glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 If Valbuena can play the outfield at even an average level, then he's a solid pick up since he can cover 3B in case Donaldson has to miss time. Good way to make up for lack of depth is getting players who can cover multiple spots. He doesn't have much sample in the OF, though.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 There are also plenty of 37 year old bargains in history... 1-2 year deals are fine with guys like this

crmr Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 1-2 year deals are fine with guys like this It's starting to look like you can get Jose for 2, maybe 3. Do you sacrifice 2 years of potential contention for the third, a likely low salary year anyway? I would. You could always give him a solid deal in 2017 and attach a player option in 2017 to let him bet on himself, which seems to be the new trend in contracts.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Or no Valbuena at all and we actually field an Outfield with 3 Outfielders.

Shatkins already wisely stated they would not offer player options or opt outs.
crmr Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Shatkins already wisely stated they would not offer player options or opt outs. How is that wise? They should be using anything at their disposal. Sometimes you have to be creative to get things done. That actually makes me think they have no clue what they're doing. The Mets got a great deal for Cespedes last year, and, had they not decided to resign him, would have gotten huge surplus value. Had they not given him that deal, would he have signed? You have to think of it in terms of age curves, where you expect his age curve to be a year delayed (or whatever), such that he will opt out but give you a solid year.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Or no Valbuena at all and we actually field an Outfield with 3 Outfielders. Pearce is an adequate defender in the OF, which could put Valbuena at 1B (with Smoak rightfully riding the pine).
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Pearce is an adequate defender in the OF, which could put Valbuena at 1B (with Smoak rightfully riding the pine). I would prefer Pearce play first and be used in the OF in a pinch. Imagine how fun it would be to have a good defensive Outfield. Plus I hate the word adequate. Make the Outfield Great Again.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Or no Valbuena at all and we actually field an Outfield with 3 Outfielders. Valbuena in a platoon at 1st with Pearce with Pearce platooning with Upton in LF (Pearce plays vs. RHP) would probably be very effective and provide a significant amount of versatility to the team. Ideally you'd pair that with a RF who's above average defensively. Christ that would have paired well with Fowler playing RF. Puig & Dyson would both be good fits in that scenario now.

I have always saw him as an average to a slightly above average outfielder (not a great arm but LF works). Now considering we had Bau and Saunders last year which i would not say are average outfielders i would still say that it would improve them with Pearce being out there.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Why wouldn't it be? You're saying they should sign Valbuena over Bautista, so their value (not the aggregated value for all teams) of the draft pick is an important determinant over deciding which is a better option. I'm not sure how this isn't getting through... This board is so rude to new posters. Look at all the people being driven away.

But I would prefer we exhausted the Outfield market before playing guys out of position. Not that I have anything against Pearce in a corner. It's nice to have that versatility but ideally he plays First.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 It's not unreasonable to want to get pure OFs out there. How many guys are left to buy though? Not sure I'm willing to trade for the perfect fit when playing capable guys out of position only costs a bit of money.
george09 Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I think we will trade for a RF, and sign someone to platoon with Upton (Moss? Pagan?) Id love to trade for one of Peralta Calhoun Herrera Yelich (pipe dream) Martinez Hamilton More realistic trades Granderson Bruce What does everyone think of Alex Dickerson or maybe Jankowski?

I feel like the board has vastly improved since I joined. It used to feel like a douchey college frat boy hangout. Now it feels like a corporate boardroom with discussions about contract valuations and opportunity costs and people who actually know more than me for a change.

Can't help but wonder how much Puig would cost. Would absolutely love to land him.

It's because we were douchey college frat boys. We are getting older and maturing.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Can't help but wonder how much Puig would cost. Would absolutely love to land him. Agreed. He'd be a great fit for what we need.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Puig for Osuna and Smoak (who they can cut if they like). Who says no? Probably Toronto

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Great fit and great salary over the next two years (Puig). No clue what the Dodgers would want though.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Probably Toronto I think it would be an interesting trade. Puig has 3 years of control left, and is projected at 3 WAR next year (and the projection looks reasonable to me). The cost (after factoring in Smoak) would be ~4M / year plus the arbitration year. Whether Puig is a clubhouse cancer/distraction or not, I don't know. Add Moss and we'd be looking at about 12M left to add a few relievers and a backup catcher.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 What about Biagini and prospects instead of Osuna?
Driveof85 Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 You mean the Jose Baustisa who posted 1.4 WAR in 517 PA's last year and the Luis Valbuena who posted 2.0 WAR in 342 PA's? All this WAR talk is making me sick. It's a ******** new age stat that means nothing.
