to bite them in the ass.

And before that, like Trevor Hoffman and Brian Giles? Their franchise player is a vanilla league average 1B signed long term for 85M.

It is truly amazing that anyone buys tickets to their games. Perhaps this is God's way of evening out the fact they live in probably the best city, with the best weather in the US. Bastards can't have it all.

They seem to get everything wrong. There is no reason for them to suck either. Great city, nice park, they seemingly have a leg up on signing starting pitchers, etc. Just a terrible franchise though. Somewhat related, I foolishly read a Buster Olney article where he graded the trade deadline for every team. He gave the Jays a D+ which I thought was odd. I checked his grade for the Padres and he gave them a C-.

Great food, great craft beer selection and awesome setting to watch a game. Unfortunately the Padres aren't a good team.

I would rather pay to see a ball game in San Diego than at the Rogers Centre. Padres suck, though that ballpark is amazing. Hopefully they can field together a good team in the next couple of years. San Diego is a great city indeed and one of my favourites in the US. I'd rather visit San Diego again over cities like Miami, LA, and San Fran.

I wouldn't move him either if a team wasn't willing to give me the prospects I want.

I'd like to know what they were offered but the Jays managed to turn a s***** starting pitcher in to a guy who should be able to start in RF next season. You'd have to imagine that the Astros would have done the same deal minus Aoki for Hand. They do have him for two more years but I'll be surprised if the market for him actually increases.

I can't imagine the Padres would take Hernandez for Hand, then they really would be the worst run organization in baseball. We had to pay significant money on the Liriano deal to even get Herandez.

Yeah I didn't mean a straight swap just highlighting that if deals like the Liriano one were to be had then surely they could have gotten something for an even better pitcher.

Yeah. Another lesser reliever returned Candelario. All signs point to SD likely having pretty good offers on a guy whose value only stands to decline.

Mind you, Avila went as part of the package, but I can't imagine he had a ton of value despite his career year.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Oh, and LOL @ the Orioles for thinking they were buyers At least our FO knows the difference Still can't believe Rogers wanted to hire Dan Duquette. We got lucky with Shapiro.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Still can't believe Rogers wanted to hire Dan Duquette. We got lucky with Shapiro. I'm pretty sure It's more ownership then it is Duquette. Ownership for the Orioles is a joke.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Oh, and LOL @ the Orioles for thinking they were buyers At least our FO knows the difference The O's did well. They control Beckham next year for if and when they decline the J.J. Hardy option. Of course, they could have had Machado playing shortstop this whole time but that's a different story.

We're in serious trouble if Hernandez is our starting RF to begin the year. At the very least, we need a strong side platoon player.

Duquette has done very well with the hand that he was dealt in my opinion. They have a meddling owner who won't let him sign international players and probably wouldn't let him sell at the deadline either.
