He said there was no negotiation, so there you have it...

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Report: Blue Jays, Bautista's reps in active contract talks Bryan Mcwilliam Dec 29, 2016 5:03 PM The Toronto Blue Jays and Jose Bautista appear to be talking once again. With the new year approaching, Bautista's representatives are engaged in active contract discussions with the Blue Jays, sources told FOX Sports' Jon Morosi. General manager Ross Atkins told MLB Network on Tuesday that the 36-year-old was still an alternative for the Blue Jays, after Bautista said he would be willing to accept a one-year deal to re-sign with them if it exceeded the $17.2-million qualifying offer he rejected in November. "He is a proven force in the lineup. He's obviously still an alternative for us and we're glad that he is," Atkins said. "We'll do everything we can to improve our team and that is one avenue." The six-time All-Star, who has hit 265 home runs with the club since joining them in 2008, had a down year last season amid injury issues, hitting .234/.366/.452 while posting his lowest OPS (.817) since 2009. The Blue Jays have reportedly been on the hunt for an outfielder to add to their roster for most of the offseason, and have been linked to Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson of the New York Mets, Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and free agents Brandon Moss and Michael Saunders. Re-signing Bautista wouldn't cost the team any draft pick compensation, which would be a huge plus. Over the course of his 13-year career in the bigs, he owns a .255/.368/.493 slash line with 308 home runs and 862 RBIs. He earned $14 million last season.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Hopefully they turn him into a 1B and let Pearce handle RF. This. Sign him, deal him at the deadline if we are out of the playoff hunt
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 This. Sign him, deal him at the deadline if we are out of the playoff hunt They won't be out of contention at the deadline, especially if we stay relatively healthy. I'm sure they'd use Bats and Pearce in and out of the OF/1B/DH positions.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Sign Bats and rotate between him and Pearce at 1B/OF Sign Seth Smith to platoon with Upton in LF. Send Smoak to the Abyss
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Hopefully they turn him into a 1B and let Pearce handle RF. 1b is the best thing for Joey Bats career. Do I think Steve Pearce is better then Bats defensively, hardly.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 1b is the best thing for Joey Bats career. Do I think Steve Pearce is better then Bats defensively, hardly. Why would you not think Pearce is a better OF than Bautista?

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I would like Jose back, but no more RF please. At least hide his arm in LF.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Come one Shatkins put it in the hole bro
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Why would you not think Pearce is a better OF than Bautista? Bautista in LF and Pearce at 1B could be a better alignment. Pearce is better at 1B than he is in the OF and Bautista is an unknown at 1B. But you could be right, Bautista should bring his 1B glove to ST and they can tinker with it.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Sign Bautista for LF, trade for Dyson for RF, sign a backup C and then tinker with the bullpen and I think that allows us to compete for the WC.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I have a feeling they'll roll with Jimenez as the backup C. Outside of Ramos has there been any movement in the catching scene? I'm sure there will at least be someone brought in to compete for the job.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I have a feeling they'll roll with Jimenez as the backup C. That's so bad to count on him though...Yes he knows all the pitchers, but he has more value to the team as a 3rd catcher. Russ has gotta be on his last legs with the beat downs he took the last 2 years. The guy is the ultimate warrior but I'd have hard insurance on him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Trading for Dyson is the only way I'd be comfortable with Jose in the OF. He'd still be awful, but at least Pillar and Dyson would be studly in two of the OF spots. If they do bring back Jose, I think it's more likely we'll see Pearce in LF, Bautista in RF, and Smoak at 1B against RHP, and then Pearce at 1B and Upton in LF against LHP.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I have a feeling they'll roll with Jimenez as the backup C. Jimenez is a walking dead zombie
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I'd rather just see Bautista @ 1B, Pompey/Upton in RF, Pearce in LF and trade Smoak for some new Spring Training hats.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Is Pearce in LF and Bautista at 1B better than the other way around? I'm not convinced. Seems like two subpar fielders instead of just one.

Seems like two subpar fielders instead of just one. Pearce is slightly more mobile than Bats, but not by a significant amount. I think JB could pick up 1B fairly quickly, plus he wasn't terrible at fielding ground balls at 3rd when he used to play there. His smaller stature does provide less of a margin for error for the infield throws that might potentially sail over his head. Overall I think he has the potential to grade out as an average first basemen though.
